one of the few songs where gira expresses even a sliver of sincere hope. not besmirching the rest of his discog but i can only take so much old man anguish i got my own already
1989 The Burning World is berry, very Special to little ol' me...I don't care who doesn't appreciate this Great Blessing of A Recording. Thank you, very much.
@qriofficial1769 maybe because this is one of his most unambiguously "saccharine" songs, which isn't what Swans is known for but benefits from greatly as an emotional art piece
Oh my father, he was born beneath the water And my mother She was born to no one's daughter And I, I was born beneath the dying sun Born from the mouth of a river That would not run dry La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie Oh, the river that runs with love It won't run dry La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie Well, I awoke this morning In the blackest night And a million stars were aching In the sullen sky And I heard the great machines As they bled and cried And I saw the end of the world I had no question why La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie Hold on to the one you love And kiss her before she dies Oh, the river that runs with love It won't run dry Oh, my father made the water when he cried But the river that runs with love It won't run dry and the sun will burn a Hole in the purple sky But the river that runs with love It won't run dry

This album is really special. It has a beautiful darkness that not many other records have. Not sure why it’s hated.
Apparently Gira felt "intimidated" while recording the vocals.

Not the best Swans album, but this is definitely one of their best songs. Love the melancholic sound and lyrics.
such a gorgeous song! tagged onto the end of a mixed tape a friend made for me in 1989, have loved it ever since
super the Swans
Oh my father, he was born beneath the water
And my mother
She was born to no one's daughter
And I, I was born beneath the dying sun
Born from the mouth of a river
That would not run dry
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie
Oh, the river that runs with love
It won't run dry
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie
Well, I awoke this morning
In the blackest night
And a million stars were aching
In the sullen sky
And I heard the great machines
As they bled and cried
And I saw the end of the world
I had no question why
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la lie
Hold on to the one you love
And kiss her before she dies
Oh, the river that runs with love
It won't run dry
Oh, my father made the water when he cried
But the river that runs with love
It won't run dry and the sun will burn a
Hole in the purple sky
But the river that runs with love
It won't run dry
