The F-16 is a runway queen with very demanding needs and requires years of extensive training to master which also makes it an easy target if it gets caught on the ground at any of the few bases in Ukraine that can take it. The Gripen can land on any strip of short straight paved road and be re-armed, fueled and serviced by the equivalent of a French fry cook from McDonald's. That alone makes it a better choice.
We love you Sweden!
Gripen is small size, powerful, it can land on quite narrow and short road with some debrii on. Service needs on specialized mechanic, and about 5 other workers that may be conscripts. Maintenance and refuelling takes 10 min. It's designed for using different roads as airfield, maintained with mobile units.
It's not stealth, doesn't carry huge loads and range is not huge. It has electronic warfare systems, fooling radars, and it's ment to be used in hide and hit tactics, planes spread across country.
It would be good for Ukraine. It can make many missions in couple of hours. It comes with service truck for fuelling and rearming and service.
F16 is more sensitive to runway debris, and can't be used same way as Gripen.
Very encouraging news! But Kyiv, not Kiev.
This is the aircraft i thought would be the best for them to take, learn and adapt faster than the F16s.... It is my understanding that the Gripen is better suited for less than desirable landing locations and deals with that harsh reality vs. the US F16s.

The Gripen is a far better choice for Ukraine as it was specifically designed for that type of warfare enviroment. Its a shame they already committed to the F-16s, Honestly they shoukd take both. They each have strengths made specifically to counter the types aircraft they would be going up against.
Hopefully one day, Sweden will join NATO
