Exploring the Gateway to the COTSWOLDS || Burford

- So, today we are out and about walking in the Cotswold town and civil parish of Burford, which is located in the west of Oxfordshire, England. Burford is 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham.
Burford is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. It has quite an eclectic mixture of architecture, everything from typical Cotswold Stone cottages through to a baroque-style town house which was recently the Methodist Church (the building that we peer through the front gates in the video). It looks like it has been recently sold! The population of the town in 2011 was 1,422.
One of the most popular buildings in the town is the parish church - St John the Baptist. It is a Grade I listed building. In 1649 the church was used a prison to hold mutineers from the New Model Army Banbury.
As the A361 road runs through the centre of Burford, it makes for an incredibly busy thoroughfare regardless of the time of day (also the town is not surprisingly & understandably very much a favourite tourist hot spot). The town has a large car park which is free to park in. I must say, I am quite taken with Burford, so much so that I returned a couple of days later for a night walk in the rain.
If you enjoy history and finding more out about places then Burford is well worth deep diving into to discover more.

Again with all the little details-the wooden bench and potted topiaries at the bus stop, the arched passageway leading to an enclosed courtyard, the side street lined with homes with elegant facades. To the American eye it’s all so magical.

What a very pleasant spring walk- and I do so love the early morning ones! (All the walks are nice, it’s just that the morning ones are my favorites). This was a most picturesque village, with lovely homes and interesting shops- and the one shop window afforded us a fleeting glimpse of the person whom we can thank for regularly supplying us with these very enjoyable walks!
I wonder if the people who dwell behind these windows in Cotswold townships know that folks all around the world enjoy seeing the area where they live through these virtual walks. I hope so! The numerous clumps of bright daffodils that you passed were a lovely contrast to the general grayness of the buildings- which was compounded by the gray skies that day. We have a clump of cheerful purple crocuses up here, but so far no daffodils (or rather, we have just the leaves so far). I appreciated the sense of humor of the person who put up a window with lit candles and a plaque underneath saying
“On this site nothing happened” (with a date 200+ years back given)! That must give a good laugh to many passers-by. : )

I think it is fairly well known to the locals/residents that the Cotswolds are literally world famous and with even more walking channels popping up here on RUclips as well as the area increasingly being documented on other social media platforms, the Cotswolds is destined to gain even more notoriety over time I suspect.
When I spotted that plate, I thought to myself I have got to include that in the video :).

I guess I am not overly surprised to know that the Cotswolds area is famous, as I have noticed other virtual walks in that area on RUclips besides yours. (They look nice, too, but I like yours, and my schedule is busy- so yours is always my first choice to watch and comment on.🙂). I just hope that too much touristy stuff doesn’t come in and spoil the charm of the Cotswolds, as happens in summer in the Cape Cod, MA area of the US. I guess it can be a nightmare for year round residents during those months. (We visited once in May, before tourist season, and it was lovely!). I had not noticed particulars about your hat, just that you had one on; it’s funny to think of it looking like one of the guards wearing bearskin. (Can’t imagine how hot nor now heavy those are for the guards to wear…). I will look forward to the rain walk, as those are always so peaceful and pretty. Have a great week!
@@janetryan9779 it is a bit of a double edged sword because on one hand there are many small businesses that rely on tourism to stay afloat ie : tea rooms, B&B’s etc especially in the popular villages & towns but on the other hand there are bound to be some negative aspects, like parking problems etc.

I live in Australia. I was fortunate enough to have visited Burford as part of a Cotswolds bus tour when I visited England back in 2018. I loved it. There's nowhere on earth like the Cotswolds.

Hello, what a gorgeous early Spring walk! Beautiful buildings & landscape, the birds are music to my ears & we also have some blooms reaching for the sun & the yellow is stunning on the daffodils. It did rain Saturday all day & heavy wind( which I admitt to liking shh..🤗) so I sat at my Spinning wheel to spin & drank alot of tea!! Those buildings will be stunning in Spring when the plants bloom, if I close my eyes I can picture it! I love your area so much & appreciate these walks so much, I do hope you know that, it makes my heart happy & all the more determined to get over there. Hey OAAW~ That was unexpectedly fun. Not picturesque in the way I have come to expect your Cotswolds to be picturesque - more citified picturesque, if you will. I think a similar walk in summer would be interesting. I loved all the benches, but especially the patio with the benches, planters, and mini daffodils! I’d just move in and camp! Yeah… the night walk from here will be interesting. And a summertime one too. While I was thinking about seeing the trees and vines trained on the building facades all leafed out, I don’t remember seeing a mid-evening from you? So many fab possibilities! I find that even in my own town, it feels different day and night and through the different seasons and weather. It’s so interesting. Good weekend here… to end the week.😉 Despite having little winter this winter, I am very much looking forward to the warmer weather that comes with spring. I adore the winter-to-spring transition! The plaque on the wall "on this site in 1700's nothing happened" 😂😂😂 But today's walk seems very gray even the sky and it all looks very gothic especially with the ravens in the background..

Precioso Burford, yo también volvería una noche lluviosa para caminar por sus calles. La iglesia es toda una obra arquitectónica plena de historia. Maravillada por sus bellas calles y comercios. I now understand me family's ever motto "waste not, want not" for Cotswoldians leave things alone and use everything because everything is built to last...forever. I very much enjoyed window shopping and glimpsing into how Cots live and think. It surely is a very comfortable village dressed in monotone colors and hues. It must be chilly air for I found 🚶warming himself with a heater vent. 🤍 15:39 😁, 1:00:54🌿tangle, 1:01:05✝️ plus each store, cafe, townhouse, hotel.... Don't be taking me slowpoke watch where we placed our steps today... me Internet was giving me heck, stopping and 🌀 mid screen, constantly changing quality from 720 down each rank to 240.... any and all to frustrate.... I'd just walk into one of Burford's stores and start afresh exiting til the gremlins found me again... You were right, there's alot to absorb in Burford, it WAS nice!

You, sir, are a pluviophile who gets high on petrichor (me too). A plu is one who loves, thrives & finds joy and peace in rain. A pet, well, petra is Greek for stone, ichor is the golden fluid in veins of immortals. In science it's "geosmin", uh, well, believe it or not, that heavenly smell one perceives just before rain commences? Is, uh, actually a chemical emitted by soil dweller bacteria when they detect rain drops... ahhhhhh, how relaxed one gets ..... 🙃
