The movie was written before introducing Discord.
Basically, the reason the B-Team wasn't in this movie is that in terms of power, Starlight, Trixie, Discord, and Thorax are roughly equal to .8 Squirrel Girls; almost as close to being unbeatable without actually being Squirrel Girl.
Seeing this movie in the cinemas, I think I was the oldest child there and when the Storm King exploded in the end there, you won't believe how many kids laughed.

If the hippogriffs were not willing to give up the pearl, Twi would still need a contingency plan in place to ensure that they could still use whatever the HG's had to fight the Storm King and save the world. If you want to preserve the greater good, you must be willing to perform lesser and necessary evils to do so. Plus, from Pinkie's lack of tact nearly getting them put into slavery by the fish people to RD questioning their would-be executioners why they aren't dead and even giving Tempest and the storm guard a giant rainbow colored signal that screamed "Princess and entourage on board, come kick our ass and bring us in chains to the Storm King" to the rest of her friends contributing next to nothing if anything throughout the whole trip, they haven't really given Twilight a reason to not be pissed at every one of them.

The quality of the movie is something out of Don Bluth’s films:
low budget, simple songs, near-cliche plot, but what compensates is the charm.
Waifu Laifu Yeah. While the big-name animation studios like Disney and DreamWorks will spend with a budget of $150 million or more, MLP the Movie only spent $6.5 million in production. Don Bluth did the same in his 80s heyday.

I’ll bet this is the studio’s way of not confusing new audiences when they first watch this film, hence why secondary characters like Starlight, Discord, Trixie, Flurry Heart, and various significant others don’t play a role or even appear in this movie.
Except that Starlight is a Main character too, so your idea is wrong.
titan hades Technically, she’s a recurring character since she doesn’t appear very often with the Mane 6.
She appears more often then a couple of the Mane 6. She's a main character.
Fluttershy was in 12 episodes in season 7, Starlight was in more. They were both in the same amount in Season 8.
Unless you want to call Fluttershy a recurring character now....

I'm still not canon since I look more like a classical hippogriff. I enjoy the movie/show design but since I chose this to be different from the norm I don't think I'll change.

okay so they defineteley had some problems with powerful landings and kicks in action scenes, but its amazing how high the quality is whitout giving up on the series' style
