In regards to this game and it's ending... I remember playing this when I was 13 years old in 1998 and tearing up the moment she said she loved him and not knowing if he heard her say that. After all they went through, that was heartbreaking especially with him telling her directly after she said that to herself to wait for him. To this day, this is still my favorite ending in any videogame I've ever played due to the emotional impact it had on me. 10/10
Also the way they did world build was fantastic and town and npc's brimmed with personality and interactivity. Hell everyone in the game is voiced which is quite insane on the scale of a 1998 rpg.
And take into account the whole soundtrack is made up of samples, that is why they can have songs playing in the background without turning off voice overs. It also allows for much higher quality and no interrupting if your disc is stratched.
First played Saga 2 years ago on the SSF emulator and it fucking blew me away! The sheer amount of ambition and creativity this game has is astonishing, there's nothing else like it. From the art style to the battle system, its literally the best game no one has ever played, and a true masterpiece of gaming

You can also buy a Japanese Saturn with Azel Panzer Dragoon with a little help from the internet you can play it for between 100 and 150 dollar. (And that is for the Saturn and Panzer Dragoon !! )
@@Wishmaster65 I bought the Japanese version back in like 2002 for like $30 new but it would not play on my American system with the 4 in 1 cart because PDS actually knows when there is a non-approved cart inserted! So like you said, you'd have to have a Japanese Saturn. But also, for a game like this, you'd really need to understand Japanese well to get the most out of it and to determine which words are made up/fantasy and which is really Japanese. Emulation is probably the only realistic way but I had bad luck the few times I tried with permanent crashes at spots. However, Saturn emulators have gotten MUCH better in the past year so it's likely less problematic now and I'll likely give it another shot. Even to this day, the game is enjoyable to me like few are.
Very neat game and it’s free roaming too, if I was to ever play a Panzer Dragoon game this is the one I would want to play. Hopefully Sega or somebody else remakes this game or at least re releases it so it doesn’t cost your left arm to get it!
The battles aren't too hard (at least at normal difficulty) but are really tense and cinematic, one of the best battle systems I have had the pleasure to use in an RPG and one I am always surprised has never been used elsewhere. I could imagine it working well in a sci-fi rpg with spaceships etc.
There has been a few games that used a similar battle system. Megaman Battle Network games(GBA/DS), Hybrid Heaven(N64), Black Rock Shooter (PSP), Parasite eve 1(PSX), Vagrant Story(PSX)... at least those are the ones I recall off top of my head but none are quite the same as PDS.
Just as a side note, the game when played on an analogue monitor looks WAY WAY clearer than this... this looks like 140p but the game actually feels more like 600-700p on analogue.
One of the best games ever made sound effects background music and graphics back on that time its is the best underated game only legends knows this game

Thank you so much for the upload, i am currently playing this game and your longplay video really helps me. Wish you could make a new video based on the secrets and sidequests.
I was going to do them but I'd have to extend the video to 2 parts and we didnt want to do that. Sadly most extra's really aren't worth it. By the time you get around obtaining a reward you'll often have better stuff available at stores.
Man I love the first time you play inside the Tower fighting the imperial ships with the badass theme song in the background. My favourite part in the game.
I remember watching the opening cutscene in Panzer Dragoon Orta's extra content. It captivated me and then realizing that this game was released on the ill fated Sega Saturn and I also found out that the source code has been lost. So a remake likely won't happen anytime soon or Sega would need to make from scratch again.
Yeah, who knew it would blow up in price so much! I actually have my own story...had two copies bought on release. I think I was worried my pre-order wasn't going to be fulfilled (low 1st print run) so I got jump at buying a copy when I saw it at another store. However it so happen my pre-order was actually fulfilled too. I was perfectly content with keep it unopened forever but on a whim I decided to give it to my friend for his birthday which was about the same time. I'm not saying I regret it as a gift is a gift and its great knowing he played and loved the game. But it funny to think I would have probably had an unopened copy today if I gave my friend something else ;)
Replaying this game right now on the SSF emulator. Really wish that Sega would put a Sega Saturn Mini with games such as Panzer Dragoon, Bug, Shining the Holy Ark on it. Hell, I would take a rerelease of this game on the NS like Panzer Dragoon.
I didnt even know this game was a RPG untill someone on Twitched mentioned that it was. Sadly it came out when noone was really into Saturn :( I still played mine a lot then but, dang. This game is 1 of the rarest actual games to own now. As far as like, normal editions of a game, not counting some rare defect special edition version of games, this is 1 of the most expensive 'normal version' games EVER to own, period.
Thank you for this! I watched an hour so far. I forgot how well done this game was, I haven't played it since I sold it off 20 years ago. I'll watch more as time allows, it really sucked me in again. I still own a Saturn, I need to research the Pseudo Saturn cart .
This is the Sega masterpiece none played. People usually complain about Shenmue not having the credits it deserves but at least even younger gamers have played the remaster collection but Panzer Dragoon Saga is just in the memories of the very same hard-core gamers. Sega should release a comprehensive collection of all the PD games. Besides being my favourite game released on the Saturn, I consider it one of my top ten games.
Hey ! First, thanks a lot for what you've done here, I checked on your videos a lot to find those "secondary quests" (pardon my english, not sure about that term) I also just realised you edit out some fights at the end (in the tower for example) which is great for the viewer, but also it made me thought I was progressing so slowly cause I was basing my "estimation" on your timecode haha,
Panzer Dragoon Saga = Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind + Dune + Mad Max with a sprinkling of How to Train your Dragon replacing fantasy elements with Biopunk In my opinion, Edge looks like a cross between Kaneda Shotaro and Max Rockatansky
I own this game and loved it. Gonna have to get a working Saturn to play it again. Wish I had the cases, the 4 discs I have would be worth some good cash now with the original boxes and I have the sega Saturn magazine demo disc as well.
Buy a japanese model and get a pseudo saturn cart with buit in memory expansion and RAM. This way you'll have the cheapest version of the console as well as every periphiral you may need for all the games in one with a region free mod. The whole set should not cost you more than 100$ on average and it's worth it.
Here’s the irony: There were two print runs of this game in the US due to “high demand”, yet this game is still considered very rare. It’s rare because it was expensive even back in the day, so a lot of people didn’t buy it. There are still thousands of sealed copies in warehouses that haven’t seen the light of day.
This game is affordable if you get the japanese. Thank you for this upload, I have used it to translate. I'm on disc 4 now, not far to go. Incredible game, it is as good as FFVII and Ocarina.
i don't want to exactly say i want a remake of this game but...considering this game is lost to time, i wouldn't mind seeing this remade from scratch. it's so sad they lost the source code to this. :(
I know this game technically came out in Japan right before it ( and although they were undoubtedly in development at the same time) but I can't help but feeling that this game took some influences from Xenogears as well. Or maybe it was the other way around? Or maybe they're both a good example of a product of their time. So many things just feel so similar.
I had the first two panzer dragoon games back in the day. Awesome. Think I'd moved on to the Nintendo 64 and never knew this existed. Sega should remake Panzer and bring it to the PS5
Developer do not exist, Sega lost source code + dont have enough money for remake this game (Panzer Dragon Saga cost them 50M $ in 1998, now is something like 150M $ - it's Final Fantasy VII Remake budget, for comparation now their higest budget game is Like a Dragon Yakuza with only 21M $ budget). Even if Sega remake this game, it would be ended as a low budget abomination like Shenmue 3.
It's such a shame this game was given a bad hand when it came out because you can see the effort and artistry that went into it. I would love to see this in some shape or form get re-released or remade for people to experience this missing part of video game history.
For a fifth generation jrpg I’m blown away by how advanced the camera and movement system is, does anyone know of any other 3D ps1/saturn rpgs with a similar camera/movement system?
I think this game is the most technically advanced in that whole generation if you ask me. Just like Shenmue on Dreamcast, it stands above anything else on the platform
@@alex.starostin Honestly you’re not wrong, this game has a better camera system than final fantasy 10 which came out 3 years later on a next generation system at that time. It feels more like a late sixth gen rpg for PS2 and I can’t find any 5th gen rpg to compare it to. Skies of Arcadia is probably the most similar one but that’s 6th gen. Regardless I hope this game gets a remaster or at least emulated on modern platforms. more people deserve to play it.
@@Shaka_Zulu this game definitely deserves to be played by a lot more people. I'm sure it'll have a remaster some time in the future. until then it remains a greatest hidden gem people only heard about but never played

It's easily emulable now!
i guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
Playing it for the 1st time rn after years of wanting to play it. Well.. the hype on this is real.
Still one of my favorite games to this day. The soundtrack is beyond memorable and definitely was an experience like no other back in 1998.
I just bought my fiancée a copy of this game since she lost her old copy many years ago.
To say she was happy is an understatement :)
You must be rich!
I bet that set you back a bit of dough!
I've got this on my Saturn via an awesome mod. The only way I'm going to enjoy it through the original Saturn hardware without getting into serious debt....
It's just the most incredible game. I've never been so happy to finally get to play it in my own home.
@@HerecomestheCalavera I've seen PAL copies on Ebay that go for some $120+, of course no box or instructions (those seem to ship for nothing short of $800), just the CDs and in all likelihood played the living fuck out of, but still, not exactly unaffordable. I'm thinking of getting myself one of those retro consoles and I've been thinking about a Saturn so who knows, one of these days, maybe...?
thank you so much for making and publishing this video. I feel like this game was so enigmatic and sought after that i never actually bothered to watch the gameplay. Very interesting stuff!
I'm glad, If you want to play it the legitimate way, try the japanese version it's actually very cheap. You can use this video or an online walkthrough to help you through.
I was going through my closet the other day, and came across all 4 discs of this game hidden away in some random unmarked CD sleeves. I forgot all about this game. Going to have to dig out the Saturn and finally finish this classic!
YOU HAVE A SATURN!?!?!?!?!?!
Ive wanted one for my daughter for so long but they are going for $400 :(
@@puregameplay7916 Saturn's can be gotten for 50 bucks.
@@MrYodi2007 Lolno. Those are the fake emulator systems that China puts out. It looks and feels like a Saturn and plays the same game, but it is NOT a real sega saturn.
REAL sega saturns are going for $250+
@@puregameplay7916 dude I literally just purchased an authentic Japanese saturn for like 45 bucks and 2 more American Saturn's for like 60 each.
@@MrYodi2007 from where.
If handled correctly, The Panzer Dragoon franchise would make a pretty awesome movie for the silver screen.
Best game on the saturn PERIOD and my top 6 games of ALL time, going back since the apple 2/e age...
What are the other five games?
Some of these music tracks are so good, it's just fucking ridiculous. Probably the best percussion ever heard in gaming.
This is favorite game in my life.
GET READY FOR THE REMAKE
@@marusux791 bad news. only PD1 and 2 Zwei were announced as getting a remake. Saga is still very much up in the air. :(
Top 6 game of all time and going back since the apple 2/e age, I have seen it all.
Best saturn game PERIOD.
@@lordxmugen yeah, Sag won't be remade cause of the lost source
@@voutespancar no, you can REMAKE it. you just cant RERELEASE it.
Oh, man! This rocks. I never saw the value in no-comment longplay videos until just now that I wanted to remember specific dialogues of this.
I am displeased to find out I played through the whole game without knowing the Dragon could barrel roll.
lol
It's the best almost useless feature haha
@@nikodem123asdf I remember that with the barrel roll you could get extra speed, but only after some leveling, or getting a item, I don't remember exactly.
@@nikodem123asdf do you see the speedometer in the hud? It's composed by three green dots. But there's a fourth dot, isn't it? That's the extra speed and is a red dot.
@@FranMatsusaka yes there's an extra speed level, you need to get an item from the desert: interact with the plants that send spores into the air and then come back later, you'll be able to pick up the thing you need. In order to enable the last speed option you need to barrel roll at top speed.
There's also some accessory that lets you lock the speed with one of the buttons but I don't remember more detail about it.
Probably one of my favorite moments in my life is getting this game for my best friend. It was his number one wanted game and I got it for him for Christmas. His reaction and hug said it all. :)
does he still own a copy tho? it can make him rich now 😄
@@alex.starostin It's not for sale but thank you for asking :)
@@FATE522 I don't have the money 😂
With the original and Zwei getting remakes and Orta's Xbox One X version being fantastic I'm really hoping Saga gets the remake treatment soon, it's a phenomenal game.
I heard they lost the original data to saga. Could be tough
@@AbstractReplayer Not to mention the way they programmed for the Saturn is entirely different to a modern game. They'd have to rebuild it from scratch either way and with Sega being practically bankrupt these days, I highly doubt it will happen.
sadly the source code for Saga has long since lost.
@@Bristecom mostly because most Sega "fans" can't decide what they want. or rather refuse to support the company because it wasn't a game they wanted.
Why do people keep asking for remakes? Remakes suck. The originals 99.9% of the time are always better. What is wrong with your brains? Do you LIKE repeating history with inferior versions of games? I don't get gamers of this generation at all. I don't get it.
Fantastic capture. Easily the best looking one I've seen on RUclips.
Still own my NA copy and have great memories playing this and listening to Fear Factory, Korn, Def Tones, Soul Fly, Sevendust, Mad Ball, etc. Good Times, Great Oldies!
Panzer dragoon saga and Nausica of the valey of the wind look so familiar. Its like they share the same world.Same monsters, same dressing people, same apocalyptic scenes.Same feelings...
It was one of the main inspirations for the game, even certain elements of the story are similar across the game and the movie.
Moebius is the inspiration source. Moebius joined in panzee dragoon projects. Nausica is heavily inspired by Moebius.
My favourite RPG game ever! Thank you for the upload I miss this game soo much
The music in this game is superb.
Thank you so much for this video. I am playing the game through for my first time ever. Actual hardware and loving it so much.
Only thing is that the subtitles go by so quickly sometimes that I miss what they are saying but with your video I was quickly and easily able to navigate to the sections on more than one occasion and get myself filled in.
This game was like $150 in 2000 and 18 years later its $800...I'm never going to get the chance to play this game ever. At least I can watch it!
You can play it on emulators, or on a few burned CD-Rs. It's worth it.
@@Ehal256 Nice! I did not know that, Thanks!
You can also buy a Japanese Saturn with Azel Panzer Dragoon with a little help from the internet you can play it for between 100 and 150 dollar. (And that is for the Saturn and Panzer Dragoon !! )
@@zanthiel2009 I got something even better Pseudo Saturn. Then buy the reproduction game. I waited for this for years.
I remember when sega saturn magazine put disc 1 free on its covers. I must have played the first part 50 times.
I just finished it, on my Saturn, well worth it.
Amazing game-shows how no matter what quality of animation, good storytelling alwayys trumps all that
Worth $1200?
@@GigaDonk99 In my opinion it's worth it, but you can buy it cheaper.
Very neat game and it’s free roaming too, if I was to ever play a Panzer Dragoon game this is the one I would want to play. Hopefully Sega or somebody else remakes this game or at least re releases it so it doesn’t cost your left arm to get it!
I've played everything on basically every support, but this game remains one of the best ever.
I find this so relaxing to watch.
Really shows what the Saturn hardware was truly capable of. Damn i want this game, but it is so pricey
Emulation?
Worth playing just for the soundtrack alone. The music in this game is amazing, gives heavy 90's old school vibes
Just as a side note, the game when played on an analogue monitor looks WAY WAY clearer than this... this looks like 140p but the game actually feels more like 600-700p on analogue.
Looks glorious via SCART on my 29'' Panasonic CRT. :)
One of the best games ever made sound effects background music and graphics back on that time its is the best underated game only legends knows this game
Das Spiel is wirklich der Hammer... ich habe es schon mehrmals durch gespielt und würde es jeder zeit wieder anfangen... schon bei dem Intro bekomme ich Gänsehaut... ich habe viele schöne erinnerungen mit dem Spiel
So many names of that game. Saga in the US, Azel in Europe and RPG in japan. But I really do love that game.
Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG was the japanese name. Both europe and us shared the same name:Panzer Dragoon Saga
the music of ost are very nice i love it really ! very old school i find ! a little side oriental in the music
I just got a copy of this magnificent gem 💎 😊
6:25:30 I know that voice actor (the one for Paet's father). He's must be the same one that voices Eggman in the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA (Junpei Takaguchi)! Cool.
Thank you for uploading a longplay of this beautiful game!
It is indeed the same actor (Viaman in this game). The more you know.
I still have this game and it is still great.
Most magical game i,ve ever played.
I used to love playing this game at Toys R Us.
Never seen this game until now
Very underrated 👍
I played this game before, a friend of mine let me borrow it from Garfield Park a long time ago.
Such a great game! I sold mine for 300 USD back in 2003. I really wish I didn't.
Hell, I would take a rerelease of this game on the NS like Panzer Dragoon.
is the SSF emulator also availble on PC (Windows)?
@@NikiWonoto26 It is but the game crashes at certain points, at least it did for me when I was first playing this game.
Glide Dragons are the creatures that appeared in the original game's sixth episode. I like when they reuse monsters.
Iam in Portugal , in 2023 and a Start Playng 23 years ago….. onde of the Best games Ever ❤❤❤❤
Just finished with 100% everything including excellent ratings; great game; cost me almost $1000; worth it
Thank you for this! I watched an hour so far. I forgot how well done this game was, I haven't played it since I sold it off 20 years ago. I'll watch more as time allows, it really sucked me in again. I still own a Saturn, I need to research the Pseudo Saturn cart .
Ok, I finally finished watching. That ending was a mind trip at first. Thanks again.
@@Cafeman_2D you're welcome !
Can u imagine this game on vr. Omg ❤
13:09 - 18:21 SFX
I like those SFX effects.
Hey !
First, thanks a lot for what you've done here, I checked on your videos a lot to find those "secondary quests" (pardon my english, not sure about that term)
I also just realised you edit out some fights at the end (in the tower for example) which is great for the viewer, but also it made me thought I was progressing so slowly cause I was basing my "estimation" on your timecode haha,
Lol cheers! We cut out some repetitive fights sometimes. Was especially necessary with this video or it’d surpass the 12h limit :)
Yes you're correct there's one sidequests i sadly couldn't show due to our time limit guidelines from 4 years ago.
This is how good ol time looks and feels like.
One of my favourite games ever
Panzer Dragoon Saga = Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind + Dune + Mad Max with a sprinkling of How to Train your Dragon replacing fantasy elements with Biopunk
In my opinion, Edge looks like a cross between Kaneda Shotaro and Max Rockatansky
Yes throw in a bit of Star Wars into the mix and it's exactly how I see the series
and legend of zelda
Check out the comic Arzach to see one of the main inspirations for the series.
Here’s the irony:
There were two print runs of this game in the US due to “high demand”, yet this game is still considered very rare.
It’s rare because it was expensive even back in the day, so a lot of people didn’t buy it. There are still thousands of sealed copies in warehouses that haven’t seen the light of day.
Seriously? I feel they should just do a re-print of these games like they did sometime ago with PS2 Yakuzas
I wonder who owns them and why they don't put them up for auction.
Nikodem R I heard somewhere that they lost the source code for the game so that seems unlikely
@@blipparipa5661 If they still have executables or disc images or whatever. They could probably still reprint for saturn, I'd think.
it was a 4 disc behemoth, so of course it was expensive to publish.
This game is affordable if you get the japanese. Thank you for this upload, I have used it to translate. I'm on disc 4 now, not far to go. Incredible game, it is as good as FFVII and Ocarina.
to this day i always like playing this game while i play either the "Dragonheart" or "How to train your dragon" movies in the background
The most underrated video game of all time
A highly epic classic!!👍
Ok never played this game
Definitely something different in a good way-psychedelic experience haha
Thanks for the playthrough 👍
i don't want to exactly say i want a remake of this game but...considering this game is lost to time, i wouldn't mind seeing this remade from scratch. it's so sad they lost the source code to this. :(
What an beautiful game. Don’t you think?
I know this game technically came out in Japan right before it ( and although they were undoubtedly in development at the same time) but I can't help but feeling that this game took some influences from Xenogears as well. Or maybe it was the other way around? Or maybe they're both a good example of a product of their time. So many things just feel so similar.
Both games were in production for a long time and fot released at a similar time so I think it's just that the trends of the time influenced both.
They remade the first game, it came out on 03/26/2020. (for Switch)
The developers are remaking the 2nd game and may remake Saga.
holy fuck this game looks better than tomb raider
My emulator crashed right at the combat tutorials, RetroArch with Yabause core (only core that would load the game) on PC. Any tips?
That ending... Just.
.. Wow...
this game had no right to be that good. It still looks fun today after like 25 years
I had the first two panzer dragoon games back in the day. Awesome. Think I'd moved on to the Nintendo 64 and never knew this existed.
Sega should remake Panzer and bring it to the PS5
7:56:50
I remember being so mad at the Empire watching this scene when I played this game years back. All those folks getting killed.
Sega needs to remake this hidden Gem
Wouldn’t it be awesome if Sega came out with a remake of this as a response to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
I always wanted to play this and Burning Rangers If I was filthy Rich I would get into game collecting again and buy some Saturn games
Need a remake of this, come on sega
Developer do not exist, Sega lost source code + dont have enough money for remake this game (Panzer Dragon Saga cost them 50M $ in 1998, now is something like 150M $ - it's Final Fantasy VII Remake budget, for comparation now their higest budget game is Like a Dragon Yakuza with only 21M $ budget). Even if Sega remake this game, it would be ended as a low budget abomination like Shenmue 3.
If literature has Moby Dick and film has Citizen Kane, then gaming will have this.
Playing this right now 😎
It's such a shame this game was given a bad hand when it came out because you can see the effort and artistry that went into it.
Im playing the remake of the first game rn and this seems a lot more interesting.
Saw a copy of this at my local game shop for $679.
Jesus Christ!
Imagine this game in Unreal Engine 5 if it gets a remake.
even to this day i believe that the dragon's lazers are underpowered by a massive margin, with sniper, high vulcan, triburst (take that drenholm!!! XD) and then the pulverizer (assassin was weak as hell! and it could miss to boot!) you could just shoot your way to victory as long as there wasn't any "anti-shot" marks
If they ever make a sequel they should make it like Skies of Arcadia where you travel the world on your dragon.
