That's what she said jokes are always appropriate and appreciated 👍
Glad to be of service - I was on a roll.
@@GosforthHandyman ha ha
Bog standard joke , lol
I never thought at the start of lock down that I would be sat in my kitchen , looking at toilet roll holders with a Geordie handyman ! ! Thank you that was informative and amusing as usual .
What better thing to do during the lockdown? 👍😆
Me too! RUclips is great, I've also learned how to, in theory, service a petrol lawnmower.
@@gwendavies7431 giggle. Love that. "In theory" hahahha.
Nice tip on the Setting Tool and love the dust catcher
Great Tutorial....it will help me loads! I loved it when you said"I know it's fugly" and "That's what she said"!!! I had a few good chuckles!!! 😊👍
I did maintenance in a hotel part time for a few years. So I repaired a lot of these. They often come lose. I recently found a model made from sheet metal. It has a big surface area and is glued on with double sided foam tape. Indestructible and fast to apply.
These must be a full time job to maintain in hotels. 😂👍
Thank you so much for this video! 🙏 My toilet roll holder has been falling down for a while, I had no clue how to put it back in place. I googled it, not too sure I would find anything 🙈, and found your channel. 10 minutes later, I was all sorted and fixed it back up by myself! You have a new subscriber!
And this is a PhD on Toilet Roll Holder. Well done!
Thank you so much. This was exactly what I needed right now. I was fed up with my toilet roll falling off and thought I would have a go at fixing it and needless to say I couldn't and it was in pieces but now its back and fixed 😁
Those fixings worked well, I didn't realise I needed a setting tool so I've learn't something new ... thanks!
Thanks for your help.
I was able to tighten up a loose tp roll, and didn't break anything!
Thankyou for this video, I am going to buy a new holder and attempt to fix it just how you have shown
+1 for the tiled wall drilling video!
Cool - will add it to the list. 👍
I agree. Cracked a few tiles over the years. Nothing worse than fitting a floating vanity cabinet to a room tiles floor to ceiling.
Thank you so much appreciated hope you had a great weekend x
Thank you for making this video. My loo roll holder is up at last. It had been drooping for a year or more.
I put a new toilet roll holder on my wall, and because it was a little bit loose, I decided to take it off and drill a bigger hole with a bigger plug, but I drilled through the only pipe in the whole wall going to my radiator!!!!! I drilled it right in the centre of it, a 10mm pipe !!!! Water was gushing out!!! Flooded the toilet that I had just re-decorated, and the hall way , and after turning the water off, and eventually the water stopped coming out, I admittedly had a cry! My toilet roll holder was just like the one you have shown, mine went straight in the bin, and I havnt attempted to put another one on yet.
Andy, that was good. I fitted a self adhesive toilet roll holder to a painted hollow door aver 30 years ago and it is till in perfect condition. Admittedly I cleansed the door very thoroughly first!
Wow - impressive! Giving it a good wipe first is clearly key. 👍😀
Great to have you back sir. Been a while.
Just discovered your podcast with Peter/ 10 minute work shop. Listen everyday on the way to work. 😃💪 keep em coming. A great listen everyone 👏
Liam Behan unfortunately they have stopped making the podcasts, but there is still a good backlog to listen to
Thank you! Yeah, bit in limbo at the minute due to the move. Glad you're enjoying the podcast series - that was fun! 👍👊
No more podcasts 😢. But I understand work and family commitments. Hope you and the family are all doing well.
Looking forward to the next video 😀. Take care 👍
These screws are Philips head screws :-) sometimes this is what you need or have (just watching your vid about common screws and drills) never say never ! enjoy this channel , thanks!!!
Laughed out loud at the "in case you want to use it underwater". :D (The sideways ones are for storing a spare roll)
Cheers! Yeah, I've seen the spare roll thing in hotels. Not sure why your average punter on Amazon would want to do that. 👍😂
I know you mentioned adhesive fixings were asking for trouble... but I used silicone to fix mine to a ceramic tile and it's honestly rock solid!
great to have you back
I actually purchased that ‘modern equivalent’ one, works a charm 😅
Also, you can get some pretty strong double sided tape, look for the stuff with red backing, you’d be able to build a building with the stuff 😂
I actually like the old fashioned toilet roll holder
Who knew there was so much to talk about toilet roll holders 😂 great video bud! Interestingly the one you pointed out on amazon that you said was the wrong way up, when I worked on the renovation of a boutique hotel, we fitted two toilet roll holders in each bathroom, one as normal where you would usually find one, and the other just off the floor, vertically, the purpose of this was to hold the spare loo roll 👍
Nice to see you put the toilet roll on the right way too!
Yeah, I've seen a few in hotels like that used for the 'spare roll'. Not sure why other than it being easy to drop a roll on to from a height perhaps? 🤔😀
Got 2 of those exact same holders from 10 years ago, the "mortice and tennon" square joint between the backplate and bar had a tolerance!! of about 1.5mm and the screw would never hold it. A pounds worth of Poundland's finest epoxy filled and stuck the M&T and ensured the screw never moved. I think Tommy may have made a penny as well.....
Ha ha - that'll fix it. Good job! 👍
Wet wipes are life-changing. I wish we had them when we were younger. You don't know what you're missing :) (of course, a sprayer/bidet is nicer, but those are difficult to come across in the US)
Pete
Handheld sprayers FTW.
@@juliemandell Unless you're in India, even in a very nice hotel. Everyone knew not to drink the water, but a few didn't think not to spray it up their bums. Sickness abounded.
If you've got an open ended toilet roll holder like the one in the video. Which way should it face? Outwards or inwards?
A very relevant subject. I salute you Sir ✋
Indeed - no worries bud. 👍😀
Dad fitted those holders that are tiled in as you tile 20 years ago, with a recess and spring loaded thing. Brilliant until they make the rolls fatter! You don't get more, the core size changes. That's what she said😉.
We have the mobile phone loo roll holder with the lip you mentioned. It’s great!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad we hardly have any plaster board walls in our house. Stay safe and lucky move (hopefully, in the end).
Keith Brown had the same (or other) ever lasting problems when getting moved and that was before the Covid Epoque.
Cheers Hans! Yeah, we've moved house a lot over the years and never seen anything like this. Been dragging on for 5 months now. Stay safe too! 👍👊
The 'That's what she said jokes' that you slicky threw in had me laughing more than I should have been 😄
Being apprehensive about drilling into tiles I attached a small bathroom 'wire basket' organiser to a tiled wall using those outdoor sticky fixers. Having then got a towel rail I decided to drill this time and using a special tile drill bit it worked a treat; I thought I do the same with the organiser but those sticky fixers are stuck so tight it will probably ruin it if I try to wrench it off!
They only come off when you don't want them to come off. 😂👍
Thank you 🙏
Thanks Great video!
I so miss Screwfix, Wickes and Meat & Potato pie's from the local chippy. Been watching for little while; we're out the other end of lock down here in NZ so be Safe and take care. Funny as fU(K - well done!
Good luck coming out the other side of this! We're pig sick of it over here but there's a small group that seems to want to be in lockdown forever. 😂👍
Great tips, thanks!!
The bottom half of my bathroom walls are 12mm plywood sheets with plasterboard over the top so I have no trouble screwing bog roll holders on!
I'm jealous! I would seriously consider ply + drywall lined walls for my next project - or perhaps OSB even. Very useful! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman When I first found it, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous, but it's actually a great idea!
thank you so much for this
Great video Andy thanks
Thanks! I fixed it!
Grub screw is missing from our toilet roll holder which is really wobbly. I've tried pulling the holder off the wall but it won't budge. I'm afraid of making a hole in the wall if I pull too hard. What do I do?
Andy I know it’s off topic with this video, but I need to upgrade some cheapo Argos/Ikea type recessed draw runners. I have to keep buying new ball bearing draw runners as they just don’t take the normal use. The ones I have are recessed in and I have no room to replace with good quality side mount runners. I have literally about two to three mm each side of the draw. Without remodelling which would be my last resort any ideas on how to upgrade to a better type of runner.
Nice video🙌
21mins. About big roll holders. I'll watch that!
I strangely watched this in the spare 21min I had, whilst rigorously testing mine.
Better than all the covid rubbish
Splendid - hope it was useful! This one wiped me out. 👍
Mine isn't a grub screw it's like a tiny Allen key, it's hard to tighten with that
I'd put the grips on at 90 degrees and rest the backplate on a bit of scrop wood whilst drilling. That would feel much more secure. Love the channel :¬}
Cheers - yup, that would work! Take care! 👍😀
I'd be inclined to screw the backplate to some scrap wood. Much safer option if you're a cack-handed.
Thanks!
Nice thanks
found this video very informative and useful saty safe
What fixing would you use for a shower grab bar, for someone who has a disability, that’s going to be put onto a tiled plasterboard wall?
My one falls of the wall I done everything on the box it's stressful
Great video. It lookes like the handle is facing the wrong direction.
Good job!
LOL over here in the US folks are trying to return the TP hoard. Department stores are NO...not gonna happen.
Hi Andy, some good tips as usual. While, as you say, a substantial backplate and good fixings are essential, the cantilever load with those one sided bog roll holders doesn't help.
Have exactly the same shit ticket holder,
Been up and working for last 4 years, but one of the kids managed to dislodge it,
Bars nice and tight back plate firmly secured, but using the grub screw can't seem to stop it moving or even falling of or dropping off
Took backplate of and offered it up to the holder, plate seem a tad to short, also the lips on the backplate look like slightly different widths one side is slightly wider than the other end and overall length looks to small, athough is been up for the last 4 to 5 years
Any thoughts,
Come on! You’re giving trade secrets away now! 🤣🤣
Ha ha - especially with regards to the correct way loo roll should be put on the holder. 👍
10:27 👍but then at 10:35 👎- can you tell I work for Henkel? (we make Loctite). Incidentally, (sounding like you now), you can get different strengths of thread-locker including one that would work on the grub screw and still let you remove it later. Keep up the good work - I can't say that I have ever seen a video on fixing a bog-roll holder before😂😂
I never knew I needed a setting tool. Any chance to a link to one?
Thanks
www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-heavy-duty-setting-tool/8499g?cm_sp=managedredirect-_-screwsfixings-_-settingtool&_requestid=948988
Screwfix sell them.
www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-heavy-duty-setting-tool/8499g
Yup - just go for a decent one. Cheaper ones break straight away. The Rawlplug one looks like it'll do the job. Also links on here: gosforthhandyman.com/products-i-use/uk-based/ 👍
Buy the one in the link, don't be tempted to buy the one that's 5 quid cheaper, it breaks.
Nice dunny role holder vid apart from you have it facing the wrong way there's a bigger chance of pulling the TP off the holder as you've done it as opposed to the other way around just saying also a good position for the dunny roll holder is 700 mm x 700 mm
Good info, however, 21 minutes is excessive. Probably could have been a 5 minute video.
What size molly bolts plz
But surely the most important thing to ask: Is the toilet roll itself hanging the right way?
Yes, it is. There is only one way. 😂👍
Just put a new one up old style like you were showing , £1.90 delivered from Amazon (prime) ,it's made from anodized aluminium with a plastic roller perfect.
Does the job - will probably last forever. 👍
Remember when I moved in here. It had the wall plate, and the tightening grub screw, both fine, except the grub screw was at the top, and the whole thing upside down, so the bend in the bar pointed down, so the shit tickets just fell off the holder. Who TF fitted that?!
Lol... that's mental. Shit tickets. 😂
I must of been on something when i brought my £90 loo roll holder and my Mrs for the life of her cannot switch the rolls over coz i fitted each end is too close together apparently, so its a blue job through and through, as solid as u can get tho.
Hahahah ‘thats what she said’ cracked me up, oldie but goodie!!
Also loving my mac exclusively metric tape measure 👍🏻
Where do you get the grab screws, I have one that is worn out and needs to be drilled out and I have no replacement. :(
Oh well, found them www.ebaystores.co.uk/Bolt-Base/Grub-Screws-Cone-Point-/_i.html?_fsub=7222189015&_sid=664367595&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322
Yeah, loads on Amazon, Ebay etc. 👍
@@GosforthHandyman how do you measure those screws. I have an electronic gadget and it tells me it's 4.65mm. So is that m4 or m5? 😕
If you can abseil from it the kids probably will struggle to rip it off!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣🤣
Indeed - wise words! 👍😂
I absolutely hate toilet roll holders that make lots of sound when unrolling the paper. Since my toilet is relatively small I hang my rolls from a colorful solid core electric wire with a small piece of plastic tube as a spindle. Just twisting/untwisting the wire when switching rolls. Desired height adjustment is easily done. Perfect for my needs ;)
That'll do the job! 👍
I built my own toilet roll holder. It holds a roll on a hardwood dowel at the top, and underneath is a cubby to hold a spare roll. No one ever gets caught short when the roll runs out...
Sometimes getting a longer grip screw (locks handle part to wall bracket) does the trick.
Good tip! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman I've found that a shim of cardboard (loo roll tube) for the grub screw to bite against helps a lot.
Nice one Andy ...at 19:01 mins I noticed she didn't say owt....
I had to stop myself. 😂
@@GosforthHandyman ha ha
My Ikea one has been good for years I think it was only a fiver, better than than picking up a roll that previously had someone else's brown fingers inside inside it. Always remember to put the roll on so it hangs down at the front or a psycho like me may rip it off the wall lol
If you bought a huge amount of loo rolls please check the "use by date" so you don't use detreated roils.
I also like to start it off by hand 😆
That's what she sa...
How to fix a toiletholder. Okey, and i look at the time 20:59.....But of cause this is the Gosforth Handyman
That's short for me. 😂
Careful not to overtighten the grub screw as the backplates frequently are made of pressed steel and can deform making it impossible to anchor the holder to the plate
Indeed - if the thread goes life gets tricky. 👍
A designer only gives ideas to a home owner and then the designer don’t leave in that house .
A toilet paper holder should be strong .
Willing to withstand push and pull a toilet paper holder gets more used tan a towel holder.. just screw a 6 inches screw on the 2x4 and you will have a tp forever
fast forward to 8:50 for repair instructions
Andy. You've been in lockdown far too long mate. Getting excited by bog roll holders? Mate, have a word with yourself!
This one drained me. 😂
Are you wishing you hadn’t dismantled the workshop now? Have you managed to do any joinery work for customers during lockdown?
I just don't bother with them , just place roll on cistern . Reminds me of loo roll dollys.
Untill some clumsy oaf accidentally knocks it and you endup with pre soaked toilet roll
Also theres always loads of empty tubes on top of the cistern waiting for a swim
19:22 - cue the discussion as to which way the toilet roll should go on the holder !
Was exactly what I was thinking. It was about two things, hygiene and the roll rolling off (or not?) What is the proper way?
@@jacques7799 The proper way is to hang over the roll (i.e. in front) and not under (behind) otherwise you could pick up on your fingers what could be smeared on the wall....
There is only one way. The other way is the start of insanity. 👍
🤩
Brilliant video! I've fitted loads of these - exactly as you did, but WHY can't the manufacturers make the fittings more robust in the first place? It would take almost zero effort to improve the product....
...and don't get me started on what happens when the grub screw fixing part wears to the point it will no longer hold the holder!!@#@#! :-)
I know - tell me about it. We can put NASA capable computers in our pockets but we can't get simple stuff like this right! 😂👍
"That what she said" did have me giggling, 2nd one especially. Was disappointed there was no blue roll toilet holder.
I did debate making a giant holder to dispense 50 rolls at a time but... no workshop. 😂
@@GosforthHandyman would have been epic, such a shame.
Double sideed sticky toilet holder ....This is not a bug that a feature :-)
Sad times, sad times. 😂👍
👍
👍👊
Amazon is a joke, I have mates who are part of some dodgy scheme where they get told to buy and review random products (normally under £30), then after they submit a review they get refunded and keep whatever it is. Broken review system, always read the 1 star reviews like you say, they will be the only real ones. At least on Screwfix you get real proper reviews, tradesmen aren't going to waste their time writing a review unless it's really good, or really bad to be fair.
Ha, yes - I've heard of a lot of different dodgy review scams. Products sent to random addresses too - so the reviewer never even sees the product. It's the biggest con going and packed with dangerous and fake goods. 🙄👍
@ 16:02 They don't teach you that at college!
If you buy branded goods on Amazon it will be fine.
Sadly a lot are fake branded and it's very difficult to tell what's real and what's fake. Been stung many times with 'genuine' goods on Amazon, Ebay etc. 🙄👍
And then you find it is pointing in the wrong direction - or thats whay happens with me anyway
She says a lot doesn't she?
She does.
"That what she said jokes" are classless and vulgar
That's what she said. 🤣
