I Got Touched at the Cinema
Добавлен 1 янв 2023
Hi, I'm Ben Sherlock and I got touched at the cinema - not by a clown or a minister, but by the magic of film. Come along on a journey with me and I'll see if I can touch you too. New videos released every Friday.
Anora and the Slice-of-Life Cinema of Sean Baker
I recently watched Sean Baker's Anora and absolutely loved it, and it was a timely reminder that Baker is one of the finest filmmakers working today. The best genre description you can ascribe to Baker's filmography is "slice-of-life." He's all about giving you an honest look into people's lives: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

This has been a pretty nightmarish month. I had a broken tooth, a horrific ear infection, and my house fell apart so I had to move back in with my parents while it was being rebuilt. But on the bright side, I watched some great films and TV shows! The Rocky Horror Picture Show vs. Phantom of the Paradise
Просмотров 36621 день назад
On Halloween 1974, 20th Century Fox released Phantom of the Paradise, a campy musical comedy lampooning the tropes and conventions of the horror genre. Less than a year later, the same studio released The Rocky Horror Picture Show, another campy musical comedy lampooning the tropes and conventions of the horror genre. But which campy mid-'70s horror musical is the better movie of the two? I GOT...

Where Have All the Good Comedies Gone?
Просмотров 747Месяц назад
Everyone loves a good comedy - everyone loves to laugh - so why does the comedy film genre seem to be as dead as Del Griffith's wife? There used to be a handful of new comedy blockbusters every year that everyone HAD to watch and everyone did watch: Anchorman, Superbad, The Hangover, Bridesmaids. But that seems to be happening less and less these days. I feel like I've seen this talking point c...
Joker: Folie à Deux Review - The Sequel You F**king Deserve
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Месяц назад
I was surprised by how much I liked Joker: Folie à Deux. I wasn't a huge fan of the first film, and based on the mixed reviews for the sequel, I was expecting another disappointment. But I actually really enjoyed this movie. I don't think people who loved the first film will enjoy this one all that much, but as someone who found the first film to be derivative and superficial, I found the seque...

Megalopolis Review: What the Hell Did I Just Watch?

I really wanted to like Megalopolis. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the greatest living filmmakers and it was really badass that he defied the studio system and used his own money to bring his ambitious passion project to life. But Megalopolis just really isn't good. I GOT TOUCHED AT THE CINEMA Written, Narrated, and Edited by Ben Sherlock Logo designed by Danielle Greaves MUSIC: “Ordelia” by A...
The Darjeeling Limited: Wes Anderson's Underrated Gem
Просмотров 436Месяц назад
For years, it's been common to name The Darjeeling Limited as Wes Anderson's worst movie, but I think that reputation is completely undeserved, and the criticisms are unfair. I've always loved The Darjeeling Limited. It's a great movie - as funny, as profound, and as moving as any of Anderson's best work - and in this video, I'll try to prove that. Inside Out 2 Review: Pixar's Back, Baby!
I just rewatched the OG quadrilogy and I have to say, unpopular hot take but I genuinely enjoyed Alien Resurrection and unironically prefer it over *either* cuts of Alien 3. Even with the Assembly Cut, the third movie was plodding and dull, with no sense of fun or likeable characters and the third act was a giant mess that never seems to end. And what they do to Newt and Hicks at the start is tasteless and unforgiveable, whilst retroactively undermining the second movie!! 4 at least tried different things, had some smart and memorable scenes and interesting character dynamics. It's kind of like a proto-Firefly vibe with the mismatched space pirates etc. Also, I personally liked the strange human emotions of the hybrid at the end, and the look of confusion and betrayal as its own mother destroys him. Also, it was mercifully short and not stretched out.
I still think 1999 was the peak of human society to be honest, or culture at least. The 90s were the last decade if you think about distinct fashion trends, music styles, film & TV aesthetics etc.
Have you seen a boxing channel on RUclips called hatman strikes back? He also randomly does a review of the matrix specifically the religious symbolism :)
Incredible video mate! I love when someone reframes art in a new way for me, it means I get to go back and enjoy it again with a whole new perspective.
Thanks buddy, I'm glad you liked it! I love that too, I had that feeling when I watched the longer version of The Shining and realised it's all about alcoholism
Deserve more views. Great title great thumbnail, well written well recorded.. I’ve ran several channels and I’d love to know how you’re doing your tags and such because I feel you need only a small wave and your subs will start flooding in. Best of luck I’m sure ittl take off
Damn even the descriptions are class.. why are you at 2k subs this is 100k plus work
You're very kind! I'm hoping all those extra subs will start rolling in soon 🤞 as for tags I don't really know what I'm doing, I just input random keywords until the character limit runs out. I'd love some advice on tags if you have any!
7:02 aaaand there's your dislike
Loved it. I agree, the best UK comedy of all time. :)
1. Skyfall 2. The Living Daylights 3. Goldfinger 4. Dr No 5. Casino Royale or Goldeneye
Anyone who doesn’t have The Living Daylights in their top 5 is absolutely mad. It has everything a good Bond movie should have
No it isn't, this is just revisionist bullshit.
Damn, sounds like a bad month, bro! Keep well. *The Batman* - Overly long, with a massive anti-climax given the movie sets Batman up to be the World's Greatest Detective but cant solve a basic riddle that the audience is screaming through the screen at him and then the friggin Penguin of all people has to tell him the answer before the arch nemesis just hands himself in without Bats having to outsmart him in any way... Such a letdown. (Also Pattinson looks so scrawny that I think even I could take him down so that didn't help either!!) *Modern Family* - My all time favourite sitcom Not a single episode made that doesn't elicit at least one belly laugh from me even in later seasons, and they all really do feel like a proper family. *Joker: Folie à Deux* - Glad you liked it, but yh, one of the most laborious slogs of recent years imo. *Boy Kills World* - Kind of like Kick-Ass meets John Wick, but something was missing from this, wasn't as fun or as humorous as the premise and script seemed to promise. Cant put my finger on it but was sadly quite forgettable. *Young Frankenstein* - We all watched this as a family last Xmas. Defo a little dated now. There's about 3 really funny sequences but they are spaced between half hours of flat tediousness. *Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa* - NOW THIS is one that still holds up! No matter how many times I watch this I am howling all the way through! Not really much of a Partridge fan but this movie was so smart and witty; endlessly quotable, and the losing-his-trousers-in-the-window sequence almost made me have a hernia! xD
1984 Dune still better... New Dune is colorless and the acting is like a Lumber Yard.
Who came here through the baby raindeer rabbit hole?
Hope you’re feeling better.
You're very kind! I am feeling much better now thanks!
"as wet as an eagle" and "swan and ped0" are my fave classics
Such an epic show, incredibly funny. Mark, Jez, Superhanz, Big Suze, Sophie, Johnson… so good.
Name 1 good "the rock" film ??? I can name 10 shit 1's..
I love this film ❤
Me too!
I haven’t even watched this video yet. But it is absolutely wrong. Peep show is awesome, but we have such a rich comedic history that is just cannot get into that upper echelon. IMO that is, I’m not one of those “I HAVE THE OBJECTIVE TRUTH” people.
This is my favourite movie. My second favourite is The Cable Guy.
Cable Guy is so good!
@igottouchedatthecinema a man of culture.
Is no one going to talk about how the music in this show was produced by Daniel Lopatin... the guy who literally INVENTED VAPORWAVE...
I'm pretty clueless when it comes to music, is vaporwave a genre?
I like both but for different reasons.
Me too!
I'll never forgive orange if they've wiped the twins
They turned funf zwei years ago so what? Pair of eighters I reckon
I saw Phantom yesterday in the theatre for the first time. Can't believe I slept on it for so long!
I've never seen it in a cinema! It must've been great
@@igottouchedatthecinema It was amazing. A friend hired a cinema for their birthday to watch it.
Boogie Nights is my favorite. But I could see arguments for TWBB, The Master, and Phantom Thread as being his best.
I think Boogie Nights is definitely the most entertaining
Do we have to choose...? I refuse, love them both...
You don't have to choose! There's nothing wrong with liking both (I like both too!), I just thought it would be fun to compare the two
@@igottouchedatthecinema I figured as much. I was lucky enough to live near an old movie theatre that showed amazing double and triple features..Phantom and RHPS were a common pairing, sometimes with Tommy and Rock and Rule or Heavy Metal. One of the COOLEST combos was Litzomania with Cabaret....Damn I miss places like that..
That sounds amazing! I've never actually seen a double or triple feature but they all sound like great pairings. I loved Tommy!
The Rock USED to try, but now n days he just plays himself, Cena while he does try, he only has a a couple of specific niches that he can pull of successfully. Batista is alot more well rounded of actor. I'd much rather see a movie with Batista in it, than a movie with either of the former two in it.
10/22/2024. [Zissou] I want this name for a Scrabble Board. Many points.
That would be a really good Scrabble answer but aren't proper nouns not allowed in Scrabble?
Sorry, not sorry, but I always find Mimic underrated. I know I'd rather watch that than various others on this list. And I've seen all but one of them.
That's fair! I don't dislike Mimic, I really enjoy the director's cut, I just liked all his other films more
Nice video.
Thanks!
You are again ignoring and not fixing your mistakes. Disappointing.
You'd need to point out the "mistakes" first surely? What are you referring to?
@@SarcasticPlotRecaps 2 weeks ago he posted another article on Screenrant about Jack. He claimed that in the original script Jack was the pilot. That's just wrong and I have no idea where he got that idea from. If he had read the script, he wouldn't have written that. I sent him an email 11 days ago. No response. No correction.
@@SarcasticPlotRecaps See... he's even posting here in the comments and yet he doesn't respond. I don't get it.
I've changed the article (I read somewhere Jack was a pilot in the original script but I guess that was wrong). Do you give other writers this much grief or just me?
@@igottouchedatthecinema I'm not giving you grief. I was pointing out that you made a mistake. You are getting paid for this work and then you don't even bother to read the script. That's what's so disappointing. Why not put in the effort? Do something new.
thank you for this video
You're very welcome!
1. Pan's Labyrinth 2. Pinocchio 3. Hellboy II: The Golden Army 4. Pacific Rim 5. The Devil's Backbone 6. The Shape Of Water 7. Cronos 8. Hellboy 9. Nightmare Alley 10. Crimson Peak 11. Mimic 12. Blade II
I see we agree on the top 2! I think I need to watch Pacific Rim again, I haven't seen it in a few years
I thought they should’ve brought Bob in when Steve left
That would've been much better than just turning Andy into Michael 2.0
Best comedy I’ve seen that went under the radar was Brian And Charles. The problem is it’s achingly British, and it made me cry (you cannot use Where Does The Time Go and expect me to stay dry eyed).
I'll have to check it out! I do love that guy from After Life
7:21 Don’t Worry Darling is the Red Dwarf episode Better Than Life with tradwives. The Dwarf version is shorter and funnier.
Brilliant show and episode!
@@movieclipsvideos1781 it’s not Backwards, but it’s up there
I've only seen a few episodes of Red Dwarf, I really need to finish it!
nice work, man
Thank you!
Thanks for the movie recommendation. Some of these films I am hearing about for the first time
I hope you enjoy them!
I clicked on this half expecting another "ITs BeCaUsE NoBODy CaN TaKE A jOKe anYMoRe" type of video but was delighted by this analysis. I definitely agree that streaming is killing the comedy genre, among others (I personally think horror is suffering also, just not as drastically as comedy) Your recommendations were awesome, and I'm excited that there were some I've seen and plenty I haven't that are definitely going on the list. Great video <3
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. Hopefully you'll enjoy the recommendations too! And I agree, the horror genre is suffering too. Horror films translate well internationally so they're still doing better at the box office than comedies but streaming has definitely allowed horror directors to get lazier (pretty much every original horror film on Netflix is awful)
My wife tried watching Quiz Lady and I caught a little bit of it, but we both agreed it felt cringe and the jokes seemed forced. Can confirm that the Mitchell's vs the machines is a great family watch
To each their own! I do agree Quiz Lady takes a little while to find its feet but once they hit the road I think it picks up
I loved the old slapstick movies. Mel Brooks in particular. Somehow though there's something about modern film production that makes slapstick feel weird. Hard to put into words.
I weirdly agree...
I think it might be because with CGI and modern stunts they can make everything look too perfect, whereas the slapstick in Mel Brooks films or the old Peter Sellers Pink Panthers had rougher messier stunt work with all the imperfections left in
It's about feminization. From an evolutionary perspective, very different selective pressures apply to men and women. Women in general are not funny / do not have much of a sense of humor. Men on the other hand cannot stand yap yap talking, interpersonal drama, gossip, soap opera stuff. It's because men have to prove their intelligence by making women laugh to be sexually selected. Whereas, men are not gonna care if a woman is funny or not. If she's hot that's all. Comedy = male, so that is disappearing. Drama / self-insert / soap opera = female, so there is too much of that now. In fact, all the previously male things (Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, etc.) have been feminized / self-inserted / soap-opera-fied. This applies more generally to pretty much everything. For example, the rock bands (male) completely disappeared from the the music charts. Now it's all garbage rap + Taylor Swift style pop shit. Long time ago, news used to be news. Just objective reporting of facts. Now turn on the news, it's all drama, chitchat, opinion, gossip, and it's mostly women.
I can tell this is going to be a quickly growing channel so I'm getting in on the ground floor baby! WOOOO!
Welcome to the channel! I hope you're right
Caan clearly superior
This is why I watch pirated movies because it helped me revisit some movies I missed out on due to bad marketing. How did I miss They Came Together?
They Came Together was so good! I also missed it when it came out and stumbled across it on Netflix a couple of years later. It should've been a much bigger hit, it was a perfect spoof of romcom clichés
@@igottouchedatthecinema There are so many critic-panned films I missed out on. Need to finish There’s Something About Mary at some point.
@@eatatjoes6751 That's another great one! It's like a raunchy grossout Farrelly brothers subversion of the romcom that's also just as sweet and heartwarming as a typical romcom
Only one minute in and I'm already sad
Don't be sad! Have faith that the genre will one day make a comeback!
A friend of my commented that Frasier would work on stage, so the format being the same as other sitcoms of the time, didn't really define it in the same way shows that couldn't be done on stage would work.
That's a good litmus test for how smart a sitcom is! I could absolutely see Frasier (the original series) being done on stage as a Neil Simon type play but I couldn't imagine anyone going to a theatre to watch The Big Bang Theory or the Frasier reboot
Cobweb was so bad. It infuriated me into writing a 10 page rant of all the plot holes and insulting "twists" but that I couldnt be bothered to record in the end lol
It felt like a horror film made by people who have never seen a horror film just going off the tropes they've seen in parodies
Bro did they really just r*pe the Joker out of him at the end?? wtf even is this movie
Joaquin cannot sing at all, Gaga looked bored out of her mind, there was no chemistry, the courtroom scenes were like an all out parody, the end was a total anti climax and an insult to those who enjoyed the first one, and dont get me started on the punishingly painful pacing and flatly staged musical segments that just go on and on and ooooon.... All this could've been fixed the director swallowed his pride and test screened it ffs.
