They will ramp production as needed now that they issues sorted out. Also keep in mind it's a 10 year delivery period for UA's order/options. They are already ramping back up production.
The logical decision by United. You get a solid aircraft that employees are already trained on, and ordering so many of them gives you a bulk discount.

Great that United is putting that money into the US economy. $43bn is not pocket change, after all. I hope they go ahead with the A350 order, too.
Don't confuse list prices with what was actually agreed to. An order of this size with either Boeing or Airbus typically is 40-50% of list prices. No airline actually pays list, and the bigger the order the more discount. Costs about $110-180 million to build a 787 so Boeing will still make money at the discounted prices. The list prices are $248-$338 million so there's plenty of room for negation on large orders.

Just because of the 787-8 I think as the 777, A330, and. 767 retired from service that small, medium, and low cost airlines will be likely to order more 787 because they don’t need the larger 777 or A350 and the 787 is really hot right now with passengers. The status symbol has changed from the largest planes running at a loss to being more carbon friendly and on board service and seating. For long haul aircraft probably not for a few years. They are already replacing there 777s with 787s but their fleet ages aren't that bad in even then with the 777s only being 18 years old. Some of United fleet are at around 23 years. They are doing a replacement I think of the old A319's with some newer types as those have an average age of 18 years as well at the same time.
