you have to love how star wars keeps making open-faced helmets for pilots IN SPACE, i mean, that thing is just decent enough to keep you from smashing your head, if your canopy cracks or your ship gets disabled, the "eject" lever might as well be replaced with a suicide pill dispenser
Starwars has some of the worst mechanical design in all of scifi, they need to hire more mechanical consultants, especially for their technical books. The whole thing is an absolute mess. And it gets worse when you factor in how their scale of numbers is all wonky too. Like a planet-wide city only having a few billion inhabitants, which would leave stupidly vast amounts of empty buildings.
@@kauske tbf star wars was never meant to be accurate and accuracy isn't required for a series to be enjoyable. If accuracy is what you desire then the space show with space wizards isn't exactly the right place to look lol.
Just about everything in star wars gets half of all science wrong, but its still cool. Rule of cool was and is liberally used while writing star wars.
Try checking out The Expanse. Its A LOT more realistic in every way.
@@oceanbytez847 Number one, this error in scale would be like saying your protagonists are a few millimeters tall, it's nonsense that breaks the plot. If as a writer you can't figure out how to make a detail believable, don't bring it up.
It's just bad writing when you add details that ruin the scale of grandeur in your story. Second, the expanse still isn't realistic, but a long shot.
@@oceanbytez847 You can have fantasy settings that are internally consistent. Why can't you have the same for sci-fantasy?
@@kauske planet wide cities I've read or heard about in star wars have multiple trillions of inhabitants, even city worlds smaller than coruscant had 100 billion or so. There is a problem with scale overall tho, like why are the battles so small scale when the galaxy is so large and has so many inhabitants etc. But I don't know of any large city planets that only had a few billion citizens, I've always heard it was supposed to be in the trillions

@@cooper7838 yeah but u know what I mean
The only way I could see making the ROTS better would be making the tinted visor cover the entire pilots face
Yeah, I was wondering throughout his entire explanation if he would actually mention that. You could easily make the visor cover the whole gap to allow for survival in space; cause otherwise theirs heads' gonna explode
Out of universe, I assume that they wanted to make the pilots look similar to the Original Trilogy's X-wing pilots, since the ARC-170 is the effective predecessor to the X-wing. Strangely enough, it is the Jedi starfighter that was intended to resemble the TIE (primarily with its front face plate).
@@michaelramon2411 Thats because the Jedi Starfighters were made by Sienar Fleet Systems, the guys who made the TIE fighters. The first "TIE Fighter" in the prequel trilogy was Darth Maul's Scimitar which was also designed by SFS
@@CC--hs1ur LOL! That's not how exposition to the void of space works...
The much maligned Leia scene from TLJ is actually much more accurate to reality than "head go boom".
I mean, the pilot would still die anyway without a sealed protection, but from different effects.
@@mugwump7049 ik, but saying that their head would explode is just more dramatic
How does the 'armour' protect the clones from a vacuum when there is no front to the helmet save for the visor
Yes! Maybe a built in inner shield?
Clone were modified so they wouldn’t die because of genetic modifications to their body
Easy, they don't, unless they get rescued immediately.
It doesn’t the pilot had only seconds to live before dying from oxygen starvation.
NASCARboss 48 No clones were like humans, so they need oxygen to live like all other living things. There were no genetic modification made to protect from the clones from the vacuum of space.

I always figured Phase 3 was just a cheaper version of the helmet. In Battlefront 2 (2005), the clone narrator mentions that the Republic began to run out of clones specialized as pilots so they began to train large amounts of average clones as pilots. Since they needed to train a large amount of lower quality pilots they adopted a cheap design for these pilots.
Wouldn't it be more economical to send droid pilots of their own?
@honda driver That doesn't diminish the economics of utilizing droids against droids. Plus the manufacturing of droids can greatly boost the galactic economy which in turn funds the cloning program.
@honda driver Exactly, because men are not machines, henceforth it is better to conserve lives by manufacturing battle droids to fight battle droids.

The change to the first version of Phase 2 resulted in the best-looking and bad-ass armor for pilots in the entire Clone Wars, it's too bad they didn't keep them around for longer.
Also, that scene that you showed at the end is my favorite scene in all of Star Wars the Clone Wars
I like to image they were used as EVA assault armour it seems perfect to use fight in space
Heh, I agree.
SHUT UP
same that scene was so gud especially how the clone pilot actually survived
It also makes sense for LAAT pilots to retain the more heavily armored versions over the ARC-170 flight suit because they are still expected to fly near ground combat and be exposed to small arms fire (as well as potentially being shot down in hostile territory) while the fighter and bomber pilots would mostly be fighting in space where the two biggest threats are their craft exploding and the vacuum of space, neither of which body armor is very useful against.
I’ve been told It gets your head tired really quickly
I dont think its like that in star wars. If youre getting hit in a LAAT its not a bodyshot, its you going down inside a burning metal coffin. Doesnt matter if youre wearing armor of youre not on ground combat.
@@Aaronian99 I was thinking more about small arms - regular infantry blasters when the LAAT is landing or taking off. It's not the biggest risk to the pilot, but it seems like a reasonable possibility. And while the pilots aren't supposed to be in ground combat, if they get shot down and survive, they're definitely expected to grab a gun and contribute. We've seen plenty of people survive hard LAAT landings (though very few pilots, given their lack of plot armor).
I really like and appreciate how you gave both in universe and real life explanations for the inconsistencies, that was a nice touch

Pretty sure the open face helmet could seal itself by dropping the visor down. Because as you said, 1 minute of air and then exposed to open vacuum doesn't make sense. Doesn't matter how much air is flowing if the visor remains open, you still don't get the oxygen. Even after the air runs out he would still have a short while left before carbon dioxide poisoning. Also exposure to the vacuum would kill him before the 1 minute air ran out if it didn't seal.
Seems reasonable to focus on pilot comfort and FoV (and therefore performance) in crafts that allowed it and integrating just an emergency shutter into the helmet.
Another alternative would be blood oxygenators that could keep the pilot alive even in hard vacuum with a breached suit. Giving pilots special modifications/ implants for this doesn´t sound too far off for the Kaminoans, possibly combined with drugs protecting against acceleration trauma.
Yes, you can stretch 1 minute of air/ pure oxygen for quite a while with CO2 scrubbers.
I see what you mean because it makes no sense to even have emergency oxygen. As all it would do is fly out of the helmet and help pressurise space providing the pilot with zero protection from the vacuum of space so it would make a lot of sense to me and you to agree with the emergency shutter interfaced into the helmet.
That's exactly what I thought. Althrough it doesn't seem like it could drop down with the way the visor is shaped. My theory is that they had these magnetic shields(Like the ones in the landing bays of star destroyers) that would turn on to provide protection from the outside vacuum. However this is also quite a far stretch. Maybe they had an oxygen mask that would cover their lower part of the face?
An interesting RL point to draw on is that different aircraft actually often come with or specify their own particular helmets, so they like plug in, fit the cabin, interface with HUDs, etc. Could be why there were variants out there.
Personally, I liked the look of the Phase 1 armour over Phase 2.

Didnt see anything about this but I absolutely love the battlefront 1 og intro
seriously, what a nostalgia hit
To me, it would make sense for certain helmets in certain situations, like a Dropship/Close Air support pilot to wear the full armor because of the shootdown potential, where as a fighter pilot (space) would only really need the minor protection for shock. On top of situation, it would depend on the craft's Life support system and how the armor accommodated it.
Am I right when I say that the fourth version was upgraded by the Empire?
Vojta Janda it probably more like moved to the empire
I like the chestbox of the Phase II Clones which looks like the imperial TIE pilot chestbox, with the "little" excemption that it didn´t provide survival in space longer than one minute.
8:08 Same reason the imperial bridge crew in Rebels all pull their hats down to cover their eyes, despite being in a dimly lit room 😑
I am happy that you mentioned the obvious animation for helmets in the clone wars show
Something I'd also consider is the protection afforded to pilots who may need to exit their craft under duress. If I'm a gunship pilot flying low and fast gun runs over active combat zones, and there's a significant chance that I might be shot down and required to ditch, I'd like full face and body protection so that I might more easily survive the scenic hike back to the airfield.
Should have been equipped with space capable suits and jet packs to be able to survive in space if they are ejected
It was inconsistent because the Senate was not a pilot.
You mean because palpatine? Because I AM THE SENATE!
I am the pilot.
You are my favorite star wars channel on yt. You actually put effort in and you are really relaxing to listen to since you know how to for example lower your voice when needed and dont talk in a very monotenous way. Also the topics are way less clickbaity.
Had a stroke trying to read the title “Why was Clone Pilot armour was so Inconsistent?”
another comment about the title, we get it.
Can you do other special forces groups? Like the rebels spec-ops marines, Nimbus commando or mistryl shadow guard
Another reason might be that clone pilots might prefer up-armored variants for CAS or short missions. It would make sense for CAS because the Z95 we almost exclusively see in atmosphere alongside the LAAT, the fact that there is more armor could be attributed to the fact if the pilot was shot down they would have some form of protection whilst on the ground. Meanwhile the Episode III model is better for long range or prolonged space battles. The open faced design might also have some sort of force field that closes the gap or the visor comes down to create a seal (I mean, why else would they have a chest mounted life support system?)
The real title: "Why was Clone Plot Armour so Inconsistent?"
My favorite design is the first phase 2 helmet. I always thought the open helmets didn’t make sense for the clones. And the phase one always looked uncomfortable because of the tubes entering through the back of the helmet instead of he front.
The original armor was used for ground assault where they would need the protection once they land. While the comfy armor was for space combat or for pilots of drop ships who was not going to be involved in the ground combat.
In the Films it seemed like it went From good to bad in my opinion, From a design perspective perhaps they wanted to go for a more Suicide approach in ROTS with the open Face Masks 🤷♂️
Open face is far less realistic
Corrupted Archangel You could always go into further detail than just a few words, You might’ve actually gotten the point across...The 3rd phase is more related to a Tie Fighter Pilot, And the phase 2 Design is most Related to how Our Real Military’s Air Force looks-Just with the edition of protective armor.
Vic Viquor You don’t have to tell me *Twice* I agree.
Vic Viquor haha I guess you’re right then a few extra words does help clear things up.
I like to think that the third variant automatically seals itself with a hidden retractable section that goes between the visor and the in an event of an emergency. Kinda like how pilots today sometimes would just have their mask hanging on the side of their flight helmet if they’re not in high enough altitude and not doing anything strenuous.
Had a stroke reading that title
ODST Brooks yes

3:49 that “ah shit” face lol.
For the phase 2 open face helmet, they should install a drop-down full face sealed visor so that they have good visibility and a way to survive longer in vacuum
Surprised the writers never just figured to do a normal looking pilot helmet: skull cap, big visor, O2 mask. Hell, even a helmet based off of U-2, SR-71, or X-15 could've been practical looking and still "Spacey".
I love how you mention the animators, great touch.
there is also the issue of logistics that also helps explains discrepancies in armor. With an army that big and spread out it takes some serious production and logistics to support it and honestly front line troops are much more important than pilots
Those pics of the two pilots from o.g battlefront 2 (2005) brought tears
I think the clone pilot helmet, should have been a combination between: the first phase back head, the third one's visor, among with the mouth and chin of the second one.
Kinda surprised they didn't use a transparasteel face plate similar to what the clone cadets used with the added life support of course so if they get sucked out there still protected with the advantage of having full line of sight
I choose to believe at least those clone open face helmets had something like "airbag" which automatically activated in vacuum and sealed every part of the helmet. Otherwise i don't see reason for helmets to be as heavy duty from the front as they are.
you forgot something about the 4th set, they could open up like the third, and has the ability to open/close the mask, so open when flying, closed when in space.
The full face helmet Phase 2 pilot armor is my favorite because it looks badass. The 4th variant (6:19) also looks good. Shame we couldn't see it with Clone Wars HD rendering.
6:45
Can we all appreciate that amazing clip from clone wars
6:43 The action scene with this music in the background made me crack up
I wonder why the first phase two armor resembles speeder trooper armor from the Empire’s stormtroopers, I wonder if there’s any significance there, and if not, I wonder why the speeder troopers’ armor needs that extra room.
6:41 This Mace Windu is dope
I would go with a combination of the third and fourth variants of clone fighter helmets to maintain a greater field of view with the addition of a life support system that would help in the vacuum of space.
why is your channel so beautiful 😭😤 i love all your channels
Honestly I don’t understand why TCW went with that interim phase 2 design when they could have just as easily used the the micro series version based on the full face ARC-170 pilot, which they completely ignored. Perhaps that was being saved for the V-wings which is the correct helmet as far as I’m aware. Great video btw, this is among my favourite subjects
I like the ARC pilot helmets as a strange hybrid of the Rebel and Imperial helmets. Though the only way ARC pilot helmets make sense is if there's an optional faceplate attachment that snaps into place to seal it in case of breach or ejection. Not a terrible idea when it's designed for more comfort with a backup re-breather/oxygen supply. Some concept art seems to indicate this functionality, where it's basically an ARC-170 helmet with the faceplate. Usually designated V-Wing pilots. If V-Wings had no onboard life support it's likely helmets issued for those pilots were manufactured with a sealed faceplate. You can then see how there's a divergence in helmets afterwards between Rebels and the Empire, but it's left up in the air as to what came first, the Rebel helmet or the Imperial helmet. I tend to think the Imperial helmet came first, then Rebels stole that and modified it for use in their fighters that provided comfy life support. Odd as it seems, there's a possibility the open faced "Rebel" helmet was originally a variant of the Imperial helmet. Mind you I'm just speculating over what we see in the movies or in preproduction concepts instead of EU stuff.
I imagine the standard Rebel pilot helmet also had a backup rebreather attachment, similar to the oxygen masks they had on the Millennium Falcon. Rebel helmets had much greater freedom of movement compared to the ARC-170 helmets with the huge unnecessary bottom half. Originally, the Rebel pilot helmets were designed with an oxygen/rebreather attachment, and there's a photo or two of this helmet they developed for the original movie before cutting it down to a simple chin strap. The whole notion of a shield bubble generated by their helmets is silly to me. Evidence points otherwise.
I wish concept artists who designed all the clone pilot helmets, any of the clone armor designs really, would provide some insights into their design choices. Like what did they have in mind when it came to aspects of the armor that have an unspecified functionality. Typically all the behind the scenes stuff is pretty shallow and doesn't really get into specifics. Like for instance, how do all the belt boxes on a Clonetrooper function? There's a lot you can infer and guess about, especially if you look into the development of tech in historical warfare, or even the aesthetics.
The phase 2 looks the coolest by far, but phase 3 is probably more practical for peripheral vision and comfort
They thought “hey our clone pilots die a lot. Must be because of the armor. Let’s change it!”
That intro brought me so many battlefront memories.
Love that music track at the end that exists solely to get you to 10 minutes
I agree. For example, what are the correct pilots and colors for a Fox’s Coruscant LAAT Gunship?
Fav part is intro great job on the battlefront 1 original loading in intro :D nostalgia 100
Honestly, a self contained pressure suit equipped with independent life support systems makes perfect sense regardless of the vessel being piloted. After all, a starfighter with full life support ceases to support life if its cockpit/canopy is breached whilst in extreme altitude, hostile atmospheres, or space. It leaves no margin for error. That's why I always took issue with the open faced flight helmets used by rebel pilots.
Could you talk about the different phases of clone fighters please. I’m kind of confused with the when and why there was different fighters the clones used
i like how u recreated the starwars battlefront 1 opening
Phase two mark one with a phase 2 mark 3 flightsuit would have been smartest. It would recycle oxygen, be comfortable, armoured (to a degree) and wouldn’t expose you to the vacuum.
Man that map sequence at the start is so nostalgic for me.

My favorite version was phase 2 version 1. I just like how it looks like an Air Force helmet
ARF vs. AT-RT driver vs. clone scout armour, please.
phase 2 was my favorite for all the clones in my opinion.
For some reason i just LOVE the thumbnail
Before watching the video:
I think the armours cater to the role of the pilot:
Phase 1 was just the default armour, and they just rolled with it.
Phase 2 armour: Those fighter pilots needed the armour to sustain the G-Force of dogfighting, as we've seen they were primarily worn by combat pilots. They were upgraded to cater to the previous problems.
The one without a front: The pilots catered to comfort and maneuverability, thus raising their performance. They have essential armour was just to protect their vitals to protect the pilot from small arms, so they don't die if the shot gets through. This new uniform probably saves on cost and the unnecessary helmet blocked too much field of vision.
Didn't think about the animation reason for the armor types. Rather I was thinking "The toy lines need bolstering".
Love phase 2 pilot armor looks totally sick
There is in fact another variant not mentioned in this video: a Phase 1 ARC-170 pilot variant.
This clone pilot variant appears briefly during the Kamino episodes of TCW. It resembles Imperial AT-AT driver armour, albeit with some Phase 1 features. I advise you go look it up, it’s really dope!
You mean the guy whose Armor Fives stole when he was trying to uncover the Order 66 Conspiracy? I think that was just Odd Ball with normal Phase II Armor

I legitimately like the second pilot helmet. Would be a cooler helmet than what pilots use today.
I'm rather sure the first set of clone armor used in phase 2 (the one that looks a lot like an ARF trooper) was also used in Phase 1 by Z-95 and V-19 pilots.
So much nostalgic feels with that intro 😭
Despite the complications mentioned, I still prefer the phase 2-version 1 clone pilot armor cuz the helmet design. As for the subject around 8:03 I felt like the tv show didn’t have rights to use the revenge of the sith clone pilot designs as to what I thought for the clone airborne troopers for the 212th and the scout troopers of the 41st etc, that’s what I thought instead of just budget to animate those clone designs...
Well it would be a good idea for pilots to use the original phase II version if they were in heavy combat. Also long distance missions would be good to have the original version in case the cockpit is breached.
