      Outsiders try to turn it into a party, and inevitably, it will be request night.
      ......."uhhhhh could you play some Madonna? Metallica? Jay Z? Taylor Swift?"
      "Where's the beer"
      "You guys are great"
      5 beers later.....
      "You suck!"
      "Freebird"

      @digiscream 8 лет назад +51

      A Catricala - To be fair, he's her age (I'm 39, she's 22...don't judge...). Good guitarist, but a bit of a baby - had a habit of crying when told he was doing something wrong.

    • @digiscream
      @digiscream 8 лет назад +51

      Christian McGuire - oi, that hurts ;) There's a difference, though - Geoff Tate ended up fired and the guitarist stayed. I gave our guitarist a choice - either dating my daughter or being in the band. He left the band (after I made it abundantly clear - several times - that he wasn't going to get everything he wanted). I'd told him a couple of months before that this would happen (when they first started chatting), so it's not like it would've come as a surprise. They both acted like I was the devil when I followed through, naturally.

    We were rehearsing with a drummer for a gig, first time playing with that dude. He's a christian, but my hometown there are so few drum players that he was the only one available for that gig. The first day was cool. the guy adapted to the songs real quickly (we guided him with a lot of 'plum, plash, tum'). Next day the guy appears with his gf. She sat on the floor real quiet, so no big deal. In the middle of a break, she starts asking the bass player (he doesn't believe in church, bu he claims he believes in god) about his religion. I think she did that because of his tattoos. The rehearsal studio was at his place, he tries to be polite and reject the conversation in a polite way. She insist talking about 'if you believe in god you should go to church' crap and he starts getting upset (obviously). The singer realizes the situation and he says something like 'ok, I'm uncomfortable. I'm leaving.', he's the bass player brother from another mother, so the bass player walks behind him. The drummer and the girl stayed behind with me. After a minute of awkward silence, they leave too. I walk out behind them and I see the bass player and the singer still talking outside the house, they walk in when they see the couple leaving. We discussed the situation and it was no big deal for us. The next day, the singer (he was the contact with the drummer) texts us a message from the drummer: 'Hey guys. I don't think i can play with you at the gig. Yesterday during rehearsal I felt the devil in the room.' My reply to my friends was: "Yes the devil was there... And she was wearing a purple shirt'.

    GREAT Video! As the lead singer of my band, I have had to deal with some of my ex girlfriends getting attention hungry and jealous. There is a reason they are now exes! "Ohh I love musicians" followed up quickly by "why don't you skip rehearsal and cancel the gig, I miss you"...blah blah blah! No need for that. I did however get lucky enough in the end though. My now wife to be is fully supportive, doesn't get jealous and even though she wishes she could come to more shows, she selflessly stays home with our two 3 year olds. Guys, if you have a jealous girlfriend kick her to the curb. A good one will come along who will support you and your music fully. And when she does, its well worth the wait!

  • @AdamRainStopper

    Wow. I never knew how lucky I was. I mean, Stacy doesn't keep her mouth shut about "the reverb on that vocal" but she knows what she's talking about, so it's never caused any problems with other band members, but if I am offered a "last minute" (in punk rock, it is *ALWAYS* last minute) show, she's the one offering me a ride, rationalizing how this could be the last time I get to play before the apocalypse, or telling me how much I'll regret it if I turn it down. She's also my camera operator, CD-seller, and occasionally first-responder (again, it's punk rock). I have *never* heard even the slightest bit of disapproval from her about anything music related, and it's not just because she is being nice, she doesn't hold shit back. I've talked to other guys who have to negotiate with their girlfriend just to get her to show up at one show.....Sorry, you don't come see me play at least *SOME* of the time, you don't really love me. I know that kinda makes ME the overbearing jerk not unlike the one you talk about in this video, but anyone who knows me well enough to know that she wants to be in a relationship with me knows how important it is to me. Dating me and not going to shows is like dating Tommy Chong and not liking pot. . . it's just not gonna work out.

    I used to play in a widely known punk rock band in Miami in the early 90's. We had a nice following and a AR guy from Def American wanting to sign us, that all went against the wall because the bassist's girlfriend broke up with him and started dating the singer. Things would be fine until Yoko (our name for her) showed up and then these two clowns would start fighting, and this skank wasn't even worth it since she has a reputation with the other bands. Then the bassist quits and the guitarist brings in a 17 year old kid who's ten years younger than us, because of that, we couldn't play any clubs. What ever shows we played were like mini fiascos since it's time to hit the stage and our singer is nowhere in sight. Wait a minute, they're both in the men's room since Yoko is giving him a BJ and they decide to screw at the same time we start playing.
    The record deal falls through, the kid quits because "he doesn't like playing with older guys", and the band breaks up.

    I like their music very much but i never gave a judgement to what they where practiceing. I'm not in the band so I keep my mouth shut. When they have got a concert, I try to help them with their band gear and bring the stuff on the Stage. Then I watch their shows and after the show i try to help at their Merch stand selling CD's or Shirts.

    I can tell you right now that a jealous lover can not only ruin a band but ruin the musician in the relationship. It is my dream to become the lead singer in my own band but unfortunately I have an Ex who destroyed my self confidence so much that I got kicked off of my music corse a year early because I let his mental destruction of me bleed into my stage confidence. he would constantly cheat on me and then tell me about it in sickening detail before bragging to me about how much bigger the other girls breasts were than mine or how much skinner they were than me but then he'd get in a strop when I so much as shook someone else's hand. He even went as far as to pin me against a wall, get in my face and say "no one is allowed to touch you but me." It got so bad that even the music tutors intervened but by that point my confidence was so fucked that I would cry before every performance saying that I was a worthless shit who was just gonna go out there and fuck the whole performance up for the rest of my class band and when I did eventually get up on stage I couldn't interact with the audience and all I could do was stare at my feet, my tutors would end up having to separate me from the rest of the class and play instruments for me because I had crawled so far into my shell that if there was anyone else in the class band who could sing I'd make them sing and I'd take backing vocals and even when they separated me and played for me they'd constantly tell me off for trying to adapt my vocals to be hidden behind the instruments and my tutors really gave it everything they could to fix my confidence because they saw how much passion I have for music but in the end they just didn't know how else to help me. It broke my heart that I had to leave the music corse and I even remember sobbing and begging them not to kick me off because that music corse gave me something to cling to but I understand that due to how badly I let my relationship fuck me up there was nothing more they could do for me, my father was going to help me find a band because my dad is an ex musician himself but after I got kicked off the corse he refused to help me because the whole situation seemed to prove to him that I wasn't ready for a band yet. So beware of how fucked up jealous relationships make the musician themselves because it could very well set your band back to square one if your lead singer is so mentally fucked from a relationship that she can't even go on stage without crying and thinking she's a fuck up.

      I know this is unsolocited, so feel free to completely disregard. Not only my above comment, but reading your initial post, but if you're still in that "place" with everything you went through... lean into it. Make it a spectacle, like a character you're playing. Sort of like Maria Brink or Gwen Stefani.
      Going off on a limb, I'd wager you probably have a LOT of material and songs from having gone through that and while I HATE when people say "Everything happens for a reason", what I will say is to give it reason. Don't let it have happened to you in vain. What you have probably written about are things a lot of people can relate to... dont keep that from them. Allow others to not only feel what you feel, but to also process what they feel, through your music.

And if you stored gear there during that fateful moment, can you actually get it back legally if they refuse to let you in? • @ISpillSprite
    @ISpillSprite 8 лет назад +3

    Ever since I was 14 and in my first band there has always been one golden rule throughout all the bands. Keep relationships and band relationships separate. You can have them turn up at a gig but if they're at practice they'll distract you. If they're in the studio they'll distract you. If they're at the sound check (yes I've heard of this happening) THEY DISTRACT YOU! Having a relationship and being in a band is fine but you need to make them know what exactly the boundaries are. And don't be that guy who cancels on everyone at band practice last minute because "his girlfriend needed him" fuck that shit. Act like a real musician or you won't get a career in the industry full time touring if you're at her beckoned call 24/7. I'm not saying the band should always come before your partner because that's not right. I'm just saying the band shouldn't constantly suffer because of YOUR relationship issues.

    I had this happen to me about 2 years ago!
    I dated a girl and she "loved music and bands" just not mine. Of course I was just being a good boyfriend and just wanted her to have a little fun. One day she thought she had the right to have a say in what we wear and how we have our instruments. I like having my guitar very low, she told me I need to have the guitar all the way up on my chest, that pissed me off. She told my drummer he needs to have his hands all the way up the sicks, which pissed him off. The next day both him and I told her "This is not your band, you have no say with happens to the way we play" yeah she was pissed but she had to hear it. She just wanted her to look like her favorite shitty NY band, I refused cause I refuse to look and sound generic as fuck. So everyone when Glenn says "Don't have boyfriends/girlfriends in the practice room" TAKE THE ADVICE!!!! It will save the arguing and headache. Oh and may I mention this. She also got pissed that I made my best friend the manager and here is why I made him the manager. He is in college for business and management, he's also not gonna fuck me over. Her line to me was "But I know music" when she really doesn't, which I told her.
    So anyone that is starting a band seriously don't let your other half in. I know you don't want to be rude but they can survive a few hours or a without you, it's a day not 3 years. As Glenn said you are working, you don't have your half at your job so don't have them in the practice room.

    I am very lucky. The band I am in, and the last band as well, rehearse and record at my home studio. My wife NEVER comes into the studio except to say hi and brings drinks to the band members. She sells merchandise at gigs and otherwise, doesn't get involved. She has come into the studio otherwise very few times, … and always just if something sounded REALLY good and she wanted to compliment us. Couldn't ask for a more supportive wife. I am truly blessed!!

    Both myself and my gf are vocalists in different bands and it's always great to have eachother in practices, gigs even in recording sessions since we both know when we should open our mouth and when not to... it's always helpful to have free hands going out to get water for the band, help the drummer when the hardware gets lose, fix their sound, etc... even when her drummer couldn't make it to the soundcheck once i took a bus for 2 hours to be there, memorized one of their drum lines in the bus and did the drummer's soundcheck as if it's my band and i'll be drumming that night (i play drums aswell)... well she gets a little bit jealous sometimes since she's a female whether in my gigs or even when people come to talk to me when i'm not playing lol but she never says that during the gig which is so much appreciated coz all i need to do then is concentrate since i have so much effort to do on stage, u can say all 9 slipknot members in 1 person... so yea, you don't see that much but i guess i'm lucky we have eachother's backs even on this :)
    it's all about respect, support and that pride u feel when seeing ur significant other having so much passion for the same thing that kept you still fighting for the past 8 years... even if one was not a musician as well they SHOULD appreciate what their significant other's passion is !!!
    what do you say Glen ?

    I see a lot of this happen, but during a tour to Germany we needed an extra singer. My partner was more than happy to come and she understood every aspect of touring without me having to even tell her. If anything it can help sometimes. Seeing someone being professional about your passion (and now theirs) is a great experience.
    The problem with bands that suffer from this is being immature. If it is a job then be professional and make sure anyone you bring understands this.

    Hey man! My lead singer/rhythm guitarist's mom runs our facebook page, and IMO does not do a great job.
    I am an admin on the page, but I feel like I'm better equipped to be making a professional-looking image for our group (I've had experience doing it in the past, and have talked to friends who agreed with me that the band I managed AND played bass for had a much more professional looking page).
    The system of her running most of the posts on the page seems pretty ensconced, and I'm not really sure how to go about taking more control of the page, especially since I am not a founding member of the band (I joined as a bassist after the band had been around for a while and through a couple bassists.)
    If you see this, thanks!

      Here's my unsolicited advice. It comes down to one of three options.
      a) Honest communication
      b) Trickery
      c) Suck it up and deal with it.
      The first option is obviously the best, IMO. If you can find a way to get your guitarist on your side, he can hopefully get his mom to butt out. If your band mates are smart, they'll agree that it doesn't look very professional for someone's mommy running their "business."
      Alternately, you could hijack the page. This is bound to step on people's toes though. Especially if it catches them by surprise.
      Finally, you could just let it go and not let yourself be bothered with it. If you can't do anything about it because people will get their feewings hurt, just brush it off. No sense letting things bother you if there's nothing you can do about it.
      Bonus option! Rage quit and fire the drummer for no reason.

    • @HeyZeus096
      @HeyZeus096 7 лет назад +5

      Wound up quitting the band because I was going back to school and planning on living about 5 hrs away from them, and man... The more I think of it the gladder I'm not involved with that group anymore lmao.
      Good music, but it was a bunch of dudes stuck in a small town and not really willing to change to get out of there.
      Also the whole "momager" thing.

    • @HeroSword_P
      @HeroSword_P 7 лет назад +5

      Even though you're already out of the band, still want to chime in. The thing you said about "not being a founding member" doesn't mean jack shit. If you join the band and I'm assuming you handle just as much band duties as the other members, your opinion and stance is absolutely equal. As a matter of fact, it doesn't fucking matter who started the band because everyone is now putting in the work to make the band successful.
      Also, now that I think about it, your opinion mattered more because you seemed to be the only who realized that someone's mother running the band page was a stupid idea.

    Wise words - GF at practice... Think Spinal Tap... On topic - but a different tack - some of the band mates you meet in your 20's are your mates for life - I'm still gigging with the same lead guitarist after 34 years (I'm vocals and rhythm guitar) - we've seen each other through a many failed relationships over the years and he even gave me a home for 18 months when my now ex wife made me homeless. Band mates are closer than brothers and can see each other through it all - respect the boundaries and always put them first...

    The band/personal relationships extreme tension thing worked for Fleetwood Mac and their album 'Rumors', though that would have to be a unique exception rather than any sort of rule. This hit so close to home. Friend is in a band where two of the performers were dating, and have since broken up. Except it is even worse, because they are codependent, and keep getting back together, and breaking up again. Which means the band is constantly breaking up and getting back together again. It's the most depressing thing I've ever seen.

    Years too late but my band had our guitarist and singer start dating and hiding it from everyone and then we found it. Long story short it blew up 9 months later and the other 3 of us basically continued on without them. God it was so toxic. She (singer) stopped working on anything for the band, and we couldn’t say a thing without him getting defensive ab it too. We were all really good friends and now some of us still haven’t talked since (especially since guitar flaked on attending drummers wedding). So much fucking drama im so glad I’m past that shit.

    Haha two of my bandmates were dating, and they broke up, yet my band is still intact and functional. However though, it was more of a mutual "we'll be happier as friends" breakup where there actually wasn't any bitterness. But still, I guess that we're an anomaly considering the fact that Glenn worked with countless bands and can't recall any cases where this happened.
