Yorgos is the Kubrick of his generation. The dance scene is one the most hilarious pieces of cinema created

Furious jumping! The film was just shy of 5* for me. It was unique in the way it presented it's score, particularly at the beginning. It took me to a weird, wonderful and you got it right, hilarious adventure. What gave it that extra depth was the cinematography and the acting. Mark Ruffalo played his role perfectly, I was cracking up.

And I was certain that Hollywood was finished, but this movie changed everything! Well, magic things happened when they dived in Lisbon,... they even found a new America!

The movie was fantastic, however, the self-discovery element at its heart feels a bit shallow. The end that the viewer arrives at is that the imperatives of self are the motivators for living. I think there was a missed ending here where Bella's journey could have concluded with some more profound realizations besides "I do what I want to do because it's my body". 98% of the movie is Bella learning what she wants (and it's mostly sex). She says at one point about the need to help the poor, but that is quickly moved on from once she is looking to serve herself. But perhaps that is the argument, that these impulses and desires are largely self-serving. Also, it's odd that a movie entirely centered on a girl becoming a woman, the book was written by a man, the screenplay by a man, and directed by a man. Seems odd. If their point was to present Bella through "the male gaze" then it hit it spot on. If its meant to show female empowerment? Massive failure.

Thumbs down here, for this very limited review, not movie… as all reviews do, just reflects the person writing it, not the actual work of art…and misses a great deal

Thanks for the corrections, much appreciated. Thought I said Robin, slip of the tounge 😂 I will big her up in another review, don't you worry. And yeah, Willem, he'd slap me in the face for saying William TBF 😁

She isn’t Frankenstein, she is the monster, so to speak.

A common mistake. Ask 100 people and 99 will say the name of the monster is Frankenstein.

That’s the whole point of the themes in this film that it is uncomfortable to watch as it makes us think about what’s we are and how we react especially how society expects women to be and behave (especially in relation to our animal instincts and bodily functions). What does it mean to be rational and civilised and who makes the rules?

Great looking, but extremely bizarre and moments of being uncomfortable makes this almost unwatchable. Give me Oppenheimer any day of the week. This was weak drivel.

Fair play, each to their own. Yargos is quite divisive when it comes to his films. A bit like Marmite really

@@thecomplexindividual far from a prude, but something about Bella shoving an 🍎 up her vagina then placing it back on the table during mealtime was completely tasteless. Abhorrently not entertaining.

Fabulous movie, SPOILER ALERT, but the ending made a huge error. Putting the goat's brain in the body of her father/husband (Damien Bonnard) achieved nothing since they were punishing the goat! The father's brain should have been in the goat's body. IMHO a cool ending would have had the farther's body now controlled by the brain of Willem Dafoe and giving the old chap another life.

I though that Bella would but the brain of “god” into her “husbands/fathers” body to keep him existing too!

A pretentious borefest of style over substance. I've connected more with with claymation characters. It looked nice and explored some interesting themes but thought more of itself then was warranted....It reminded me of Wes Anderson, but lacked the charm, wit or heart.

I find it absolutely wonderful that two people can watch the same film, play, read the same book, see the same painting etc. and have a completely opposite reaction to it. I thought this film was brilliantly acted, superbly filmed, was thoroughly thought-provoking and one of the best films of the past year if not decade.

@@gabvideo I agree... I think it's also wonderful that someone on the internet didn't get angry I didn't like a thing they liked :) It's amazing how many people take that personally. There's so much in it - your mood at the time, your overall taste, who you see it with. With Poor Things I think I was disappointed, as there was so much in it to like. On one hand it was masterfully made, but IMO disjointed and lacked heart at it's core - if you compare it to The Budapest Hotel, it's similar in style but that had characters you could identify and empathise with
