These videos are great!! Another pioneer I recommend covering is Saul Leiter. His book "The Unseen" is phenomenal

Thank you! I am planning to cover Saul for sure. There is a new book of his work that I’ve preordered for the video, so I’ll be making that video once it arrives.

What did they paint the taxicabs with back then? It being the 1950's it's probably a combination of lead, asbestos, freon, and those radioactive laboratory playsets for children. Looks like they have lathered it on at least half an inch thick. The yellow and orange paint and the sheen reminds me of the number 1 and 5 billiards balls. Haas' and Leiter's photography both have those eyecatching taxicabs and it's not only the color that's mesmerizing.

@shootswithcoops Thanks for watching. I've only posted with limited regularity for 18 months, so I'll get there.

Two questions: are you BUYING all these books? What made you pick this as the series you wanted to make? (Asked in a positive way) ;)

      1. Yes
      2. I went on several photowalks where the question “who is your favorite photographer?” would regularly come up and people either didn’t know or had answers that were always some RUclipsr (which is fine and obviously subjective, but there are clearly plenty of prolific photographers pre-internet). I often didn’t have much of an answer either only really being aware of Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, and Meyerwitz aside from a few others. Having been an incredibly pretentious music dork all my life I know what is contrived, played out, and boring with music. So, it became apparent to me that I needed that knowledge with photography if I ever wanted to create anything meaningful or unique. I still don’t have that knowledge or a favorite photographer necessarily, but this journey has opened my eyes to so many different kinds of street photography that it really point out how bland so much work is and how much everyone (including myself) could be doing more to push the envelope and stand out.

@@developingtank I very much appreciate the series and all the hard work that goes into it and thank you for the story behind the story! So fun to hear it. I know that every time I finish watching one of these videos, it provokes a change in how I approach my next trip out

Doing the research does the same thing for me. Currently in the stage of testing how to be more productive with these videos, so I can get more out and provide more inspiration. Stay tuned

Thank you for taking the time to put together your reviews of street photographers.
I usually shoot in B&W. Two street photographers that opened my eyes to color are Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter. In the newest Haas book of photos from the 1950’s-60’s there are achingly gorgeous images. I love his intentional use of blur. Inspirational.
Please do a review of Saul Leiter’s work. He introduced me to using negative space in addition to being an early user of color in street photography. He was originally a painter and it is easy to see that. What I haven’t been able to find are his photos of models in Esquire and Harpers Bizarre.

Thanks for the detailed and generous response. I had avoided doing some of the guys that already have a lot of bios on RUclips at first, but now I’m finding that it’s fun to do the research on them even if many videos already exist. Saul is one of the most creative street photographers by far and I will make one about him as soon as I am able to get one of this books. Cheers!
