    Hi Nigel, I'm so glad that you changed your opinion and decided to monetize your channel. Like I mentioned two weeks ego, it's not a big deal to wait an extra 20 seconds for your outstanding videos ! After 2 weeks there are about 22 thumbs up under my comment, so I think there are a lot of people supporting that idea.
    Just so you know, not every one is supporting it all the way, as a matter of fact, one of the viewers left a very nasty comment under one of my videos, and thumbs down on all of my videos. I erased that comment already.
    I would never imagine that my good intentions and positive advice about you monetizing your channel triggered someone into the hate rampage. I guess, it doesn't take much.
    Thanks again for posting such high quality videos loaded with a great advice and positive energy !

    you're like the bob ross of bonsai trees and should finally monetize your channel. i'm definitely going to start on the hobby since i love gardening especially super hot peppers. collected an oak seedling and some sort of needled evergreen. i have 3 acres of thick woods so i am going to collect a few more (hopfully one magnolia tree and a birch) before it gets too late this year.

    hey nygel.Have you completed your temple ruins for Cambodia project??

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад +7

      I have been thinking about the project a lot! I think I'm going to make the temple out of cut clay bricks from houses. I want a surface that holds water and one that the moss will grow on. The cement wouldn't allow this to happen, at least not for many many years. I will also build less of a temple, but more of a detailed section to keep the overall size down to something more practical. I will be using a tile saw to cut up the bricks into the correct size sections and then doing some carving to detail them. I will probably be using a plate aluminum base. I will be back at it soon.

      Nigel Saunders - all you need to do is mix cement with fine perlite ! Yes, finally you can put the leftovers of the sifted perlite to use. You could probably add some fine turface as well, the only thing is , let it cure for two or three extra days , as turface absorbs water.
      Concrete made with perlite is so lightweight, and durable, that you could probably build a pot with emerging ruins in the middle of the pot.
      Let you imagination go wild Nigel !

    About the video, nice leaves on that norway maple. I dug out a couple of them 3 days ago in my neighbour's hedge. I hope they will survive. Their leaves are about as big as the ones on your maple, although they have a red wine-ish color. Probably one of the Crimson varieties heh.

    Nigel, don't feel bad about monetizing your Chanel! I'm always astounded by how much time and effort must go into these, and it's a really great Chanel, so you should be rewarded for producing great content. In fact there are other ways to help facilitate someone who wants to do this kind of thing with greater commitment. You could start a Patreon account! Thanks so much for all your great videos!!!

  • @infinitec1
    @infinitec1 7 лет назад +1

    I am a new subscriber and don't mind the commercials. You provide great explanations and detail on the art of bonsai.
    Another possible way that you can monetize if needed is through Patreon which allows those who love and want to support your channel to become patrons by pledging a certain amount per video or per month or otherwise. In return, you offer your patrons something a little extra for their patronage. You may want to check it out to see if it might be a fit for you.

I'll come out and say it. I _love_ ads. I watch ads fully sometimes. By the way. After repotting a bonsai or starting a new from a pre-bonsai, we don't add a fertilizer for a few months. Why is this? I thought a slow-release organic fertilizer should not harm the roots? How do you know when you can start adding? Thanks for your advice!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      Mild applications of fertilizer won't hurt the roots and slow release organic fertilizer won't either. I just wait a while and I probably don't need to. I have always waited until I see new growth coming in strongly. I'll have to look more into this subject, thank you for the question!

    Hello Nigel! Many bonsai craftsman use wire to fasten the tree in a container, but in your videos I have never seen you use this method. I would like to hear your opinion on this matter.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад +2

      I prefer to place rocks on the surface of the soil until the roots get established, The rocks help stop surface evaporation and I like to feel how much the tree wiggles in the soil. When the soil surrounds the roots, the tree becomes quite solid in the pot, I like to feel the transition as the soil surrounds the root base. Wire can leave some really ugly wire marks across the surface roots and it can spoil the tree if left on too long. I like to be able to position the tree into the pot and have the freedom to move it around and make changes. Wiring is good if you have a tree that has a large canopy and high winds or problems with animals digging at your trees. Wiring also secures the tree in the pot for wiring.

    when we take a cutting from a old tree is even the rooted cutting of that treethat old or is it young

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад +1

      It depends where the cutting was taken. If it is a branch taken off an old part of the tree, it will be an old cutting, but if it is taken off some of the newer growth it will be only a few years old. You may be able to count the rings on the cutting and find out.

    I am a little late to the program here, but before even starting bonsai i have watched probably 50+ of your videos. They have been instrumental in developing my knowledge before beginning this incredible journey & they help me relax. You've probably saved many trees that may have died under my care had i not had your incredible teaching and perspective on this hobby. Your humility, the magic you have when working your trees, and your philosophy behind what you do is endearing and invaluable. I never comment on any videos, but i feel compelled to say....thank you Nigel!

    Hi, Nigel! I am from Brazil and I used to watch @abcdobonsai but now that I moved to the USA, he told me that I should do Bonsai with the species from here because of the climate. I just bought a Alberta spruce, which is similar to the one from this video, so what is the composition of the soil you used in your tree? Thanks for your channel! I loved it!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 года назад

      Hello Cynthia, most people use pumice or lava rock mixed with composted pine bark chips for coniferous trees. Any of the standard bonsai soil mixes will work well. I would check and see what is available in your area. Thanks and welcome to North America!

Please think also about donations or what ever might be possible. I've bought some Bonsai books, but I learned a lot more by watching your videos. I've been learning a lot from you and have watched many videos and now just realized I haven't been subscribed to you (fixed that). Have wanted a bonsai for some time now and have now started my first at age 22 with a Picea Glauca I picked up for $10 yesterday and have several other plants but not bonsai material. I adopted a brown & dying juniper from a neighbor two years ago with my roommate but we could not save it unfortunately as the owners were gone for almost two weeks without watering. I also have been searching for a yamadori prospect that I hope to nurture if I find the right one and plan on planting a tree in its place. Have a good day

    have you had any problems with bare rotting your junipers? I have a couple that I didn't wash all the nursery soil completely off before putting them into baskets with lava and pine bark. I don't like how wet they stay, but I've been cautioned about bare rooting. What to do, what to do?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      So far so good with Juniper re potting. I have re potted mine twice, bare rooting them both times. I do place it in the greenhouse after to keep it out of the wind and in the higher humidity.
      I cannot think of any reason that bare rooting a Juniper is not a good thing. I would ask people why you shouldn't and see what they say.

    Nigel you are the last youtuber to get angry about commercials. Your videos are way more worth waiting a whole commercial to watch than many other videos that already have commercials :) By the way what is this "KW Bonsai" thing? Is it some kind of bonsai club? If it is could you invite at least one or two of the members to your videos?

    Hi Nigel or anybody reading this. I have some troubles with my japanese maple tree. Last summer it did grow really well, this spring when buds started to swell, I cut off some branches that were too long and gave it a small root pruning and repotted it. Since then, buds didn't grow anymore on the tree and it still has no leafs or active buds. Is this normal or what can I do to make it recover? The tree is still alive because when you cut off a small piece of a branch, it still shows some nice and healthy flush wounds.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  7 лет назад

      Hello Jonas, the roots may have started to grow and possibly dried (or drowned) out and can no longer supply water to the top of the tree. I would suggest placing a clear plastic bag over the top of the tree, with ventilation holes and keep the tree in a bright location, but out of full sun. The humidity should help the roots to grow again and prevent the buds from drying out. You can mist the tree also. Good luck!
