INVALUABLE! Many times I am buying minis, maps, and more prior to running the adventure (still currently on Strixhaven) when I see a sale. But I was not in the slightest that the rules were that light. And in your Spelljammer review you expressed concerns over the lack of sourcebook material in that set. While I usually do not want to hear complaints that you see from a lot of RUclipsrs over every little thing, I do want to hear what you say, because I believe you look at it from different perspectives, compliments with criticism, and keep your criticism very fair. Thank you!

These are a huge investment for a very narrow play opportunity.
Seems like they are for collectors more than for people who want to play which is the direction WizKids has been taking things.
Still, it's super cool that they are available for those who want them. We are living in a golden age of mini selection.

Use the Space Combat Ruleset for Esper Genesis, which is basically D&D 5E in space...

Great review thank you. We’ll be using the flight path system for ship combat (seen in X-Wing, D&D: Attack Wing and Star Trek: Attack Wing). It’s a fluid system that scales well with Spelljammer with just a little bit of effort.

The Star Ship Warden RPG most likely could use these minis.

I think spell jammer had a better system with its older edition. Sure it's also thac0 but that can be converted.
But these are alright don't like rocks much but the ships are nice. Since the book says treat each ship like a dungeon which sucks.

    Good to know
I don’t think I would get these but it’s nice to see them though

The ship minis are still going to be extremely useful for me because with the asteroids present in several sets that means cover for shooting and then positioning does become important.

Something that I'm curious about is the 3D dimension of ship combat, which never seems to be talked about. In space, all ships are flying, so why aren't combat risers provided/encouraged?

Could the base sizes be a reference to the crash table as it says large huge and gargantuan? (I know the bases are medium large and huge but maybe they’re scaling the names up because they scaled the ships down)

Nice review Grady! I am definitely getting this set, the Bombard is an iconic Spelljammer ship (do love to have me some for my Giff platoon) and the Ancient Gold Dragon at this scale works fine as a Large sized Young one.
I was surprised, having not fully read the 5E rules... do they not have a hex based combat system? I thought for sure that's what they sell those Astral and Wildspace maps for... Weird. Ah well, in this case you can just use the old 2E Spelljammer ship to ship combat rules - while complex, they are not that hard to follow.

@@TheGallantGoblin I know its not what you were wanting the most but it's a must see for all fantasy fans, James Earl Jones is amazing in it! The soundtrack is also nothing short of legendary!
The 2nd film (Conan the destroyer) is also on it but its not near as good ( though the special FX are not bad in some scenes and Grace Jones is always a treat to watch).

I think larger-scale minis would possibly look better. The ships look clunky and kinda "cheap" to me- the gold dragon looking the best of the bunch.

  • @vancan242

Sort of sounds like you are blaming the mini's for a rules problem. I'd bet money that if WoTC had used some sort of standardized scale in the rules Wizkids would have used that to size the models. It looks to me like the only reason they went with 1"=50' is because there was no scale that the rules were easily divisible by, so they had to just pick one.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  Год назад

WizKids has to begin making minis way in advance of the book release which is why sometimes their products don’t make a lot of sense for the actual book that comes out. It’s definitely not WizKids’ fault and I do think they did what made most sense with the info they had. It is definitely a rules problem that I don’t think WizKids had insight into. -Grady
