How Flying Paramotors Changed My Life!

  • This is an inspirational story about the relationship I built with a flying machine that grew stronger over time.
Hopefully, this way, I can find others, perhaps you, who can create the same outcome without over promising what flying Paramotor’s is capable of. It’s not a miracle drug, though that was what I expected. It’s not at all like having wings-you’ll find that out for yourself the first time you botch a landing or get your glider lines all twisted. Simply put, this is the video that I would have hoped to have watch when I wanted to fly.
    MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:
    I flew off a mountain without training: • I flew off a mountain ...
Parajet Maverick Unboxing: • Parajet Maverick Unbox...
Crash Landing: • Engine died: Crashed m...
    My Instagram: / anthonykvella
I’d assume that many of you watching this are aware of how expensive it can be to get into flying Paramotors, and the best that I can do is to recommend that you listen to your heart. As the saying goes, “When there’s a will, there is a way.” In this case, when you decide that flying could be worth the effort required to save upwards of $15,000 dollars, you can commit to saving. For me, I sold what I could afford to let go of and increased the amount of time that I spent filming real estate in El Paso. Please don’t give up. You can send me a message on my Instagram if you need some encouragement.
I was so excited when I actually signed up for Paramotor instruction. Even though my training wouldn’t begin for another 2 months, I was pumped! The instructor Ron recommended that I order a book called The PPG Bible. When it arrived I read it cover to cover. The book detailed everything your could want to know about flying Paramotors including take off techniques, traffic patterns, weather, even how to landed in a boxing ring. Everything!
Little did I know, paramotoring was already beginning to change my life and I hadn’t even flown yet. I’m going to make an analogy, and I hope you forgive me for being so cheesy, but life felt like a cold dark house, then all of a sudden, the fireplace was lit. The more that I read on how to fly, the brighter and warmer that fire became. By the time I got training, my shanty of a soul had evolved into a comfortable place to be with a ton of potential.
Training was challenging at times. Myself and the other students spent the first day familiarizing ourselves with glider. Spoiler Alert: Everyday since then has been a mission to become more and more familiar with the damn thing. Over the next 3-4 days, we’d all reach a point where we could manage the paraglider well enough on the ground to prove to the instructor that we could go for our first flights.
Everyone experiences a fear of heights to some degree. The worst case scenario isn’t the person who’s aware of their fear of heights; rather the person who doesn’t know they have a fear of heights. When my feet left the ground for the first time, I was scared. I felt vulnerable. There is no fucking way I would have compared it to being like a bird; Rather a human hanging from some strings high above the ground.
Thank you to all of the Patrons who've helped me share the adventure! / anthonyvella

Well said brother! Fortunately for me I have not had to experience being a soldier somewhere terrible (thank you for your service) but I have fought the battle in my own city and have seen things that can't be unseen. Flying takes it all away. When I leave the ground, all the crap of life stays on the ground and the freedom of flying 'with' the birds takes over. Blue skies and fly safe!

Hello Anthony, wanted to tell you what amazing videos you make. Sharing your story requires a lot of strength and really sorry about your baby. Wanted to tell you, that you've inspired me to buy a paramotor and soar to the skies, to finally find a place where i could feel free of everything. Btw, I'm from Honduras, a small country in Central America. "The purpose of our lives, is to be happy". Stay Safe, Stay Strong!!!

I'm right there with you man. Although my personal situation wasn't like yours paramotoring has truly changed my life. If I'm not doing it, I'm thinking about it. August 2017 I found paramotoring, much like many others did, through Tucker flying to McDonalds. I instantly became obsessed. I saved, practised ground handling, watched videos, learnt, read forums & engaged as much as I could with the community. Fast forward to July 2019. I drove 250 miles to my first flying festival with the paramotor I had rebuilt just to show it with the other classic gliders there, I couldn't even fly yet. It was awesome, I loved it until I was speaking to an individual about my story. This moment will always stick in my mind. Given how much of an investment personally I had made into the sport I exclaimed that "I love flying" the whole lot, not just the flying but everything. This person's response was 'How can you love flying when you haven't even flown yet' It felt like a real stab to the gut, a crushing of a two year long dream that I had worked so hard at. They wouldn't have it the more I explained. 1 month later I took my first flight and it was everything and more than what I had hoped for. The saving, the hard work, the reading, the learning had all come together and in that moment, everything felt complete. I was flying, I had started my flying career. Strangely that one individual nearly shattered the dream of flying, I'm not sure why it had such a profound impact, they were a nobody to me. It goes to show that this sport is for the individual to make of what they want of it. Flying paramotors has also changed my life and I wouldn't change it for anything.

Nice chat Anthony. During my Military years, I trained and flew Hang Gliders on the weekends. I loved the feeling of being out in the open air, not surrounded by a cockpit. Then got married with children, and put my flying career on hold. Now 35 years later, I want to train for PPG. I miss the "high" 👍😁👍

Not every video needs to be emotional and full of feeling, but... by far your best video yet. In my opinion, you've connected with your audience at a level that had not yet been achieved, and conveyed what doing something extraordinary (flying) can do for someones emotional well being. I'm so glad flying has brought you from a darker place. Well done sir. Well done.

The day that I become really good at flying is still a long way off even after 112 flights over almost 3 years so far! I'm starting to feel the change is happening though. I still have some fears and I look around and see most other pilots have a greater skill set than I do.
To fly a Paramotor is quite easy but to fly one well is a different story. It needs practice practice and more practice.
But I am gaining confidence and knowledge and endeavour to fly whenever I can too.
On my last attempted take off I had few lines go into the prop. Waiting for replacement lines now!!As you say Anthony, it is a challenge and if it wasn't I think I would have stopped flying a long time ago.

Mr Vella, it is amazing to hear the passion you have for Paramotoring or even flight. I loved listening to this video and enjoy the others you have created. I think I started around the same time as you, maybe a little before and at that stage I was barely holding my life together due to some things which were totally outside my control, I found that paramotoring was the exact distraction that I needed and training was something to focus on at the beginning and I even got my paragliding ticket while I was at it. Life began to return to a sort of normal around a year ago and generally things have been getting better ever since. Keep up the great videos, each one makes me smile!

Thank you for sharing that. It's great hearing others who've benefited from flying in a similar way. The passion for flight redirected my attention from the misfortune. It has been an awesome tool for processing the past. I am really happy to hear that you are enjoying the videos! Thank you for commenting.

Hey Anthony! Thanks for sharing what Paramotoring has been for you, gets me right in the feels a bit. =)
For me it isn't finding a way froward and out of a dark place, and although I may never fully comprehend what that darkplace was for you, I can undersatnd that it isnt a place that anyone wants to be. I am glad that you found what was needed that let leave there and be able to share the good times with us all.
For me paramotoring is almost the opposite.
For me it isnt a way back into the past, to a time and feeling that I miss dearly, a time that I shared with my Dad and when we would go flying. I know it isnt the same as when he was still alive, and I've missed him every day since, but it is more than enough for me to be able to remeber the past and build a new future of memories with others that I have meet, hope to meet, and those that I will meet just because we all choose to strap on this outlandish device and clip on a peice of flimsy fabric and whole heartedly enjoy what that brings to us.

One of these days I hope to tell my story, too. And it's a good love-of-flying-and-things-that-fly story that goes back a very long time. Being scared before your first flight is natural, I think. But once you step off the ground and go aloft you realize there never was anything to fear but your ignorance -- and then you know the pure joy of seeing the world from a whole new perspective.

Thanks for serving in the Army Anthony. I am very thankful for people like you. I earned my private pilot license when I was 57. I too was struggling somewhat. I had a new young guy at work that was showing me up and I felt like somewhat of a loser. I felt like no-one respected or valued me. And the young guy was being a real jerk and stabbing me in the back whenever possible. For whatever reason, I decided to get my license. And boy, my road was rocky. I did things that I don't think my CFI had ever seen...like turning off fuel during flight. But as my confidence grew in the sport, my overall confidence began to build. After I received my license, I noticed a big change in how I was treated at work. My wife and family also took pride in my accomplishment. In the middle of my training my son lost his first child, and my other son was in Afghanistan with the Air Force. It was a tough time and my CFI (who had lost his wife) said flying could be very therapeutic. I found that to be true. Then a few months ago, I saw a Tucker Gott video and my life is on a new path. I vaguely knew about this sport, but never really considered it. I start PPG class next month. Hope to see you one day.

Thank you for such a great video! I started my training last year with Parajet at their factory. Unfortunately the weather wasn't good enough to complete our first flights at that time so I booked another week with the Paralab on one of their courses in Spain in October. It took a few days more training before I could take my first flight but the experience was incredible! I ended up doing about seven flights in the last few days, all were either in the morning when the sun was rising or in the evening when the sun was setting to be sure the conditions were perfect for beginners like me. The training, the other students, the instructors, the friendship and most of all the flying of that week changed my life. One flight I did was around 2000 feet and to a novice like me it was so amazing when I landed I just wanted everyone I knew to experience what I just had! I was all set to get my equipment early this year and start flying myself at home. Unfortunately the corononavirus situation has made work really demanding and put things on hold a little. My next plan is to hopefully get my own equipment later in the year and book another week with the same team who I did my initial training with to get me back up to speed and back in the air, I can't wait 🥰 Thanks again!

I fly for a living... but I wanted to fly a Paramotor for the freedom it looked like it provided. My assumptions were accurate. I still don't have equipment yet but that's because I'm in Germany where there are more rules than citizens... so flying here is a bit of a complicated task (learned to fly in Italy). Looking forward to the day when I return to the US to start flying a Paramotor regularly!
Thanks for sharing, Anthony. Always look forward to your videos!

I loved this brother!! 💞 you're a good man!! I've been obsessed with this for over 6months now haha, we got hit pretty hard by a severe drought last year & then lost everything in the bushfires, after that we got an anonymous amount of rain & honestly didn't know if our river system would recover from all the bushfire runoff, luckily the platypus & most of the wildlife is starting to recover now, I've had to wait for the covid19 restrictions here in Australia to lift before I could even think about my Training & Training here is around $3600 to $4100, which I think everyone knows is a massive commitment on top of the cost of buying your first paramotor, wing & helmet with a camera & some kind of communication system, having said that though, i obviously need some therapy lol, the cost is so high here too because in Australia you attain your PG2 for paragliding in the PPG course, at first I was so annoyed at this!! as time has gone on though I've learnt how much the two are intertwined between one another & I'm actually really grateful that this is the case now. In the mean time I've been reading the ppg bible 👍 & understanding the sky by Danis pagen, another really great book that I couldn't recommend enough guy's!! I decided to go with a PG2 course separately on its own first (i finely start training on the 11th of july) because it has givin me the opportunity to find a paragliding community that even once I've finished training & I start to transition into PPG training, I'll always have my paragliding community to help inspire me to be a better pilot. I wish everyone the best of luck on this incredible Journey that we have the privilege to share!!! Blue skies & soft grass lol 🤙

So last night I shared my "Adventure" YT video with some co-workers who had no idea I was training to fly paramotors... the texts I received this morning were great, but pretty varied, to say the least. THIS video is the next one I'm sharing with them. Love your honesty and perspective. Makes me very excited for the future. Going to Moonshiners this weekend, just to hang with some parapeeps (my wing will be delivered to my house while I'm gone!) and can't wait to get home and start kiting & flying that puppy! Anthony, I'm so glad I found your channel. All I've known for the last two months is Tucker Gott. I don't even remember how I ended up on his channel. I fly RC planes, so when you talk of that learning curve I totally understand that. When I first started to fly, I never thought I would be able to fly like everyone else, now after 7 years, I'm better than some of the people who helped me learn. One person has already reached out to me, and to help me learn more after my training this summer. Just like my RC friends, the Paramotor community is ready to help you learn the ropes. Flying RC planes helped me get through some rough moments I had no control over, so that too I understand. Someday I'll be posting Paramotoring on my RUclips page. I definitely want to go for a tandem ride before I sign on the dotted line. Thanks for this video.

I actually quit my job to learn and it changed my life, Now im fascinated with clouds, wind, jet streams.

Hey Anthony, somehow I missed this video until right now. Awesome job! I got in to flying to fight some personal demons as well (nothing to the extent of yours) but it is definitely a life-changing, healing activity. Hope to cross paths with you and Mitch one day and tear up the desert!

Philosophy is something I try to apply to everything I try to learn. I’m starting my PPG journey this year. I already have a PPL A and glider licence but I think I will enjoy this mode of flying the best. You said some very important things in this video which I can relate to. Thank you for sharing this very personal emotion with us.

Very inspirational Anthony! Nice to see a different type of PPG video. It struck home because I too lost a child and recently became divorced. I’m getting back into it the spring of 2021.

Hey Anthony! Thanks for this one, I can relate to the part about just taking the steps making a big difference. I just completed training, and it feels like the culmination of a couple of years of interest, burning desire, research, planning, saving, and finally DOING! Anyways, I live in northern California now, but I grew up in Carlsbad, NM, just a little ways from you, and I visit semi-often. Next time I'm in the area I'd love the opportunity to fly with you and friends.

This is super inspirational. First let me say theee are no words for the loss rhat youve endured. I am indebted to you for defending our country. In spite of all rhat your snile is genuine and you carry on. I myself just went through a 5 year nightmare that pushed me to the brink of madness. I almost lost myself along rhe way. I will be 52 in a couple months and I want ro rly more rhan anything right now. I will order that book today, I do not have Instagram but if ita an opportunity to talk qith you then I qm getting it. I hope I get the opportunity to tell you my story and gow I plan to write thwe final chapter(s) of my life . Im just q regular fut living in a small town near Ft. Stewart. Im from a line of pilots but never had the means until now. I regret not joining the military ... for the knowledge not the wars. My grandfather was at the Battle of the Bulge in WW 2 but would never speak about it. My atepson was technically a casualty of that mess in Iraq. The people I loved and who loves me the most are dead and gone ane its an emlriness that will never go away. Anyway aIm rambling but Im Marcus Clark and itw a pleasure to have found this channel. Oh yeah, looks like Gravity is sold out right now, I hope it isn't for long. Really hope I can get some advice !

Bro! You are a good soul. Keep on doin what your doin man.
Your attitude and drive are perfection. You have quickly made your way to my list of you tubers I know I can smash the like button as soon as the video opens because your context is excellent and inspiring.
I have not yet saved the funds required to get into the sport, but I’m working towards it. In the mean time, I’ll be watching your videos and dreaming of the day my feet leave the ground.

Awesome video! Loved hearing ur story and how much u love flying. When I'm able to save up enough, I definitely wanna get training and gear. Honestly, I think I would enjoy everything about it...like taking off and landing. I would probably be 1 of those that could spend some days just taking off and landing. I know it's a lot of work, but it looks so fun!

It sucks working to make the money but at least you live in a time where flight is even purchasable. Yeah it is worth thousands of dollars, but it is still the cheapest it has ever been in human history, and considering it was impossible for most I'd say we are all extremely privileged to be living in a time like now.
