My niece gave me scrap fabric from her hemmed prom dress and asked me to make a matching bow tie for her boyfriend. It looks perfect!!! I was very careful to make hand stitches straight & similar in size. I also added a thin strip of interfacing to the neck and cover piece because the fabric was really stretchy. Thank you SO much. I’m so pleased with it.

    Hello Explore2Adore
You need to match the weight of the interfacing with the weight of the fabric that you are using. The interfacing is there to give your fabric body. In some cases if your fabric is thick enough, then no interfacing is needed.
    Good luck and regards.

    Bow Ties... I knew I couldn't just
paint an already made bow tie... I would
have to construct it... Besides I used
to design clothing... how hard could it
be?>>> lol... You make it look so easy, and
I know it is not... again, I love your video....
"Thank YOU" for sharing this tutorial...

Hi, thanks for your response. I have since purchased a lighter weight iron-on fusing. There were only two weights so I guess this was the appropriate weight. I used the same fabric as used in the video (different colour).
I have a polyester tie bought from Debenhams a few years ago, but the neck strap feels less flimsy. What could I use to give the neck strap a little more strength?

The adjuster system that you are talking about is known as a 3 piece bow tie hook and clasp closure system. If you type into google trimmings merchants, you should find a supplier of these things. They are also available in any haberdashery shop.
    Good luck.

    Hello SuperBerryCream
The white pieces of fabric that we are using is known as interfacing which is used to create body to the original fabric pieces used for the bow tie part. Interfacing is a fabric that has glue on one side that bonds to the fabric when heated (when the iron is used). Once bonded the interfacing does not come away.
Interfacing can be purchased from most haberdashery shops. We are using a medium weight interfacing to match the fabric.
    Hope that this helps you.
    Regards.

Hi Nina. I would use a medium weight iron on interfacing. It's bobbly on one side and smooth on the other. The bobbly side is the glue. The interfacing is also known as violene. Hope that helps. Check out our other videos at www.thesewingguru.com

I have just tried making the bow pieces, but I am having a problem. Once I have ironed on the interfacing I cannot get my bow pieces to scrunch up in the middle. Simply, the pieces just fold rather than bend. Am I using the wrong weight of interfacing? The interfacing does seems a bit stiff too.

    Hello Syafa31.
At the 01:03 in the video is a 3-piece hook and clasp system for the neck strap of a bow tie. All bow-tie straps have them in order to fit around the neck.
    Regards.

What brand of interfacing did you use? I have some heat and bond and it tells me I have to soak the interfacing in warm water for 15 minutes. However you didn't do that with this brand that you show in the video.
    Thank you!
