  • Rye, In East Sussex, Is One Of The Most Charming And Picturesque Towns In England. It Is A Town With A Long And Fascinating History, Dating Back To The Roman Era.
Today, Rye is a thriving town with a vibrant community and a rich cultural heritage. In this video, we'll explore the history of Rye and some of its most famous landmarks.
Rye is situated in a strategic location, at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. Rye is about two miles from the sea.
The town was first settled by the Romans, who built a fort here to protect the crossing of the rivers. The town's Roman name was 'Ritanis'. The name 'Rye' is first mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, when it was listed as a small village with a population of just over 100. The town grew steadily in the centuries that followed. By the 13th century, Rye was an important town and a member of the Cinque Ports, a group of five ports that had special privileges and exemptions. The Cinque Ports were responsible for providing the king with ships and men for naval service. Rye's role as a Cinque Port ended in 1540, but the town continued to prosper.
In the 17th century, Rye was a notorious haven for smugglers. The town's location, just a couple of miles from the coast, made it the perfect place to land contraband from France and Holland. The smugglers were opposed by the customs officials, known as 'preventive waterguards', These preventive guards would later form HM Coastguard. These men were responsible for preventing the smuggling of goods into the country.
There was one very famous group of smugglers here in Rye, The Hawkhurst Gang, and they used the ancient public houses, The Mermaid Inn and the Olde Bell Inn as a place of meeting and stashing their contraband, its believed that a secret tunnel connects both of these places. Mermaid Inn dates to 1156
The town of Rye is full of historic landmarks. The most famous is Rye Castle, also known as 'Ypres Tower'. The castle was built in the 12th century and was once used as a prison. Today, it is a Grade I listed building and a scheduled ancient monument. The castle is open to the public and is well worth a visit. Other landmarks include the Church of St Mary the Virgin, the Town Hall and the Ypres Legacy Museum.

Ah that was an absolutely stunning place Stephen and as usual you did a well explained tour. Loved the history of the Romans and the smugglers, and the cobbled streets and buildings were beautiful. The harbour area was so nice too. The church looked stunning and it was great to see the 1420 Mermaid Inn and see the lovely photos that you took on the most Instagrammable street ! This was great and I'm really looking forward to the castle video 🙂👍 ~ Anna

I totally agree with your description of Rye as one of the most beautiful of English towns. We have stopped off on many occasions and I keep promising myself a stay here. I enjoyed the books of E.F. Benson who largely set his stories here and peopled the town with a wonderful cast of quirky characters. A TV series of these was shot in Rye and I cannot walk the streets without filling them with those wonderful actors. Nearby Winchelsea is also a favourite. You had a wonderful day for your visit and captured many glorious images.

    Hi, Stephen and Yhana.
Indeed, this town has enchanting characters and just fits in one of those folk tales to be told.
I was hoping you could stay at "Mermaid Inn," but no longer as an accommodation. Bar & Restaurant
Open to "Non-Residents"!!!🤔So aren't no local PPL allowed to visit? Anyway, how lovely experience even being inside of Inn. 3:26 Yes, I must walk "Mermaid ST." Yhana looks like one of the mermaids.4:36
I feel as if I were strolling the historical town, shops, and castle back in the day through your lens. How exciting! Exploring Rye is beyond my expectation. "Viking Raiders" Skol! You will take it easy, Stephen. Thank you very much.

Thank you buddy, I’m pretty sure you can still stay at The Mermaid Inn, I think it books up very fast and is often used by honeymooners and even a few famous people. I think the signage was more about trying to invite non residents in for a drink. People are too busy marvelling out how beautiful the street is lol 😆
Rye is stunning, it was a wonderful place to visit and share with everyone at home 😊

I tried to watch this but the sound levels are all over the place. Music drowning out speech, wind doing the same. You need to get a better understanding of sound mixing. If anything, music isn't needed. You're trying to do too much with the sound. Just make the narration clear, ditch the unnecessary music and things will improve.
