    Hi Steve, Thank you so much for this VLOG. I've been a subscriber to your channel for a while now and have really learned so much from you. Watching this VLOG somehow something just clicked and I was able to see values, shadow and light facilitated by guash. Thank you so much. It's snowing here in Seattle now but I can't wait to get outside with my paints.
    Best wishes for a healthy and Peaceful 2019 to you and your family

    68!! that's crazy warm. we did get up to 48 one day, then back down, single digits again here in NY. Sunday may get up to 40's again, so perhaps another balmy day coming your way. I noticed that James Gurney has been doing some plein air this winter too. You guys are more rugged than this old farmgal.

    Simply beautiful! Wish I had made it out with my paints on that hot spell. I did get out with the dog which made the dog and my wife very happy! I enjoyed your gouache tutorial. Especially the section dealing with white. Right now I’m using china white watercolor and/or ink for white. Next time I’m near my craft store I’m going to pick up a tube of white gouache and give it a try. Also, looking forward to another warm snap after this weekend when I can get out and paint. As always thanks for another wonderful teaching session and a lovely painting! Missed the Psalm....

    This is another great lesson in dual contrasts - kinda a "gray day's duel" between light and dark values. I enjoyed the highlights added to the side of the middle ground trees; it placed them there visually. Again, with the highlights on the branches of the foreground trees, it pushed them forward. The first reference photo looked as if the branches all melded together so the addition of the second reference photo brought interest to the painting. Nice way to use two photos, Steve! Thanks so much for this lesson!

    a high of only 36 degrees, here today, in Colorado, but warmer days for the next 10 days or so. Am just learning watercolor, but having a blast doing so. After painting in acrylics the past ten years. Definitely a challenge because they're so different. Lovely result Steve. I was fascinated by all the colours you were laying in, when I was seeing a very "drab" scene. You brought it to life beautifully. It seems you are OK using your watercolour brushes with your gouache - i.e. you don't keep separate brushes for gouache use.

      Diana Colt why do you believe it is simple for him? I see him working at creating something beautiful. He is also explaining the work he is doing and errors he makes on the way. I am particularly irritated by a few people close to me that like to believe that life is so easy for others. They are overlooking the trials, efforts and frustration, grit that it takes to arrive at a deeper satisfaction ( than popping a pill, making a purchase, escaping the present with a movie or a salon service) sick I am of hearing this. I’ve been triggered.

    What's this, a VLOG?!?! Woah. My inspiration level is through the roof. I'm really happy to see that you've done some of your work outside, observing from life, while also taking advantage of the benefits of being in an indoor studio setting. I sometimes feel like I'm "cheating" by not doing the entire painting outside.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Arleesha! I know what you mean. So many times I say I'm going to just sit and finish outside but I never do. It just looks different when I come inside. I think the benefit sticks, that of letting the minds eye see the colors, values and perspective first hand. If I finish it soon after the live memories remain.

You’ve gone into it in several videos but I am only just now ‘hearing’ what you said about not including detail for detail’s sake. It has to have a purpose. I think that would make a fascinating video topic. ✨🙏🏼✨

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 лет назад +2

      Right and it differs with the painting. I actually mention it in several videos but not sure which ones at the moment. 😄 It usually has to have a component of drawing the eye, establishing an edge or showing scale more accurately. Something like that.

We went to Las Vegas for a conference last week so I brought a small sketching book and paints ... it snowed there too! So I will live vicariously through you for now. I'm enjoying your gouache review and demonstrations--not sure I will be trying it out any time soon myself, but feeling very tempted to redo the sky in a large (2x4 foot) watercolor commission I'm doing, the way Frank Francese does in one of his watercolors on the Cheap Joe's channel (though he didn't have a streaky underpainting he was trying to cover up). Doing such a large sky while running the stove at the family cabin meant the paper dried way faster than I expected and my sky came out a bit more streaky than I wanted. :( That said, I'm worried a gouache sky will not fit well with the "glowy" feel of the rest of the painting...

    Very, very nice!! I love the color and improvisation you put into that. Turned out with a really nice sense of light that the photos didn’t have. 👍 I have the same issue with plein air. I love getting out and painting but I don’t think I’ve completed any plein air paintings that I’m happy with. I don’t know if it’s the feeling of being exposed and out of my studio element or if it’s feeling rushed with the changing light. Not sure but it’s always frustrating. Loved the intro on this one, too. However, I don’t even want to know what necessitated changing your pants between leaving home and getting to your painting spot. 😂😉

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 лет назад

      Thanks Brian! Yeah it is sort of frustrating. I remember one plein air session back during the 30-30 challenge that worked out really well and I more or less finished the painting to my satisfaction on the spot. It's rare. Thats my main problem is they just look different in the studio. Its ok though. I'm willing to make that my process if it works best. I know of some plein air artists that never do anything more on location than a couple rough sketches.
      LOL! Oh man, the pants. Well, I've been caught in trying to do a creative, "next day" pick up shot to tell the story basically. I thought of the correct shirt but forgot about the pants. What an inept film maker I make. 😂😂😂

    Mike, great video, thank you! BTW, what is the pencil/pen case that you see in the video? Thanks.

      I forget the name of it. I got it from jetpens.com You can probably search there and find it. I have a variety of pencil cases I own and try and am largely undecided about which I like best. Certain ones do better in certain situations depending on size, shape and holding capacity.

    Thanks Steve ,another great lesson . What do you think about using white acrylic instead of gouache ?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 лет назад

      Yes, that works. It’s a bit less opaque but you can build it up.

    I'm not really familiar with gouache and how it differs from watercolour, Steve...can you explain?

    • @myffanwy2
      @myffanwy2 5 лет назад

      Not to worry...I got it!! Gouache is similar but more opaque..? I've just never used it.

      Correct, tons of RUclips videos on it. Similar to school tempera but higher quality.

    Love watching you draw and paint. Have you seen this? Documented Journey: ruclips.net/video/y2SyfuNWV5s/видео.html
    She reviews a plein air palette that looks like something you might be interested in. There is a link under her video for the palette. Its pretty cool :) Reasonably priced for what it is. In any case, thank you for all you do. You are an inspiration!

      Yes, Expeditionary Art sells the same palettes as the person I sometimes buy from, Adventurous Artist. (www.adventurousartist.net) Cool little palettes.

    Doesn't gouache make us lazy? We supposed to plan ahead and leave the light areas untouched on the paper. Instead we paint it dark then use gouache to put the light back? 😂

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 года назад +1

      Ridiculous! There is no "supposed to" in watercolor. There is only preference and results. Gouache is particularly useful in cases like this, plein air where planning and masking is much more difficult. Are those who paint in oils or acrylic lazy? Go ask James Gurney what he thinks about using gouache?

      @@mindofwatercolor I've forgot to add "in theory" to my comment. 😄I was just thinking about it, nothing more.
      I'm a total beginner and I do have white gouache but haven't used it yet. I'm far from your level of expertise, basically just learning to control water, pigment and brush whenever I try to paint something. 🙂
      (Thank you for answering! I really appreciate it.)
