I learned a lot from your analysis of Gruyaert's photos. I've been a painter for 50+ years and have just recently renewed my interest in photography. Your comments about limiting choices spoke to me. I decided 10 years ago to severely limit the material choices in my paintings...the same size and format 4.5' X 6.5" same palette Pelikan Opaque Watercolors. This decision came after watching a documentary about an 80-year-old Japanese sushi master, "Jiro Dreams of Sushi". He gained mastery through the repetition of the same sushi dishes. Now people come from all over the world to eat at his little store-front restaurant. Limiting your choices can become a powerful means to achieve mastery.
THIS video took me like 30 hours to edit. If I can give you advice - it would be do NOT update you operation system or editing software in the middle of your edit 😀😅😂😭 I hope you gonna like it!
Happened to me too. Don't upgrade OS during an edit. I lost all my peripherals, Wacom etc when I went from El Cap to Sierra. A ton of lost money. Wacom was extremely cruel, not upgrading drivers.
I upgraded to Catalina and suddenly Final Cut started crashing during longer rendering. It was extremely annoying since I had to render the final version like 5 times. And it take quite some time on my Macbook pro 2012 😀
This is probably my favorite video of yours. Not only was it great to get acquainted with Gruyaert's work and philosophy, but you do a great job of analyzing and educating us on what makes Gruyaert so special. Thanks!
Thank you for showing the photography works of Harry Gruyaert - Boy was I wrong being born in a digital era in which I am 64, and I miss shooting film. I have just recently fallen in love with Gruyaert's work - he is one of the few real masters when it comes to color photography. Nice video, Maritn, greetings from Prague :)
Thank you! I am happy you liked it. Which book do you like most? I would like to get my hands on the “East/West”. But you are right. His work is amzing!
@@aboutphotography I have Harry Gruyaert published by Thames & Hudson. I have East/West as well. I also love Fred Herzog's and Saul Leiter's color work. Currently I am back to working in black and white these days.
That was a great discussion. When I was shooting film I had one body with Provia in it and the other HP5. If I'm going to shoot colour, colour has to be the theme. You have to get Zen, entrapped, in it.
Great video! I had never heard of him before, but totally loved the color photos you showed. And I like that he doesn't do only one thing. Like you I have struggled to find a style; people are interesting to photograph, but I love landscapes, night photography has its own artistry, and then there's the excitement of city life. I've never been able to settle on one and only one style, and now I don't feel like I have to. Also like you, I wanted to be a garbageman when I grew up. Then our garbagemen let me ride on the outside of the garbage truck. OMG, it stank soooooo badly!! That totally cured my desire to be a garbageman!
Haha so in the end good for me it didn’t work out with the garbage truck 😂 Night and astro photography are little too technical for me. Like I have to relearn it every time and I always forget it later. Also with making exposures over night (sometimes like 300-600 frames) the trial and error can be time consuming 😂 I am happy you enjoyed the video. Looking forward to see you around!
I discovered this photographer through this video and he is interesting for his photos and his philosophy. Congrats for your video and music, it was a nice piece of time. Thanks for the work putting g a new film on Harry together. There is not enough out there on this great photographer. Especially presented in English. I like many photographers work, but HG over his career and folio is the best for me. Well done. If it's not about the colour then it should be a black and white photograph. (HG paraphrased.)
One of my favourite photographers. Happy to have discovered your wonderful channel. I actually think the music and images along with your narration work very well together. I also completely understand your dilemma about Colour vs Black & White and the complications sometimes when using digital cameras. I often wonder whether I'd be better off going back to film but then I'd probably miss the convenience of the digital workflow. I have recently been reviewing my images from the past 30 years and when I look at my work when I was using film cameras I feel nostalgic but I can't imagine setting up a darkroom again!
Thank you! I am happy you like it! I am also often thinking about film. But I would let it develop a study or photography shop. But then, isn't it the part of the magic to develop it yourself. It is on my wishlist but it will probably take while before I do that. I think in the end you are probably able to see the scene and realise if that would be better black and white or color. But can you actually master both at once? hmm.. Thank you for watching.
Really nice piece. I have just stumbled across you by recommendation. I ponder whether great photogs like Mr Gruyaert, Saul Leiter etc ever regretted moving from film, where they used those tools to produce/enjoy such magnificent work, to digital. The old adage goes that you can’t recreate some of the film magic with digital. I don’t know?
I'm starting to do a photography course for beginners (just finishing the pilot group) and I'm compiling a list of good sources of information to give the participants. I just wrote that it's hard to recommend any RUclips-channels since they're mainly marketing materials for the commercial pro photographers and their view/sub based personal economy. Then I remembered seeing a video on Fan Ho that I really appreciated. Luckily I found it and I started to look at your other videos. Now I have a channel I can happily recommend. You do beautiful work with these. Your amount of subscribers is for some reason missing a zero or two, but I'm sure with time that will change. Thanks for the hard work! Can anyone recommend some photography channels of similar quality?
Thank you a lot! It means a lot to me. After all those hours spend making them I am happy some actually finds them useful and useful. @@aboutphotography Thanks for the recommendations! Martin Parr's channel seems very interesting. I need to check the interviewees work a bit first, but looks promising. The Art Of Photography I'm familiar with and in fact I checked Ted's video on Fan Ho after I saw your's again. Let's just say I have a clear preference between the two :)
Very interesting content, well made. In German I call myself "Buntfotograf" (hard to translate, maybe "gaudy color photographer", but it doesn't work as well, connotations are different) - whenever I go B&W, I think "Heck, I should colorize this …" (I actually did once, using Photoshop, and it was a lot of work), and only on few occasions I really like a B&W image I've taken. Harry Gruyaert is a master, and now I have a face to put to some of the pictures I've actually seen before but had no idea. As a side-note: HCB, one of the founders of Magnum, had studied painting (and returned to drawing after his photography career), so he had an arts background too - I wonder why HG was controversial …
I always thought BW looks more artistic which is funny since reportage used to be all in BW and color film was not used that much. Now when everything is in color BW seems to be more appealing. But you definitely lose something when you leave colors out.
@@aboutphotography I admire well made B&W photography (Ansel Adams, anyone? ;-)), but I'm primarily drawn to color. The funny thing is: I'm a fan of B&W infrared photography (thinking about it - this is where I actually enjoy shooting B&W), and there I don't miss colors at all! Great stuff. I really wanted to be a taxi driver when I was a kid, owing to seeing Kermit the Frog drive a taxi in Muppets Take Manhattan. It had to be a yellow taxi though. I really enjoyed that. A great breakdown of his images and a little history about the man himself. Your explanation as to the different ways he uses colour in his images was excellent, and the highlight to me. I enjoyed the visually inventive editing and everything flowed very nicely. My only criticism would be that sometimes you went a little too far in playing with the subtitles - mainly when you rotated them. it was a bit jarring and tricky to read, though it looked cool. I'd keep the subtitles simple except for when you really want to draw attention to a key statement and then punch with them. But apart from that your style just seems to be getting better and better, and your earnestness and love for photography always comes across so well. Thank you for the links in the description too! I've got Harry Gruyaert's East / West collection, I think I'll have another look at them this lunchtime. All the best!
Haha I know what you mean even though Kermit wasn’t aired at the place where I live. You are right with the titles. I wanted to experiment a little bit but the sideway-placed titles might be hard to read. I will remember it next time. That book is actually on my wish list! I hope to get it this year so I can review it on my channel but also because it looks fantastic! Thank you for your comment. I am happy you liked the video!
I am also thinking about dedicating a whole video to color principles since I find it not only interesting but also important. However I feel like my current knowledge is not deep enough right now. But I got a few books about this topic to study it more deeply and then I will probably do it.
As always, a strong video showcasing an interesting artist and his images. I look forward to each one. A small suggestion-the volume of your music track overwhelms your voice and makes it hard to focus on what you’re saying. Consider recording the music at a significantly lower level. Good stuff, though.
The only other photographer that I am aware of who is "color concious" in this style of photography, is Alex Webb. Can you recommend some others I should look into which are similar to Webb or Gruyaert?
I was actually just checking my notes and I had the Alex Webb there as well. I am not sure why it didn't make it to the final script. His has th most similar style. Other than that a big coloraturas photographer is Steve Mccurry. I have recently found on the instagram Dimitry Stepanenko @dmitstep. Check him out. I like his work a lot!
Thank you for your comment! I am happy you liked it! I do plan to make a dedicated video about color in the future. Right now I think my knowledge is still limited and I have a lot to learn. But thank you and see you around!
Very good portrait about one of my favourite photographers. It would be even better without the annoying music. Sometimes less is more, as you said at the end of the video.
Great video! You music bed is too loud for your soft voice, though. (and it probably doesn't need to run for the whole video). I looking forward to viewing your other videos.
The pursuit of a personal style makes me anxious. I look at portfolios of fellow photographers and find a pattern, a style, an easily recognizable something that makes me say: "yes, this a classic photo of his/her". But how can I commit to a single style when I like to experiment, try different things and shuffle the deck once in a while? I will probably never find my uniqueness, my personal style, but at least I won't preclude anything from my range of experiences.
One way I like to overcome this is simply by the volume of shot. I just try to shoot a lot and then I find like like 2/3/5 types of shots. I do not limit myself by certain style so I do not skip on shooting something just because I feel like it is nit my style. Even if I try to shoot color, I will photograph a scene which feels better BW. If that makes sense 😊
Good content! One suggestion - please lower the intensity of the background music. It's really difficult to listen to what you are saying on top of the loud music.
Alright, can anyone explain me how did he achieve so riddicolous depth of field working with ASA 64 Kodachrome film? I mean, even his photos on overcast days are sharp from foreground to background.
Very few photographers can make colour work in a photograph, Haas was one of them along with Leiter, possibly Eggleston, and defintley Gruyaert. There is no theory behind it but the way they saw the world. The irony is that now lamented Kodachrome, featured strongly in their photography. And they sold that lemon ' digital ' to us and we bought it.

Thank you for this documentary, great content, marvelous photographer. I must voice my criticism nonetheless of the music, too loud, and choice of plunking piano - VERY annoying. Please consider making the background music truly background, monitor your levels to your voice over. Just about ruined my experience of your otherwise great study of this great man.
Thank you! I am glad you liked it but also thank you for your feedback. The music was ment to be a part of the “mood” of the video. But i will remember this for the future videos! Once again thank you and see you around!
Well a video as a medium consist of audio and video. I felt like the audio part was important to set the right mood of the video that is why my choice was to use it little louder than only a background music. But I understand it doenst have to be everyones cup of tea.
Do NOT pan over pictures!!! Show them in the whole. Or not at all. Such a bad, nasty habit in documentaries. Always zooming in or out, allowing to see the picture the artist really MADE just for one second. Big BS!
@@aboutphotography Hey, love to read that! Someone who is open to critique, very rare nowadays. Same goes for unauthorized the cropping of pictures in magazines, an old problem. I think I read that MAGNUM forbid that in their contracts.

I am also thinking about dedicating a whole video to color principles since I find it not only interesting but also important. However I feel like my current knowledge is not deep enough right now. But I got a few books about this topic to study it more deeply and then I will probably do it.
great video, congrats!
Thank you! I am happy you like it!
Music a little bit softer please
Ok
I agree with others who said the music was too loud. It ruined the video.
Hopefully fixed in new vids
As always, a strong video showcasing an interesting artist and his images. I look forward to each one. A small suggestion-the volume of your music track overwhelms your voice and makes it hard to focus on what you’re saying. Consider recording the music at a significantly lower level. Good stuff, though.
Thank you! I will consider it in the next one.
Great video - subscribed.
Thank you! See you around!
Sometimes less is more, as you said at the end of the video.
yeah I agree. I belive I fixed that in my videos after this one. but thank you for yoyr feedback 😊 looking forward to see you around
Great video! You music bed is too loud for your soft voice, though. (and it probably doesn't need to run for the whole video). I looking forward to viewing your other videos.
Thank you! See you around! More to come soon!
excelent video ! :P
Thank you! Hapoy you liked it!
@@aboutphotography Makes totally sense. The style-explorer's portfolio will always be a melting pot :)
Thumbs up for introducing us to a body of work from a great photographer but please drop or lower the repetitive, distracting background music.
Thank you. I will remember then when I edit the next one!
I actually like it!
@@paulstapfer7192 I like it too.
I love the music! It’s beautiful - don’t change a thing!
Thank you! New vid is coming soon 😊
Good content!
One suggestion - please lower the intensity of the background music. It's really difficult to listen to what you are saying on top of the loud music.
Ok I will
Alright, can anyone explain me how did he achieve so riddicolous depth of field working with ASA 64 Kodachrome film? I mean, even his photos on overcast days are sharp from foreground to background.
By Photoshop ;))))
Love love your channel. One suggestion. Make sure your BG music I just a little more beneath your voice. Sometimes it's battles the listener. . Enjoy
Thank you! I hope I have improved it in my latest vids! See you around! More to come soon!
I turned off the sound. For me, the music is distracting in this video. The images are outstanding. Tx
Great channel but please dont use any background music or at lease turn down by 60%? in headphones it overpowers your soft voice.
Again loved the video, no need for the music, found it hard to hear your words,
Turn the music down

Yes, yes, no 😊
Music is very annoying.
Ok :)
Why this annoying and disturbing music? Good photos speak for themselves!
Big BS!
Yeah I agree. One of my earliest vids with this concept and I am not coming back to this in the future! Thank you for the tip
@@aboutphotography Hey, love to read that! Someone who is open to critique, very rare nowadays. Same goes for unauthorized the cropping of pictures in magazines, an old problem. I think I read that MAGNUM forbid that in their contracts.
the background is too loud especially if you're talking.
My style is having no style 😂
😊
Why the music? The piano re re repeat is so annoying it ruins your report. Really it is horrible....
Dreadful "music" why ?
Ruined by the overpowering music! ;)
That stupid background noise spoils your video!!
Which one? 😀
