I think that was technically a Family Guy episode but I agree it was a swing and a miss, it just felt wrong to hear Family Guy's shock humour coming out of Simpsons characters' mouths

No. The Musk episode/Lisa Goes Gaga is when the Simpsons inevitably died. The Principal episode was just them fiddling around.
