How to land a Paramotor: SWOOP LANDING

  • Experiencing great landings are the BEST part of flying any aircraft, and the swoop landing is the most fun since you get that funny feeling in your stomach; like you would with a rollercoaster! After completing PPG (Powered Paragliding Training), I highly recommend that you practice landing on a target using the method that you were taught your instructor at your flight school.
    GETTING INTO SWOOP LANDINGS:
    Once you've made progress landing your glider using the traditional landing technique, reach out an instructor or someone who is qualified in providing you with safe instructions on how to land a paramotor using this technique. DISCLAIMER: Paramotors CAN be fatal when mistreated. Ensure that you are always flying within your mean and that the weather is suitable for your individual skill level.
    HOW IT WORKS:
    For all intents and purposes, the gliders used in PPG have a constant speed (with exception to the trimmers and speed bar). This means that applying more power to the motor itself will not translate to a faster groundspeed or airspeed. Additionally, reducing power by any measure will not slow you down either. There is an exception to this rule; a pilot can temporarily increase their speed, also know as build energy, when they change the shape of the glider or make a sudden change in power. Once again, this change in speed is only temporary and will eventually pendulum in speed until the wing finally returns to it's set speed. Furthermore, try to imagine the paraglider's native speed in the way that you would imagine living organism's homeostatic capabilities; Whenever there is a deviation (in speed) of any amount, the physics of glider flight will operate to return it to it's designed speed.
    APPLYING THIS CONCEPT WORKS LIKE THIS:
    When approaching your intended landing target, the pilot can apply gentle bilateral brake pressure. This will induce a temporary reduction in speed. The increase drag on the wing will cause it to move aft (behind) the pilot.
    NOTE: Applying too much brake pressure for too long CAN result in a stall and crash.
    Once the wing has slowed, the pilot then released brake pressure (returning both brake toggles to their highest position) in one swift movement. Doing so returns the airfoil to most streamlined profile, allowing the glider to penetrate forward. Because the pilot anchors the wing by lines, the glider will enter a downward pitch at the end of its forward surge. With the wing pitched down, the glider and pilot accelerate in a steep decent. Eventually, the gravity of the pilot will force him to swing under the glider. He will then use the build up of speed (energy) and gain a more effective flare as a result.
    GETTING INTO THE SWING OF THINGS:
    WITH AN INSTRUCTOR: Start High! Much higher than you'd think you need. With a reserve equipped, climb to 1000' AGL (above ground level) and enter strait and level flight. Reduce power until you are at idle. Apply 3-5" of brake pressure, feeling for your wings slowed speed. Within seconds of pulling slight brake pressure, return your hands all the way to the top. Take note of:
    1) The overall effect on you and your glider
    2) Your increase in speed
    3) Your rate of decent
    4) Your loss of altitude
    SUGGESTION: Use a mobile flying app with GPS tracking and recording capabilities (like FlySkyHy) to actually see the data from your maneuver.

    Idk if I'd consider it a swoop unless you pull at least 90-180 degrees and level it out on final gliding the remaining energy out over the ground. Thats more of a porpoise landing. The same effect can be done by pulling brakes until minimum glide and you feel the glider start to sink then just release all the brake at once. The glider surges forward and you dive. If you time it right so the ground comes up as the dive ends, you can flare with all that speed and glide it out far.

    Anthony I like the idea of putting a ring bag in there. I leave my ozone “inner bag” that came with the glider in there all the time. It’s really compact and saved me a couple times when I had to land out. Another thing with swoop landings is practicing swoop footdrags. If you can hook a turn off power and footdrag it for a little then roll onto the power it’s really good to start learning swoopy landings. (I’m in the learning process now)

      Judson Graham great idea man! I’m going to give that a shot. I went out and practiced the “turning into a land” technique, but am no where near as accurate with where I land. At this point, priority number one is not catching the cage on the ground when I drop in. Lol. I’m really having a good time practicing with it though!

    Without the motor, landings require a bit more finesse. Spot landing is a fun, and useful skill. Just a thought: Try starting out higher. Get a good feel of the glide, before you commit to landing. Make a full aircraft landing pattern. Start very high upwind of your landing area. Get a feel of the wind direction while you are high. Set up your down wind path on glide only. (ie. no power) When you pass your target, pay attention to your altitude and ground speed. Still high, turn cross-wind, on your base leg, then set up for final. If you are too high, take up some distance with gentle S-Turns. Stay on glide, and don't add power. Keep your hands up until you are ready for your flair. This will help you maintain flying speed, and keep your wing from stalling close to the ground. You have a motor, which is useful. This practice will help in times when you have a motor-out, or other confined space landing. Of course, consult your instructor before taking on this task, as they have experience that cannot replace my brief explanation. I totally enjoyed this video! Blue Skies & Fly in Peace (>*

    For the under seat wing bag use the ozone inner bag that came with your wing. Its much smaller and will be barely noticeable under the seat but its still plenty big enough to fit the wing in a land out situation. Plus then you can just leave it in there and use the regular wing bag like normal!

    New to the channel but watch a lot of these videos and gotta say for somebody trying to land on a dime you do a hell of a lot better than most and others would call this amazing just come near the tiny target like this much less plant you feet on it ... so kudos for great flying!

    The best way to spotland is by starting way higher and making S-turns with the engine on idl. This way it is easy to spotland. The way you do it here is almost impossible. Also a windsock would help.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 года назад +1

      Perhaps it is better for some. I feel the long approach tactic is to use S-turns. As the pilot gets closer to the target, I imagine the slight surge could improve accuracy since turning late in the game can make you miss your mark. And yes, Windsocks obviously help. I almost never use them them I land in remote locations so often. For those who can reliably have a Windsock at their field, obviously they should reference it. As for me, I fly low and level over the LZ north, east, south, and west to find the slowest speed.

    Dont you have smoke on that or am i thinking Tucker Gott? Does using one of those smoke nuts cause weak spots on the exhaust pipe causing cracks?

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 года назад

      Tucker has had a smoke system on his past paramotors. As for weakening the exhaust, any drilling in the exhaust should, in theory, make the weaker. In the past, the exhausts that come with the same motor Tucker and I have are prone to breaking. I’d be curious to see how it would effect my new MY20 exhaust since it’s reportedly been resistant to cracking.

    Thanks for the video. Wind direction? Did you ever think about a removable pole, even a small pole , with a wind sock on your van, or in the ground when you're out flying? It would make your life much easier. 😉. And it would have saved me wasting 9 mins of my life watching the beginning of the video!

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  3 года назад +1

      Haha! I wish I could refund you those 9 minutes. This was a LONG time ago, and I still rarely fly with a windsock. My thought is that I want to force myself to be great at knowing wind direction without one. I’ve actually gotten pretty good at it (since this video). Lastly, I’m interested in flying to remote locations where ground wind references don’t exist. I think not having a windsock makes me more prepared. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Just my thoughts on the matter.

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman 3 года назад

      @Anthony Vella Fair comment mate. I find it useful at my usual take off location as it's on the coast and thermic and the wind shifts as much as 090 degs every couple of minutes. I've done some paragliding XC flying and it is good to look out for tell tell wind signs, smoke, wind on the water, (flags if you're lucky!) plus using gps ground speed to see which is the quickest and slowest. It was the swoop landing I really wanted to see as in the title as my PPG landings aren't great. Finally a nice one at 09:33 😏 I've done a bit of swooping with paraglider, it's largely a question of timing. Great if you get it right! Fly safe!

    Hey You dont need to carry that big bag. take too much space. carry the small white bag that comes with the wing and the strap. it takes no space.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 года назад

      Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll give that a shot. Which method do you recommend with folding the glider so that it fits in that smaller bag?

    • @emarceau5438
      @emarceau5438 4 года назад +1

      you put all the angle of attack together than attach it with the strap. fold it in the side and make everything fit. you want to protect your ribs. it is not easy to make it fit but it s for emergency use only. a motor out or if weather stop you. i always carry a bag with tools and few parts. like a strap, spark plug, brass ring, wire, tie wrap, cord. etc. so if you have a problem with your engine, you can fix it and continue. i fly tue maverick with a 25 liter tank. plus reserve and all the extra kit like warm clothes and extra warm gloves and some food. so i need all the space available.

    • @AnthonyVella
