    you have to love how star wars keeps making open-faced helmets for pilots IN SPACE, i mean, that thing is just decent enough to keep you from smashing your head, if your canopy cracks or your ship gets disabled, the "eject" lever might as well be replaced with a suicide pill dispenser

      Starwars has some of the worst mechanical design in all of scifi, they need to hire more mechanical consultants, especially for their technical books. The whole thing is an absolute mess. And it gets worse when you factor in how their scale of numbers is all wonky too. Like a planet-wide city only having a few billion inhabitants, which would leave stupidly vast amounts of empty buildings.

    I always figured Phase 3 was just a cheaper version of the helmet. In Battlefront 2 (2005), the clone narrator mentions that the Republic began to run out of clones specialized as pilots so they began to train large amounts of average clones as pilots. Since they needed to train a large amount of lower quality pilots they adopted a cheap design for these pilots.

    It also makes sense for LAAT pilots to retain the more heavily armored versions over the ARC-170 flight suit because they are still expected to fly near ground combat and be exposed to small arms fire (as well as potentially being shot down in hostile territory) while the fighter and bomber pilots would mostly be fighting in space where the two biggest threats are their craft exploding and the vacuum of space, neither of which body armor is very useful against.

      @michaelramon2411 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Aaronian99 I was thinking more about small arms - regular infantry blasters when the LAAT is landing or taking off. It's not the biggest risk to the pilot, but it seems like a reasonable possibility. And while the pilots aren't supposed to be in ground combat, if they get shot down and survive, they're definitely expected to grab a gun and contribute. We've seen plenty of people survive hard LAAT landings (though very few pilots, given their lack of plot armor).

    Pretty sure the open face helmet could seal itself by dropping the visor down. Because as you said, 1 minute of air and then exposed to open vacuum doesn't make sense. Doesn't matter how much air is flowing if the visor remains open, you still don't get the oxygen. Even after the air runs out he would still have a short while left before carbon dioxide poisoning. Also exposure to the vacuum would kill him before the 1 minute air ran out if it didn't seal.

    • @wulferikgebhardt5312
      @wulferikgebhardt5312 5 лет назад +4

      Seems reasonable to focus on pilot comfort and FoV (and therefore performance) in crafts that allowed it and integrating just an emergency shutter into the helmet.
      Another alternative would be blood oxygenators that could keep the pilot alive even in hard vacuum with a breached suit. Giving pilots special modifications/ implants for this doesn´t sound too far off for the Kaminoans, possibly combined with drugs protecting against acceleration trauma.
      Yes, you can stretch 1 minute of air/ pure oxygen for quite a while with CO2 scrubbers.

    • @KxEwl
      @KxEwl 4 года назад +4

      I see what you mean because it makes no sense to even have emergency oxygen. As all it would do is fly out of the helmet and help pressurise space providing the pilot with zero protection from the vacuum of space so it would make a lot of sense to me and you to agree with the emergency shutter interfaced into the helmet.

    • @SomeoneYouHate
      @SomeoneYouHate Год назад +1

      That's exactly what I thought. Althrough it doesn't seem like it could drop down with the way the visor is shaped. My theory is that they had these magnetic shields(Like the ones in the landing bays of star destroyers) that would turn on to provide protection from the outside vacuum. However this is also quite a far stretch. Maybe they had an oxygen mask that would cover their lower part of the face?

    Another reason might be that clone pilots might prefer up-armored variants for CAS or short missions. It would make sense for CAS because the Z95 we almost exclusively see in atmosphere alongside the LAAT, the fact that there is more armor could be attributed to the fact if the pilot was shot down they would have some form of protection whilst on the ground. Meanwhile the Episode III model is better for long range or prolonged space battles. The open faced design might also have some sort of force field that closes the gap or the visor comes down to create a seal (I mean, why else would they have a chest mounted life support system?)

    Surprised the writers never just figured to do a normal looking pilot helmet: skull cap, big visor, O2 mask. Hell, even a helmet based off of U-2, SR-71, or X-15 could've been practical looking and still "Spacey".

    there is also the issue of logistics that also helps explains discrepancies in armor. With an army that big and spread out it takes some serious production and logistics to support it and honestly front line troops are much more important than pilots

    Kinda surprised they didn't use a transparasteel face plate similar to what the clone cadets used with the added life support of course so if they get sucked out there still protected with the advantage of having full line of sight

    I choose to believe at least those clone open face helmets had something like "airbag" which automatically activated in vacuum and sealed every part of the helmet. Otherwise i don't see reason for helmets to be as heavy duty from the front as they are.

    Honestly I don’t understand why TCW went with that interim phase 2 design when they could have just as easily used the the micro series version based on the full face ARC-170 pilot, which they completely ignored. Perhaps that was being saved for the V-wings which is the correct helmet as far as I’m aware. Great video btw, this is among my favourite subjects

  • @GiantBoarMonster

    I like the ARC pilot helmets as a strange hybrid of the Rebel and Imperial helmets. Though the only way ARC pilot helmets make sense is if there's an optional faceplate attachment that snaps into place to seal it in case of breach or ejection. Not a terrible idea when it's designed for more comfort with a backup re-breather/oxygen supply. Some concept art seems to indicate this functionality, where it's basically an ARC-170 helmet with the faceplate. Usually designated V-Wing pilots. If V-Wings had no onboard life support it's likely helmets issued for those pilots were manufactured with a sealed faceplate. You can then see how there's a divergence in helmets afterwards between Rebels and the Empire, but it's left up in the air as to what came first, the Rebel helmet or the Imperial helmet. I tend to think the Imperial helmet came first, then Rebels stole that and modified it for use in their fighters that provided comfy life support. Odd as it seems, there's a possibility the open faced "Rebel" helmet was originally a variant of the Imperial helmet. Mind you I'm just speculating over what we see in the movies or in preproduction concepts instead of EU stuff.
    I imagine the standard Rebel pilot helmet also had a backup rebreather attachment, similar to the oxygen masks they had on the Millennium Falcon. Rebel helmets had much greater freedom of movement compared to the ARC-170 helmets with the huge unnecessary bottom half. Originally, the Rebel pilot helmets were designed with an oxygen/rebreather attachment, and there's a photo or two of this helmet they developed for the original movie before cutting it down to a simple chin strap. The whole notion of a shield bubble generated by their helmets is silly to me. Evidence points otherwise.
    I wish concept artists who designed all the clone pilot helmets, any of the clone armor designs really, would provide some insights into their design choices. Like what did they have in mind when it came to aspects of the armor that have an unspecified functionality. Typically all the behind the scenes stuff is pretty shallow and doesn't really get into specifics. Like for instance, how do all the belt boxes on a Clonetrooper function? There's a lot you can infer and guess about, especially if you look into the development of tech in historical warfare, or even the aesthetics.

    Honestly, a self contained pressure suit equipped with independent life support systems makes perfect sense regardless of the vessel being piloted. After all, a starfighter with full life support ceases to support life if its cockpit/canopy is breached whilst in extreme altitude, hostile atmospheres, or space. It leaves no margin for error. That's why I always took issue with the open faced flight helmets used by rebel pilots.

    Before watching the video:
    I think the armours cater to the role of the pilot:
    Phase 1 was just the default armour, and they just rolled with it.
    Phase 2 armour: Those fighter pilots needed the armour to sustain the G-Force of dogfighting, as we've seen they were primarily worn by combat pilots. They were upgraded to cater to the previous problems.
    The one without a front: The pilots catered to comfort and maneuverability, thus raising their performance. They have essential armour was just to protect their vitals to protect the pilot from small arms, so they don't die if the shot gets through. This new uniform probably saves on cost and the unnecessary helmet blocked too much field of vision.

    Despite the complications mentioned, I still prefer the phase 2-version 1 clone pilot armor cuz the helmet design. As for the subject around 8:03 I felt like the tv show didn’t have rights to use the revenge of the sith clone pilot designs as to what I thought for the clone airborne troopers for the 212th and the scout troopers of the 41st etc, that’s what I thought instead of just budget to animate those clone designs...
