How to Update the BIOS in Your Dell Laptop

- In this video, I show you how to update the BIOS in your Dell laptop. With recent vulnerabilities such as Meltdown and Spectre, and even more recent ones found in Intel's Management Engine (ME) and Active Management Technology (AMT), keeping your BIOS updated can help protect against attacks. I apply the BIOS update to a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (Model 5570), but the procedure should be the same for all recent Dell laptops.

Wow, exceptionally good quality audio/voice-over narration. Good job! :)
Thank you - appreciate it!
This was amazing. Short, easy to follow, and spot on. Made the upgrade easy-peasy. Thanks so much. (ALSO, thanks for the heads up on turning off Bitlocker before the upgrade!!!)
Excellent instructions and very easy to understand. Thank you for your time to do this!
You're welcome, and thank you for taking the time to post your feedback 🙏.

You're welcome, and thank you 🙏
thanks, bro I've been looking for ways to do this for my dell but I've just been seeing tutorials on Asus computers anyway thanks.
Glad you found my video helpful. Thanks.
Great explanations. Well done sir. If you update the bios, it is possible to revert it back if some wrong occur?
Thank you 🙏. If you want to revert the BIOS after you upgrade it, you can often downgrade them to a previous version. However, I have seen some cases where that was not possible.
When updating the BIOS, if something goes wrong *during* the update (i.e., the power goes out and you have no battery), then it will be difficult to revert - there are videos that explain how to fix a corrupt BIOS but they require downloading the USB-bootable version of the BIOS update.
Always you rock bro 😊 bro can you please make video on dell laptop screen update like 1366*768 to 1920*1080 p screens so that we can get an idea about screen changing thank you
Thanks man. The Dell inspiron 5570 is actually 1080p, but if I ever get a chance to swap out a screen on a different laptop, i will definitely make a video about it.
access random sure brother thanq very much ❤️
I did what I did as you said. I did not I did not get that screen where it updates bios.
when I checked system information it is in the same old version.
so I directly updated it in the dell bios flash update by pressing the f 12 key when booting
AND IT WORKED
I recommend when you have this same problem like mine
I HAVE THE SAME LAPTOP WITH A SUPER OLD BIOS WHICH IS FROM 2015

Thanks for the detailed writeup. I'll probably need to update this video to include other ways of flashing the BIOS.

Does anyone have problem updating bios of Dell Vostro 5459? Currently I still use version 1.1.0.
What happens if we try to update bios from another laptop.
my laptop is freezing while updating...what to do???
My xps 8940's latest bios update shows "urgent" in dell.com, if desktop is working fine should I update the bios when it shows urgent?
Sorry for the late reply - for some reason RUclips blocked your comment and I just saw it in the blocked comments section. Yes, in general, an urgent update is typically for security reasons, so it's a good idea to update it.
Hi brother i use dell litude 5289 and i downlod the bios sitting but when i install this when the computer restrat thier is write that the ware update is field so what is the reson
It looks like the newest version is 1.19.1 on Dell's website for the 5289. From what version are you upgrading? If it is a much older version, you may want to contact Dell to see if you need any intermediate versions that you need to apply. Also - make sure that Bitlocker is suspended (if you use Bitlocker).
I updated my bois hope that TPM 2.0 will show but the bois stall the same why?
Can we update from the stock version to the latest without having any problems? Or we should make one by one all the BIOS updates until we reach the desired update?
You may want to contact Dell support directly and explain your situation. In the past, I've run into both situations on other computers, where I needed to incrementally apply the updates (more rare) and where I could jump from an old one to the most recent (much more common).
my battery isnt charging so I hope this might help but since it isnt charging, I dont hve the 10 percent bttery. would it be ok to proceed if I am sure that there would be no power interruption in my area?
Do you have a UPS battery backup unit by any chance? To be safe, I would plug it into a UPS if at all possible...
Yes I certainly enjoyed. LOL
my laptop wont go from bios 1.8.1 to 1.9.1 (Dell xps 9570). I have been searching on the dell website and nothing works. can download the file but when I click it like you show in this video it says do you want this program to make changes etc. when I click yes it just goes away and nothing happens. do you have any clue as to what could be the problem? thanks beforehand

hello, i want to update bios in dell inspiron 1545 i can lose my data without backup. please help me !
It looks like this is an older laptop (released in 2009) so the procedure may not be exactly the same as the video. I would follow the instructions on Dell's support site and if needed, you can always ask for help through chat on their site.
i have dell inspiron 7370 it got updated and the system model changed to inspirn 7373,
so how do i change its model back to 7370??
I'm not sure why the model number would be re-assigned, but it looks like Dell combines the 7370/7570/7373/7573 into one BIOS update executable. You may want to contact Dell support directly to see if you can downgrade your BIOS, or whether the model number re-assignment has any negative effects.
Dell Inspiron 3558. My battery is not charging. It's 0%. May I still update the bios or is too risky?
I think that would be too risky. However, what you could do is plug the laptop into a UPS so it can provide battery backup (just in case).
Dell Laptop vostro 1015 Black
Screen after bios updated with 1015_A06.EXE. Please give solution.
I tried to google your model and your problem but I'm afraid I wasn't able to find a solution. You may want to contact Dell directly and explain the steps you took when you encountered the black screen.
Can you tell me, why did you uninstall support assist?? Just curious
I thought SupportAssist was a bit intrusive in trying to maintain the laptop. I also wanted to remove certain Dell components and other programs that weren't essential. With that said, SupportAssist can be helpful if you ever want to factory restore your hard drive to its original condition.
I am using e6540 and i have bios version A19, i downloaded the urgent A27 and run my pc restart but currently showing A19.
I dont know why......
When I looked at the history of the BIOS updates for the e6540, I noticed there were four version since A19. You may want to contact Dell support directly to explain your situation and see if they recommend going incrementally (version-to-version-to-version) instead of jumping to A27.
How long should the whole bios update process take?
Because the reason why I'm updating is because my laptop shuts down after 30 minutes of use and so it shouldn't happen during the process.
I sped up the time for the update itself by five times, so according to the clock it should take around 1 minute 5 seconds. There's time before and after to reboot, but it shouldn't last 30 minutes even in the worst case scenario.
I'm using dell Inspiron 3542 and its bios is at A11 version. Current version is A16 can i download A19 straight away??
And I'm also using linux how would that work?
With a linux system, you'll need to create a bootable USB disk and run the executable from a DOS prompt; there are instructions for the Inspiron 3542 on Dell's site. For the jump between versions, you may want to contact Dell support directly as I've had to update the BIOS incrementally on some systems.
I have Dell XPS 15 L502X, unfortunately back lit keyboard lights off permanently after updating bios. Any help?, Thanks in advance 😊.
I'm afraid I don't have experience with the Dell XPS models. You may want to contact Dell support directly and inform them of the specific BIOS versions you upgraded from and to.
Buddy i got win 7 32 bit and in intel website operating system there's just win 8 and 10 64 bit can i choose win 8 64 bit?
That's a good question - did it originally come with Windows 7? You may want to contact Dell support to find out what to do with your specific model.
Sir will this method work in Dell Inspiron N5110 the older bios version released in 2011 (i didn't updated since i bought)
It does look like they released a new version just this month, but the executable doesn't look like the same as the ones for recent models. I'm not sure how the upgrade will proceed after it is finished but the process should be similar.
I have the same model Sir can you please tell me if it work ?
When I tried from the dell support software the black screen with dell logo said that bios update failed due to downgrade , PL HELP
What version of the BIOS do you currently have, and what version are you trying to install? The message implies that the new BIOS is older than the one you currently have, which may not be possible...
He estado realizando la actualización del firmware pero llegó al 100% y no pasa de ahí, me.puedes ayudar a que se debe por.favor??? Gracias
Can you please tell me what Dell laptop you have, and what BIOS versions you were going from and to? For unexpected issues like this, you may want to contact Dell directly with your specific model.
I recently got a dell inspiron 13, it came with this software that notifies me of any dell firmware updates. I chose everything, disabled windows encryption, no bitlocker on my laptop. It restarted, said successful, rebooting now etc.
When I got back to the application and click check for update, it doesn’t show anything anymore because they were all applied..except for the BIOS update. I tried one more time, restarted, checked again for update and that same update pops up, why??
Is the Dell software that you're using called SupportAssist? When I go to Dell's forums, I'm seeing a lot of problems with that software, specifically with the BIOS update. I would contact Dell to see if they've fixed it (I personally have uninstalled SupportAssist and update the BIOS manually, like in the video).
access random alright thanks 👍👍
I have a Dell g7 7588, but my laptop randomly freezes. Would it be too risky to update bios?
That's a very good question. It's hard to say whether your problems are hardware-related or software (Windows) related. If the laptop is freezing because of a hardware problem, there is a real chance that a BIOS update may fail. However, if it's Windows that's causing the problem, there is an alternative way to install the BIOS from DOS (See the "Installation Instructions" section after click on "View full driver details" on the driver/BIOS page). I'd reach out to Dell to see what they recommend.
When I install for example the BIOS A14 version it shows me an error: You must have A10 installed
Which Dell model do you have? I was using the Inspiron 5570 and went from BIOS version 1.1.3 to 1.1.6.
@@accessrandom well thx for asking but nvm i was thinking if theres a possibility to increase the vram due to i have 64 mb and wanted to increase to 256 at least because idc losing ram
Hello sir , I am from Pakistan and when I open my website it is written as "( Dell Pakistan offical site ) so I can 't find an option of "Driver and Downloads" my system model is N5110 and version of BIOS on it is A08 but not found in the dell website

It looks like A03 is the latest version on the US version of Dell's website. You may want to contact Dell directly in your country to see how and why you have A08 on your machine (there may be variations between the same model numbers in different countries).
SIR I HAVE LATITUDE E6520, WHEN I BIOS UPDATE, ERROR youmust upgrade to a08 before flashing to this bios , SHOW, PLSOLVE
It sounds like you may have an old version of the BIOS - the current version on Dell's website is A22. If you click on the Older Version link in the description of the A22 BIOS update, you can download the A08 BIOS.
hello, when trying to update my my bios on the dell vosotro 420 dekstop, the bios fail says " not downloaded correctly" when trying to open it, what can i do?
I researched this on google and learned that the most recent BIOS, version 1.3.0, is fairly old (dated 2011). Is that the version you are trying to install?
I also found out that the executable will not run on Windows 7 64-bit since the Vostro 420 doesn't support it. If that is the case for you, you'll need to create a boot disk and run it from a DOS prompt. You may want to contact Dell support for more details.

I never update bios before... My xps 9530 have bios A04 version. And now available A11 version (urgent) @DELL WEBSITE... Is it safe to jump update from A04 to A11? Or I have to update by stages from A05,, A06... A11? Thanx before
That's a good question - normally you can jump versions to the latest, but there has been at least one time where I had to go incrementally. You may want to contact Dell directly to see what they suggest for your model and BIOS version.
I tried downloading 2020 version of bios but when i execute it..it says that its an older version help pls
What version of the BIOS do you currently have, and what version are you upgrading to? Also - what is the model of your Dell laptop?
I had some 2013 bios
With older laptops, you may not see the exact same type of update program like you see in the video (but it should still run from Windows). In the worst case scenario, you might need to boot to another medium (like CD or USB disk), but again, it will depend on what Acer provides as an installer.
I have an inspiron 7559 that shuts down every 30 mins on the clock, I tried everything except the bios update, my question is: how long will the update take, is it more than 30 mins?
Looking back at the timestamps of my raw footage, it took 1 minute 47 seconds from the time I clicked OK (at the 4:03 mark in the video) to the time the Windows login screen came back up (at the 4:31 mark).
@@accessrandom I did it, yeah it took a few minutes. Thanks alot. It did't fix my problem tho, but atleast I tried. Cool video!
how long does the update take?
I wen back to my raw footage and saw that from the time it rebooted (at the 4:10 mark) to the screen where it finishes (4:26), it took 1 minute and 10 seconds.
I've tried updating bios but it won't update on my laptop even after letting it run
Which Dell laptop are you updating, and which BIOS version are you upgrading to and from? If the gap between versions is too large, I know that in the past I've had to incrementally update the versions.

Can I upgrade bios with Dell SupportAssist?
Yes you can. The procedure in the video is more universal (for those who may not have, or have uninstalled, SupportAssist).
What is the use of BIOS Update???
Can anyone explain
The BIOS/UEFI is low-level software that loads before Windows starts, typically provided by the manufacturer of the computer/laptop/motherboard. Updates to the BIOS can include support for new hardware (like newer CPUs that may have been released since the BIOS was released), vulnerability fixes for Intel/AMD chips, and/or general bug fixes.
I brought a laptop back in 2015, stopped using it because I lost the charger but never cared enough to get a new one.
...
6 years later here I am struggling to get it back up and running, when I turn it on it goes to “Dell Support Assist” where it’s supposedly scanning for issues. I left it there to “scan for issues” and nothing is happening. I spent hours looking for a resolution. I got the laptop when I was young so I never really updated it, would this solve my issue? (If so how would I proceed with this)
It sounds like you are unable to boot to Windows at all. I'm not sure if a BIOS update will solve your problem, but there is a way to update it using a USB flash drive. Unfortunately, I don't have a video for that (I'll need to consider updating this video in the future to include it), but you should be able to find instructions by googling "update dell bios using USB".
@@accessrandom So I would need another computer for this?
@@20_rounds94 Yes - for downloading the BIOS and creating the BIOS flash, you would need another computer.
If double clicking the executable file doesn't do anything?...how to proceed?
What version of the BIOS are you upgrading from/to and what is the model of your Dell laptop? Was this an official installer from their site?
What should I do if I got stuck at 100%?
I've googled your situation and there doesn't appear to be a consensus on a solution (but it sounds like you have no choice but to restart). You may want to contact Dell Support directly with details about your model and BIOS.

@@accessrandom Thanks, I switched on laptop, it started and bios didn't updated.
@@garimajoshi1757 Ok, thanks for the update. Did Dell give you any advice on how to proceed? If there was a large gap in version (e.g., 1 -> 4), my thought was that you could try incrementally applying the updates (1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4).

Why does this is the only urgent update that scares me on downloading is it really important or necessary to back up your files? because I need to update my laptop BIOS urgent but I don't have anywhere to back up my important files etc. 😭
Most of the time, a BIOS update will not have any problems but it is a risky operation (especially if there are power problems or anything that causes the laptop to shut down during the update). I do recommend that you back up your files but that is a risk that only you can judge for yourself...
@@accessrandom I've done it completely it was successful and good thing I don't have any power problems on my laptop.
Hi, umm can I upgrade the cpu of this laptop?

@@accessrandom well ye, I've looked it up and found that the CPU and GPU are soldered into the motherboard so it's not upgradable or replaceable.
Bummer. Thanks for the update.
But how to flash the BIOS via Boot? How to flash the bios without being using windows...!?
The reason why I'm asking because currently I'm running Linux and I don't want to install Windows to do the procedure :(
It's been a while since I booted to a removable disk to run a BIOS update exe. I'm not sure if the newer BIOS updates provide an image or an exe, but I'll definitely need to revisit that as a subject in a future video.

Is it a fairly recent model? It looks like there have been two versions of the BIOS, both in 2021.
Ok I saw only moderate updates no urgent update
What you don’t backup I’m using 8gb USB
The backup is just to minimize the risk of losing any critical data in case the BIOS upgrade goes wrong for any reason.
But I have windows 8.1
Did you lost your data after upgrading?
No, all of my data was intact after the BIOS update.
I can't even use my laptop, it's not working, it says that I neen to update my harddrive urgently, but i can't do anything!!

My laptop battery health is 0% and DELL does not let me update the BIOS. This is stupid.
SupportAssist is the worst installation manager. Dell update is convenient, but poorly served in my country
Agreed - that's the first thing I uninstalled when I bought the laptop :)
i just can't even run downloaded update files from the dell website, they just don't start..nothing happens which is so f'ing annoying. I can't update bios cus of this
Which Dell model do you have? You may want to contact Dell about it - I know that sometimes, on older computers especially, they have a process for running the executable from either a bootable USB disk or a CD - I think it may be Windows PE or maybe even DOS?
@@accessrandom it is Inspiron 7567 gaming. i have tried to contact Dell support but their services seem like dead, it always says no available agent to serve or something like that.
Hmm, that's a pretty recent laptop. I did some research and there were a bunch of problems with the 1.2.0 through 1.5.3 versions of the BIOS. Right now, they have a 1.10 on their website (it appears they pulled down those earlier versions). Since it's such a model-specific problem, I'd try Dell's forums to see if they have any suggestions. I'm thinking there may be sequence of version updates you need to follow (but that's just my gut instinct).
@@accessrandom I have 1.8.1 atm and tried to install 1.9 before 1.10 but exe is not working, installing is not starting... Anyway thank you so much for your time and help..
Dose bios update reset the bios password ?? Please reply
That's a good question - after googling this, I found out that some Dells will ask you for the password before you update. Others have used the BIOS.exe utility to feed the password to the updater. I'll need to defer to my viewers/subscribers who may have more experience with this - anyone?
