Thanks for taking the time to check this out! When you can, please check out Phil in Genesis performing In the Cage / Afterglow Live in Birmingham 1984 IMO, the best performance you will ever see. What these 5 musical geniuses can do is just astonishing 🎉
Phil Collins is a rabbit hole you absolutely need to dive into. A true legend of music that is much more than In the Air Tonight. Brand X was a jazz fusion group he was involved with in between Genesis albums in the late 70's and early 80's. He collaborated with so many artists, he released a 4 disc set called Plays Well With Others. This man was and is the soundtrack of my life and I'm 56. Don't know where to start whith recommendations, depends on your mood. His playlist has it all! Hell, Bone Thugs and Harmony included him on an album, collaborating on Home. Sampling his hit Take me Home and they made him an honorary member, naming him Crhome Bone. The hits and substantial additions to music is endless
He's such a musical and songwriting genius plus singer! It broke my heart that I'll health circumvented him before old age did😭 He still had so much more in him! But on the bright side he and his second wife got back together and he finally has what he always wanted, but was too career driven to have, and that's Family! He's finally been forced to slow down and enjoy the fruits of his labor and know his legacy will live on in his body of work! ❤❤❤❤
One of the greatest songwriters in music, no bout a doubt it my friend's. 😎 R.I.P. Mr. Kris Kristofferson ♾️ +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friends+ 🤘😜🤘
I've seen an interview where he says people come up to him all the time and tell him what it's about and he says "I promise you that you're wrong because, I don't even know what it's about." He was going through a divorce but it isn't about divorce. It's just the anger that came out of him and into the song.
I agree. I saw him open up several of his solo concerts with that great tune. With both Phil and Chester Thompson just thwacking the hell out of their drums for about 5 minutes, no other music, until Phil slowly gets up and sings as angry as it gets. YOU FEEL HIS RAGE AND ANGER IN THAT TUNE EVEN MORE.
You REALLY need to listen to the Simon Collins song The Big Bang starring Phil Collins on drums. Actually, both Simon and Phil playing drums on that track and it's very energetic! 🔥🔥🔥
I saw him on i believe it was David Letterman where he discussed the meaning behind the song. It was about divorce and that he wrote it when there was a huge storm outside that matched his mood. All the thunder and lightning was reminiscent of the famous drum solo. Im paraphrasing of course.
Something Happened On The Way To Heaven, is so underrated. Phil Collins is so good. Leadbelly is the Original person who sang Black Betty. Also you need to watch K.D Lang Constant Craving.
One day i was visiting an alligator park where throughout the park were speakers playing a low bongo type tune and during that visit the question arose...if i was an alligator and had to live in a park where a song was played repeatedly what song would i choose that i could listen to repeatedly and possibly never tire of hearing it and so this very song by Phil was my choice and so ive always thought it as my overall pick of decades of music ive listened to. Though i live so many its one that idk just does something..it just stirs musically as I've always found pleasure in hearing it everytime it plays.😊js
Hi Mr P! @blackpegasus i really enjoy your reaction videos and love that you go in completely blind and sometimes google facts as you go! I know you like surprises and discovering tracts that others have sampled! I highly recommend you listen to “Dusty Springfield- Son of a preacher man” it’s a banging tune but when i hear it i can’t resist singing a line from a future sample! When you hear it you’ll know what i mean, straight away i’m sure! Love to you all, from a very wet and cold (Nottingham) UK xx
He didnt say it was about divorce...he just said he was angry, going through a divorce etc. Sometimes songs are just songs and aren't that deep. Dave Grohl usually says his songs are about different things to different people. Everyone has their own interpretation
It was indeed used for Miami Vice but hit #2 on its release in 1981 and was not used for Miami Vice until 1984. It was a huge hit well before the TV show.

This was great. Was thinking would be great to see your rection to comments (and other sources of info) on your viral reactions...? Thinking 'In the Ghettos', Elvis! Im sure tcomments would let it make much more sense now!
The song is about he was very frustrated after the divorce. Phil went to his studio and was just saying anything that came to mind, he was just throwing around words, and the drums is when he felt it was his fault, and this is WHAT He has stated in a full interview about the song.
Well, yes and no. He's not Sir Phil Collins (although he should be). He's actually Philip David Charles Collins LVO. That stands for Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, which is a dynastic form of knighthood. He was awarded it in 1994 for his work with the Prince's Trust.
What Jimmy said initially about the drowning person was being said at the time. Eminem talked about this song in “Stan” and uses the narrative of the guy drowning and even more people heard it and a lot of people believe it😊

Don't pay any attention to the so called comics. Check out the younger Phil. Amazing energy and talent. His body is broken now and he can't drum anymore, which, I'm sure that is rough on him. He's had the most successful life and the worst marriages.
Maybe he'd like to give you an interview, who knows, I think it would be touching with you, someone who's interested not only in his music, but also in his deepest convictions.
A recommendation... do "Reaction to the Reaction" videos... Might want a guest to two for these, a person who could provide more topical information, or some kind of genre expert. Example -- If you had a Riki Rachtman type sit with you and review the Twisted Sister video.. you could comment not only on the video, but your reaction to the video. It'd give you the opportunity to detail what you were thinking in that moment, what you've learned since... the guest could fill in details you might not be aware.. how perhaps because you watched the Twisted Sister videos out of order, you were confused by the content.. or how Twisted Sister was influenced by the New York Dolls and KISS and how their make up and look was developed... or the story behind Neidermeyer and the Animal House movie.. it'd be a 2nd level "first time reaction". Maybe have some other YT'er or even a fan.. cross talk; You could do this with nearly all the videos.. the Aerosmith Sweet Emotion video (a song recorded in the 70s which became a bigger hit when re-released on greatest hits album, which was when video was made.. and the video director/producer created a video completely unrelated to the original song meaning.. just an idea. Its something I'd watch... you could double the views using your own content.
everyone under sun used to say that about the song in the 80s and 90s and i always thought it was real too, but we did not have the internet back then so things spread and was hard to prove they are true back then.
Ok so I have yet to see you react to any Weird Al Yankovic!!!!!!!! This is a must! That rabbit hole is deep and worth checking out! I’d be shocked if you haven’t at least heard of him! He does the song parodies and they are awesome! To name a few to start off with……. Eat it ( Beat it parody) Michael Jackson had his video set rebuilt and he used his choreographer so they could use them for his video! White and Netdy Amish Paradise Fat Word Crimes Bedrock Anthem. The list goes on!
Right On! There's also a Acapella group called "Naturally 7" who did a cover version of "In The Air Tonight" with a twist their own way that's pretty cool. If you're interested check it out, it's 7 dude's using their voices only with no instruments involved whatsoever. Even better is a video "Naturally 7" did called "Wall of Sound." Just thought I'd share a different vibe of music with you. ++Peace Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friends++ 🤘😜🤘
You should check out what might be the original rap song. The artist is REUNION and the song is LIFE IS A ROCK ( BUT THE RADIO ROLLED ME). A MUST LISTEN TO.
FYI, PHIL'S BEST "ANGRY DIVORCE SONG" IS ACTUALLY "I DON'T CARE ANYMORE", LIVE AT PERKINS PALACE, 1981 I THINK. YOU WANT TO SEE ANGER AND BITTERNESS??? THERE'S YOUR VIDEO. ruclips.net/video/BVS5X5Aw3yQ/видео.htmlsi=tBdpfdITMHLdtXnI
Very cool....but many people keep watching that one video of him on the drums black shirt....but the other concert in Berlin with the purple jacket.....is THE best if his voice lol just sayin, you have to listen to that one
That was the first time I heard that story. Though Eminem also got the title of the song wrong, so not a real reputable source (even if Stan is a killer song).
Please bro can you make a reaction to the best instrumebtal duo ever song....Lilly was here by candy dulfer and david a stewart, you gonna be blown away, trust me.Force to you
I wrote this in the original reaction: it's not false what I wrote. In this interview he mentions how this has a life of its own. That's because he recorded this song it hit the airwaves & rode the wave. Turn around it's featured in Miami Vice the popular TV show it took on an even bigger reaction hitting higher on the charts & became synonymous with the show. Previous comment: WATCH: Not just the concert footage which rises above expectation but also the scene from Miami Vice in how it's used. You truly are missing something if don't. This 'was' supposed to be Collins last tour (it wasn't). He was physically becoming immobile from health conditions. Sadly, has hearing loss, issues with nerves/tendonitis & spinal issues. The "last" legit farewell tour just completed. He couldn't do the drumming. His son did it for him & he mostly sat in a chair singing. Collins cane from a rich family. He went to London's equivalent of the US's 'Fame' school. He's starred while in school in a couple of East End musicals. He eventually became the drummer for Genesis. Phil's concert piece was stunning visually & musically watching him perform. Seeing the massive crowd is a jolt bringing in the love/anticipated emotion for supposedly his farewell tour. No that wasn't the exact introduction to his song. As many know, musicians/singers create added suspense to the intro so audience are unsure what to expect & aids in staging time gives the artist(s) time to get readied to go out. They also use lighting to hype up the suspense for the entrance. Right when Collins steps out is where the original song does begin.
Collins is a percussionist but also plays a variety of other instruments. He wrote the lyrics, composed the melody & arranged this song. There's a lot of percussion you may not realize present on the stage before his entrance (another drum set, cymbals, congas, & timbale). For this song, he played "all" the instruments in the studio including percussion laying the tracks then had other musicians play it live. Collins didn't just play with Genesis as the rock band's drummer, he did background vocals. Then became both drummer/soloist (which is crazy to be able to sing/drum simultaneously). After the lead left the group to go solo. Later on, he himself left the group & had a successful run as a soloist. He was known to have more percussion accompanying him. Additionally, he's done stage ensemble work too (Pick Up the Pieces). What I also will state, he was one of the artists who first used & introduced fans to synthesizers when were in infancy stage. Although widely used now without thought, he was always experimenting using them in his music background then.
Percussionist Started drumming at an early age. During time enrolled managed do a few movie roles as well as mentioned musicals. Once graduated, he answered a tryout for Genesis. His initial claim to fame was being the professional drummer/backup vocalist for the rock group. Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer) was the original lead then left the group to solo. Many may not know but Collins/Gabriel have similar style voices the group weirdly didn't get that. Genesis spent time auditioning for a replacement for Gabriel. They couldn't find anyone having a similar sound. Not thinking, the group never heard Collins sing solo on his own to realize he had a similar style. They chose Collins & rest is history. Not only was he a very good percussionist, but sang lead too. That's exactly why he's an amazing singer & on beat. Keep in mind known for his drum solos while singing! This meant, he sang ALL the Genesis songs while playing drums! This was not his only hit. He had many solo 'hits'. The song already had been released. It was a fluke as it was lent to the soundtrack of the premiere TV show 'Miami Vice'. That made it hit the charts even bigger the TV audience watching the premiere episode of the show & wanting more of the sound. Reason behind song: The life of a musician can be hard on marriages. At that time, he was married with 2 kids. Collins had been on a long tour which eroded his marriage. When returned home, he discovered that his wife had left w/ the kids & was in the process of divorcing him. Communication between them was very hostile & toxic. He also had a lot of downtime (in between tours) with pent up energy over this. He spent a lot of time writing & recording to deal with this divorce & alienation. He was depressed, constantly in arguments w/ soon to be ex-wife. In an interview stated felt terribly alone not used to being by himself. He wrote this song during the fits of anger/depression & impulsivity. (Interesting his ex-wife was not amused about the song feeling uncomfortable he wrote it towards her & their private situation making it public. Now being it's a huge hit, no longer cares about that but the revenue streaming in.) There wasn't a plan or reason to the words it just came out of him. The drum solo he kept playing different drum fills on the recording takes. It was luck of the draw & timing he chose that one. The song got added for filler for a TV pilot show (Miami Vice). It triggered such a strong reaction it started a trend still going on, where many current contemporary hits (including Rap) were incorporated into soundtracks for TV/movies to fit a mood. There had been music running in the background, but not as prominent & loud as this was punched up & featured. The setup: TV show based out of 1980s neon Miami. Atmosphere; wealthy, pretty girls in bikinis, Latin influence, European popular vacation spot & pastel colors (clothing & buildings). Miami at that time was known for its vicious gangsters, crime/drugs coming in from South & Latin Americas. It showed other than NYC & LA a strange criminal underbelly. It re-introduced Miami to the rest of the country away from being a senior citizen retirement community, but a lifestyle of another element not seen before wealthy, crazy & dangerous. We see various mixtures of characters in cast supporting roles being in the undercover drug task force (including James Olmos). Crockett & Tubbs were the lead undercover police officers. These 2 main leads were a pairing of an odd couple. Crockett's been undercover for a while, is a little loose & reckless. He recently lost a partner. He lives on a houseboat with his pet alligator Elvis. He drives a confiscated black 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona, commonly known as the Ferrari Daytona Spyder. Tubbs is more conservative stickler to the rules & more conscientious. The famous music scene: It's around dusk, they've been waiting for a criminal meet w/ the 'big' guy. Something happened as someone's been killed/injured & a person's been arrested. Minutes later, they get the phone call from one of their 'connections' to drive to the meeting point. They have no clue if been found out & what to expect at the meeting. Crockett gets to drive the Ferrari, while Tubbs sits in the passenger seat. The top is down. All the while going to the site, this song is playing loudly in the background. It sets the tone of unease, suspense & nervousness. While driving, it changes to nighttime as the breeze goes through the car. Exception of a few words, they're silently passing on busy streets becoming more industrialized & isolated to point at some marina they get out of the car. ruclips.net/video/-aMCzRj3Syg/видео.html I saw the pilot. It blew my mind how one song just fit the scene. Over the years, I used to drive hundreds of miles to go home. I wore this song out for about 5 years as I drove through the night. It fit the mood driving through some not nice neighborhoods of the Bronx to get onto I-80 to go the 400 miles home. Hours driving miles in darkness being sometimes the only one on the road fit the mood. Miami Vice as a result of the popularity of the song, was also unique in that many singers appeared on the show sometimes with one of the songs. Especially Glen Frey with his "Smugglers Blues". FYI: Phil Collins (himself), Sheena Easton, Glenn Frey, Gene Simmons, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richie, Barbara Streisand, Frank Zappa, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Miles Davis, The Power Station, Isaac Hayes, Jan Hammer (wrote the Miami Vice theme). Lyrics: I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord Well, if you told me you were drowning I would not lend a hand I've seen your face before my friend But I don't know if you know who I am Well, I was there and I saw what you did I saw it with my own two eyes So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been It's all been a pack of lies And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord Well I remember, I remember don't worry How could I ever forget It's the first time, the last time we ever met But I know the reason why you keep this silence up No you don't fool me The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows It's no stranger to you and me I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
Nicolas have toured with his father twice. he took tour duties on hos father's solo tour when he came back to do perform many of solo stuff and took over for his father on the Genesis final reunion tour. so he retired after the final Genesis tour. many fans criticize him and the band for having to tour because they were not too keen on seeing Phil performing while seated. Phill is pretty much done with drumming. his son Nicolas have done a fine job following in his father's footsteps.
Would you please listen to "Revolution" by Joe Nichols? It was performed years ago by Waylon Jennings but it has no hook and the best story telling and real life song you will ever hear. Thank you!
Yo H Mack spits some crazy stuff on Rick glassmans take your shoes off podcast episode with sal volcano. He does like three frees would love to see you to do a reaction vid with someone about it. It's wild.
I’ve always interpreted it as his wife was unfaithful; he witnessed it, perhaps he knew who she was cheating on him with, and it sounds like the anger is at the male; if he saw the make drowning he wouldn’t lend a hand, “I’ve seen your face before my friend”….
@@kbrewski1 Sure, if you say so. You are the one bent out of shape about how interpret the meaning of a song. And you obviously are not in touch with reality; the man is not going to publicly say that he was cuckolded. You probably believe everything the news tells you, too. Again, get a life.
Phil suffers from a spinal injury in 2007 that damaged his upper neck vertebrae and caused nerve damage. In his last performance he sang from a wheel chair. I don’t believe he will ever perform again.
Yep - it's about priorities when you have options. If the priority of economically wealthy people is to maintain that status of economic wealth, they will have lots to complain about the unfairness of all the things they must forego to make that happen. If you can't breathe, being hungry is less of a concern regardless of how much money you have. Fairness is just a matter of perspective, eh? 😉
k, was gonna come in here and question your use of "females" instead of women... but I realised if you need different buzz words for every vid you make.. probably doesn't matter :)

Jackie Stewart the F1 driver rented his house in Switzerland to Phil. To be fair to Phil's ex, he did divorce her by sending a fax from that house back her in the UK
I don't think I would even recognize him (Phil) if I saw him in the street...he just looks like an older bald guy lol (not that there's anything wrong w/that...jsn).
@@kbrewski1 actually that divorce was pretty public, along with the details. Not sure why u felt the need to display anger but u probably should seek professional help to deal with whatever issues r causing this anger.

One of the best song writers, performer, and actor died yesterday. Chris Christopher. I figured you would do something on him. Anyone that’s been around knows who he is.
Drowning Story should legit be one of the biggest urban legends ever!! If you Google it There IS an older interview I’ve seen on RUclips maybe where Phil says he was theatric at first putting paint cans on stage for emphasis. I don’t remember who it was he talked to but explained catching his wife cheating.
Please consider checking out Phil Collins DRUM DUET w/Chester Thompson from the “Genesis Invisible Touch Tour” Wembley Stadium 1987. You might also like the instrumental piece that the drum duet morphs into with an incredible light show to boot. I hope you’ll consider it but it must be the 1987 Wembley stadium, invisible touch tour version, IMO, that’s the superior version. 🔥🔥🔥👍🥂

Its something I'd watch... you could double the views using your own content.
We can see a classic scene with this song, in the first episode of TV show "Miami Vice" (in 1984)
BP, u should also check out The Little River Band. U won’t regret it.
everyone under sun used to say that about the song in the 80s and 90s and i always thought it was real too, but we did not have the internet back then so things spread and was hard to prove they are true back then.

About In the Air Tonight, it's worth checking the cover of that song made by Daughtry.
Him and Brad Arnold (3 doors down) do amazing job.
The drowning story of this song was or is still "urban legend" only.
Phil Collins (Sting) - Fields of Gold
You should check out what might be the original rap song. The artist is REUNION and the song is LIFE IS A ROCK ( BUT THE RADIO ROLLED ME). A MUST LISTEN TO.
I was just singing that song around the house the other day. It has stuck with me all these years.
It's wacky that British musicians speak with a British accent right!!? Crazy!!!
FYI, PHIL'S BEST "ANGRY DIVORCE SONG" IS ACTUALLY "I DON'T CARE ANYMORE", LIVE AT PERKINS PALACE, 1981 I THINK. YOU WANT TO SEE ANGER AND BITTERNESS??? THERE'S YOUR VIDEO.

Very cool....but many people keep watching that one video of him on the drums black shirt....but the other concert in Berlin with the purple jacket.....is THE best if his voice lol just sayin, you have to listen to that one
The lyrics imply discovered infidelity in a relationship.
I'm glad it's not a song about watching a man watching another man drowning
The myth about the song being about a guy watching a guy drowning was amplified in the early 2000's with eminem's song "stan" ft. Dido
Previous comment:
WATCH:
Not just the concert footage which rises above expectation but also the scene from Miami Vice in how it's used.
Percussionist
Started drumming at an early age.
Reason behind song:
The life of a musician can be hard on marriages.
Now being it's a huge hit, no longer cares about that but the revenue streaming in.)
There wasn't a plan or reason to the words it just came out of him.
The setup:
TV show based out of 1980s neon Miami.
The famous music scene:
It's around dusk, they've been waiting for a criminal meet w/ the 'big' guy.

I saw the pilot.
FYI:
Phil Collins (himself), Sheena Easton, Glenn Frey, Gene Simmons, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richie, Barbara Streisand, Frank Zappa, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Miles Davis, The Power Station, Isaac Hayes, Jan Hammer (wrote the Miami Vice theme).
Lyrics:
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
Well I remember, I remember don't worry
How could I ever forget
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep this silence up
No you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
There are different types of drowning!
Nicolas Collins is now 23, he was born on April 21 2021. Phil no longer plays drums and stopped touring in 2022. Due to on going health issues.
You realize this doesn't make sense...?
I like the first one better.
Would you please listen to "Revolution" by Joe Nichols? It was performed years ago by Waylon Jennings but it has no hook and the best story telling and real life song you will ever hear. Thank you!
Phil wrote several songs about his divorce
He is now in a wheel chair

That story about watching a man drowning is probably made more famous by Eminem’s “Stan”. He references it in one of the verses.
I’ve always interpreted it as his wife was unfaithful; he witnessed it, perhaps he knew who she was cheating on him with, and it sounds like the anger is at the male; if he saw the make drowning he wouldn’t lend a hand, “I’ve seen your face before my friend”….
You're WRONG. Time and time again he's explained its NOT ABOUT ANY SPECIFIC INCIDENT. GET OVER IT.

He's not performing, he's in a wheelchair now ! 😔
I worried if we would have enough to eat. Poor people problems
I wonder why he didn't mention his oldest child his daughter Lily Collins who is a well know actor!

That whole album was about his marriage and his divorce.
Jackie Stewart the F1 driver rented his house in Switzerland to Phil. To be fair to Phil's ex, he did divorce her by sending a fax from that house back her in the UK

The song is not about divorce, he was going through divorce when he wrote it.
He was divorced 3 times.
