  • In this edition of Wilson Center NOW, we are joined by Ambassador Kristie Kenney, former senior US diplomat who served as the 32nd Counselor of the US Department of State and Ambassador to the Republic of Ecuador, the Philippines, and Thailand. She discusses the first-ever US-Japan-Philippines trilateral summit held in Washington on April 11th. Kenney explains how the summit highlights the importance of the US Indo-Pacific Strategy and could change the military and economic security dynamic in the region going forward.

We loved ambassador Kristie Kenney. If I recall my family got a chance to take a selfie with you. May I add just my own thoughts. Growing up in the island of Panay particularly Iloilo City, the legacy of the once Commonwealth government still there standing and strong. My schools high school and college was built that time. Iloilo mission hospital one of the earliest hospital in the Philippines still standing and functioning. CPU/West Visayas state universities were all built in the early 1900's. Many Ilonggos became wealthy during the good old days of the Philippines under the USA. Their mansions still there standing. Thank you for your service to us and yours.

Japan and Philippines nurtured the relationships to what is now today. Our Christian faith imbedded in our culture helped us to embrace, forgive . Japan's honesty truly helped and healed.. Japans culture is insightful and polite.I remember in the 60s when Japan helped build our main highway with money we borrowed from Japan.! . I remember my mother asking me to pray for spirits of Japan buried near our backyard, In the 80s the body was claimed by the family. We were enemies that became friends.. Ambassador you are truly a gift to us . Remember the Japanese soldier in the mountain ,Filipinos did not kill and return him to Japan a senior citizen??

Filipinos are always grateful with the U.S. for the fact that we were educated by the American teachers in which the Spanish colonizer did not do, during their colonization of the Philippines for almost four hundred years. It is not a secret that the U.S. bought the Philippines and the Filipino people with it, but it was indeed a blessing for the Filipino people. The Americans built roads and schools and made the Philippines ahead of its neighbors. Today, Filipinos are the most English speaking in Southeast Asia, and thanks to you, Uncle Sam. God bless.

China back off in our Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone within 200nm.
On July 12, 2016, the arbitral tribunal adjudicating the Philippines' case against China in the South China Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the Philippines, determining that major elements of China's claim-including its nine-dash line, recent land reclamation activities, and other activities in Philippine waters. We should not recognize the "One China Policy" China defiant behavior. China has double stardard in term of the international policy.

There's a move by the family of Former President Duterte to oust Marcos Jr. One of the issues being used is the decision of Pres Marcos Jr to strongly push back against Chinese aggression in the SCS and to pivot away from China and back towards the US, Japan and other traditional allies.
The US, Japan and other countries should help the Philippines economically by investing more in the Philippines.
There's a battle for the minds and hearts of Filipinos going on right now. So far, Marcos Jr has the upper hand over Former President Duterte.
If Marcos Jr is ousted, the successoe will be VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president who is pro-china and rabidly anti-US.

the worst thing this region should expect. the Philippines is making a big mistake to play into the playbook of the US which has a clear hegemony policy worldwide. the US has only a few years not at war with others for the last few hundred years. an economy that largely depending on wars.

Your playbook just new. You need to playback the history of both countries. Century ago. The greatest naval battle of the Pacific is in the Philippine islands. Those sunkin ships under our oceans says it all. If you would like to join those memorial Warships you're welcome. They're all a sanctuary of our fishes under the sea.
