- In a 1998 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, the Bengals pulled off the upset after Neil O'Donnell hit Carl Pickens on the game-winning touchdown pass, which came off of a fake spike. The incredible part? Pickens had no idea what the play was. This is the story behind the craziest fake spike in the history of the NFL

Bengals were 3-13 in 98 but somehow beat the Steelers twice
Steelers had an epic collapse that season. Started 7-4 finished 7-9. Kordell was stinking up the three rivers and crying on the sidelines
Because it's the Steelers lol
Ask Larry Brown how great Neil O'Donnell IS.....
Didn’t Larry Brown coach basketball??
I still think Stafford's was ballsier because if he failed to score, the game was over. If this was incomplete, the bengals could've just kicked a field goal with a halted clock. Great video though
These 1981-2003era uniforms were the best the Bengals ever had.
The ones from 1997-2003 were slightly different than the 1981-1996 unis, since the flying tiger logo was introduced in 1997. I do love the jerseys and pants. Those block numbers need to return
Carl Pickens was an absolute FUGGIN Dawg! It's a shame he wasted his years with mostly bad Bengals teams.
And the Steelers would then spend 25 years getting revenge.
There was another fake spike by the Cincinnati Bengals Where Jeff Blake fake spiked the ball on a very 1st play of the game and through an 80 yd pass to Carl Perkins for for the touchdown.
Bengals need to go back to those unis. Not sure what the garbage they changed to in 2004 is supposed to be.
Coolest looking in the league
Well they have new uniforms now, but I wouldn't call the 2004-2020 uniform "garabage" now the Washington commanders? That's what garbage looks like
I had totally forgotten about this game, I watched it, Carl Pickens was a beast...
And now his son will be a beast for the Steelers this year!!
Dwayne Washington was terrible.
I always remember him as a penalty killer lol.
I was at this game. Everyone was shocked!
O'donnell was a pro bowler in 1992, for cowher's steelers
Bats in the Pelfrey
Oh,so he was faking trying to improve his QB Rating by SPIKING THE BALL ON EVERY DOWN,too bad.
Keep up the content. You will be huge very soon. Great videos as always.
The 1998 Bengals could be the Steelers, so at least they could say that they made things miserable for a division rival.
...I feel like how Pittsburgh does against Cincinnati is usually a good indicator of how their season goes.
That 98 Steelers team was a headache to watch. They would miss the playoffs due to losing to three bad teams..bengals twice and lions. They also blew fourth quarter leads v lions, bengals, Titans. They should have been 10-6 and a wild card. This was the beginning of a three year slide where the Steelers would miss the playoffs. This bengals team would not win another game until playing the Steelers that December with a 2-12 record.
0’Donnell, the guy the Steelers fans hate lol
Why was it a revenge game for odonnell? He threw the super bowl.
The Steelers were still his old team. Andy Dalton started against the Bengals for the Cowboys last season, by comparison to this game Dalton didn't do a whole lot.
That was epic
I remember watching the highlights of this game back when it happened. Wild stuff!
I LOVE Pickens giving the DB that stare. Carl was a bad man!!
The Dan Marino spike play of 1994 is the best all time
This was a great game. I believe that this year the two Steelers games were the only games Cincinnati won that year (yes, making the comment before I watch the video).
You were close.
They also beat Detroit in OT
The AFC Central was weird in the last years before realignment.
In the three years of the Browns being shut down, only 2 of the division's teams were actually based in the Central states - Cincinnati and Tennessee. The other 3 - Baltimore, Jacksonville, and Pittsburgh - were all in East Coast states, and the former two were East Coast cities.
I was there for that one Go Bengals!!!!
Who Dey. Cool vid.
Was that Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy?
Yes
Yes
Yup. Sleeping w b
I have a Colorado jersey he signed back in 2010 at a game in Boulder, autograph is almost completely faded now. His offense as coordinator at CU was awful.
Who should be the head coach of the Bengals, or most of the NFL teams not named the Chiefs. Minus those that have won one Super Bowl and have a job.
My CBS affiliate in Atlanta wgnx 46 when the patriots were winning 34-0 over the chiefs in 1998 they switched us to a more competitive game
Does that channel still exist??
@@chriswoodsports yes it does still exists in Atlanta Georgia cause it was a independent station before channel 5 became a FOX station so then wgnx became a CBS affiliate in 1994
Ben Roethlisberger should be in hall fame.
Really I disagree
Best qb in history.
Don’t pretend you care about my football team around me-unsubbed
two the best bengal players EVER....Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon.. the both just tired of losing, so Mikie boy could play off his IRS bill.
The Bengals couldn't use this as momentum the rest of the way. This win did nothing for them in the long run.
