    Used these "Bang Sticks" several times while diving in the Gulf of Mexico /SW Florida fishing/hunting for sharks. We always used 12 ga. 00 buck loads and sometimes slugs, both worked well. Mine was on a 4-5' foot graphite pole, and thrown/shoved like a spear(with attached retreval cable/line) so no recoil wounds. Now most sharks will not bother you unless YOU screwed around with them first! Good video and experiments, keep them coming.....

    • @nominalvelocity
      @nominalvelocity Год назад +5

      I've always wondered how much noise these things must deliver to your ears underwater since sound travels so much more efficiently in water. It must suck to be around one of these going off. Less suck than being eaten by a shark I guess, but still...

    • @texaswader
      @texaswader Год назад +5

      Same here in the Gulf of Mexico around the offshore platforms. Had a nice Amberjack on a spear gun and a shark decided he wanted it and got to close to me. 12 gauge bang stick with slug. I got my Amberjack. Other sharks ate the one I killed.

    • @nominalvelocity
      @nominalvelocity Год назад +6

      @engineergaming8920 I've done a fair amount of diving, and that's just not true. A shaker signaling device can be clearly heard a dozen times further away under water compared to in air. Tank bangers / clangers can be heard over a hundred meters no problem. Underwater horns can alert other divers even further away than that. Hell, you can hear tiny fish eating from surprising distances, and for me that sound is kind of deafening in a reef.
      As much as hear with my ears, I feel sounds through the base of my skull while underwater, maybe I'm the weird one though.

It's not muffled your just hearing everything in a totally new way.

  • @mdechjr
    @mdechjr Год назад +18

    just an FYI - Most divers wear gloves too! Also the power head is usually attached to a speargun shaft so you aren't holding it. You would not want to use a short shaft bangstick in the water as water is 25x denser than air so the shock under water is painful.

    • @lilkittygirl
      @lilkittygirl 9 месяцев назад

      You also have to consider potential shockwave damage to yourself as well if you're too close due to pressure differential.

    • @JosephHarner
      @JosephHarner 5 месяцев назад +1

      The reason why explosives are more dangerous underwater isn't because water is *dense* , it's because water is incompressible. This allows the pressure wave to travel *much* further before dissipating, as it doesn't lose energy compressing the medium it transfers through.

      Underwater you'll feel like someone kicked you in the face !!
      Because the Shockwave travels faster & more efficient underwater..
      Therefore not a lot of divers use it.. They prefer to punch the shark, knife it or just spear it with a normal spear gun, after removing the winged tip.
      Shark skin is very tough, almost armored, the spear will likely bounce off it.. Unless you have a big Tuna gun or something like that , blue water spear gun, then you might as well just kill the shark if you fear for your life.

    Typically bang sticks are mounted to the end of a Hawaiian sling or a spear gun, something with some mechanical power to force is to hit harder. They kill more by the concussion/explosion underwater than the bullet itself. The cartridge can also be painted with clear nail polish around where the bullet is seated in the case and the primer to waterproof it.

      Yep. I used to do this all the time when I scuba dived. We would go spear fishing and shoot 30+ pound ling cod or halibut. Not something you want to shoot with a spear with a point. I did shoot one, once with a spear with a point, before I got my powerhead. I was down about 80 feet and after shooting it, it was pulling me through the water by the line. I had to work my way down the line, hand over hand, until I got to the fish, and could kill it with my knife. Was way too much of a battle 80 feet down.

    Almost 60 years ago I got an after school job in a machine shop painting machine parts. It was a complete shop with everything and a lot of working stock. My friend and I would shoot set screws through tube stock with the numerous compressed air lines. Then I got an idea. I drilled, and tapped some solid round stock to make handles for quarter inch id tube, threaded the end and fashioned a chamber to screw onto it. Using a firecracker and a set screw I had made a single shot rifle! It was deadly powerful completely passing through a car door and almost through both sides of a 55 gallon drum. In theory, I could have used black powder but was afraid to try.

    Finally, someone gets to the bangstick. I've been WAITING for the day someone bangsticked a ballistic dummy. A rather bizarre weapon that I truly appreciate. The destructive effect of the .223 version I have is really quite startling. Although I've only ever used it on land. The bullet gets going fast enough to punch through about 1 1/2" of pine board and substantially deform, despite there being essentially no barrel and the bore is rather oversized at .234" diameter. Bullets obturate at the base. Chamber dimensions are quite large at the neck as well, and the mouth of a fired case expands to .250" inside diameter. They really burn the target too. Setting it off requires a certain technique. A sharp swift jab does best rather than a heavy thrust. Exceptionally fun. 😛 And dangerous. It becomes an illegal Any Other Weapon if detached from the ball grip rod, and once in a while a criminal will be found carrying one in this condition. Mine doesn't hurt at all to set off. Except for the occasional fragments it blasts back up towards my arm. But they're very small. Definitely requires extreme care in use. Not like YOU do! 😳 Thankfully someone else tried those stunts, because I had to wonder... 😏

You're definitely going straight to prison for that. Possibly for as much as 10 years just for possessing it. It has to remain attached to the ball grip rod of at least 26" overall length to remain legal. Unless you file a Form 1 request and get legal approval to register and tax stamp it as an Any Other Weapon with ATF.

    I've never used one myself but I have done a fair amount of diving and I have heard of these. From what I believe it's not the projectile that will kill the shark but the gas discharge from the round. I could be wrong though.
