  • I finally found this old tape after 26 years! This was a very special visit with The King of The Clarinet, the reclusive genius Artie Shaw, dating back to March 9, 1994. My KPCC FM morning show, "Classic American Music" was one of his favorites I later learned, and he'd tune in every weekday morning from his home in Newbury Park, CA. KPCC had just been granted a power increase and the transmitter tower had been moved from the C Building on the PCC campus to its current home up on Mt. Wilson. Please pardon the noise on the recording, as mentioned, this was culled from an old 26 year-old cassette so there wasn't much I could do to cancel out the high-end hiss. Hey, it gives it that vintage sound right? Enjoy as we listen to his (then) recently re-issued Music Masters recordings of his quintet dating back to the mid 1950s. We cover a lot of ground and I attempt to speak with him intelligently, although he was 80 years old and mentally on fire that morning. But he did not get pissed off at me, I did not bring up the women in his life, or anything else that he might have taken offense to. Mr. Shaw did not suffer fools!

A most complex man a most talented man with endless ideas when improvising. The genius of Artie Shaw was that his creativity level was endless, he could play chorus after chorus and not repeat his phrases always playing something different he was a real super talent indeed. The interviewer did an outstanding job here letting Artie do his thing and i think he caught Artie in a pleasant mood and kept him there.

@@scotnick59 Thank you Kirk! There's a terrific book called 'three chords for beauty's sake' about the life of Artie Shaw and i highly recommend it. Written by Tom Nolan

I was told that he did not suffer fools, or any type of un-prepairedness. He was relaxed and candid after the first 5 minutes, as I was prepared for his visit and did my homework. Thanks for listening and there's more to come!

Mr Johnson, thank you for this amazing interview. I've heard many interviews with Artie shaw and at some point he gets easily irritated. You manage to keep his interest and to avoid talking about the obvious (Begin the Beguine, Ava Gardner etc..). His interview with the late Arnold Dean (host of One Night Stand with the Big Bands WTIC radio) in 1971 was also very good.

Thank you very much for posting this. You did a great job with a potentially difficult subject, and it's fascinating to hear him so relaxed and spontaneous, illustrating the various subjects you mentioned.

Thanks for your comment and for checking this episode out. I was warned by his agent to not ask about "the women" and Frenesi/Begin The Beguine". I stayed clear of that by Mr. Shaw took his own initiative and brought it up anyway. He was an impressive individual and has great energy. He was a regular listener of my morning show and actually asked his PR guy to call me. What an honor. More to come...Margaret Whiting, Steve Allen, Maynard Ferguson, LIttle Jimmy Scott, etc!!

Fantastic artist. He gives fantastic insight, but he said an artist should never take advice in terms of how to do their craft. I can agree unless the two ppl have the same idea in terms of what particular little thing they are striving towards, for instance, how to do a particular brass instrument technique.
