The plane looks to be much newer than your estimate......I would estimate at oldest the 80's maybe, but I know more about Record planes tbh. The handle might give you problems, it could break at the base.....the grain is always orientated so it runs horizontally, for strength. Never seen anyone make their own iron and cap iron tho, well done :)

Yes, I had some doubts too because some parts seemed from a more modern plane, but other seemed from an older plane almost like a weird mix of parts. At the end that was just what the test said after checking different freatures of the plane, but it can be easily wrong and I don't have any more knowledge about planes that what I can read on the internet really. The grain was a mistake, I though if it was horizontal it would break in half so I did it with a diagonal grain, but after all I'm happy with it, after planing two tables all by hand from rough lumber and other minor proyects it's still in perfect shape.

Yes, it’s quite a modern version. The dating charts almost always apply only to USA #4 planes. This one was made in England.
But none of that detracts from your amazing skills.

Your choice of grain direction for the tote is a concern . The reason the originals were horizontal grain was to provide longevity against cracking due to constant forward force applied . With vertical grain and a hole drilled the entire length , the integrity is compromised . Just a word . Cheers .

It seems that vertical grain would better withstand the horizontal pressures of planing.

I hadn't thought about it but you are right. I had been trying the sharpness of my knives in that spot for years, I suppose I like to live dangerously xD. Luckily I use kitchen paper to try the sharpnes now.
