Mark, I greatly appreciate your videos and the insight they give. I’m a new medic living in LA, and yesterday I had my first patient that had a hard, traumatic, drug filled life. Watching these videos has made it much easier for me to ask the right questions and really engage with my patient in regards to his addiction and etc.
Keep up the work you do! Truly inspirational.

Yes, and it works by displacing oxygen. That’s why it makes people silly. It is literally cutting off the air supply to the brain, like the “choking game.” I abused inhalants when I was a kid...all the neighborhood kids did it. Most of us didn’t even think we were doing drugs. It was just common household objects. The familiarity made them seem safe. Everybody knew someone who I ended up with severe brain damage, etc.

I was a new military wife and I had felt so alone, depressed, overwhelmed and I ended up trying this in a company server room bc I was in tech. It took my 4 rehab trips, lost 2 jobs, totaled 3 cars, and was a mess. In 2014 I got clean. But then relapsed two more times between then and 2019. This stuff doesn’t get recognition but you have to get tired of it. The addiction, the sick feeling when you wake, the urinating on yourself, the throwing up of stomach fluid bc you don’t eat bc nothing tastes right. I stole from Walmart at one point. I love that, Mark! “Most people, if they got raped at work, they wouldn’t go back to work.” When people say prostitution is just a job like any other job...not really! Not the way it is, in the streets. In the Nevada brothels, it’s another story. I think one thing people forget is how debased women are by poverty and lack of opportunity. There are people who wade through inches of animal blood and guts at slaughterhouses (it said so in a job posting I read), break their back all day in the fields, inhale toxic fumes, and go blind (welders) for money. As long as there is class inequality (and racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism. etc. are used as a sorting mechanism), there will always be someone to do it. People who have been abused and over-sexualized since childhood will feel it’s familiar, wives and others who are used to using sex as currency or to placate someone (as in an abusive relationship) will be more desensitized to that role. But it’s not necessary. Girls and women see that sex is currency everywhere we look. I don’t know that the answer is to eradicate prostitution, because a woman has a right to decide if she’s gonna eat. Or make a wage that’s unusual for her class background and education. There are women in the business who say they would choose this over anything and I’m happy for them. But, in order for it to be a real choice, we need to let our kids know a woman’s worth as a whole person, not dependent on looks or sexual availability. We also need to level the playing field, as a society. Where I grew up, street workers were the most visible women who dressed up and went to work. That was how you get pretty and go to work like you have a purpose. (Remember I didn’t go to school from 12, but a teacher, actress, or singer were ideas I had, but they didn’t live nearby). To get women off the street or prevent them from turning out, we need more education and opportunities which (of course) can only be real opportunities in a safe home, off the streets. We should have a minimum basic income like Britain and training or higher education for anyone who’s at risk (without stigmatizing). I mean, really, we should have this for all people, including males. Street men aren’t trying to pimp out of pure, blind hatred for women. They need money, too. I appreciate you listening to people about their lives. I wish more policy makers would do that!

I think she would probably like college. She seems like she can think, and learn if she wanted to. I wonder if there is any way she could get go. There are so many things that can happen to us without damaging ourselves on purpose. Maybe she would like modeling for art classes for extra money. I always sort of wonder if people just don't know what is out there, if all of us just wander around, many never finding our true calling. But I think you have to look for it sometimes, it might not just show up for everyone, some but not all.
