I agree. I received my Technician License several years ago, and I still know where to start. lol I really don't hardly know a lot about the radios and programming. I want to learn so much, but I don't really know where to go. I joined my local Ham Club, but I kinda felt like a outcast.
Even if you have been licenced for a few years, if you don't have much experience, tune to 146.52 and give your call sign and say you are new to HAM radio and you are looking for a contact. We love getting people on the air. When someone answers talk about it. Soon other HAMS will hear and want to talk to. You may even be able to meet an Elmer this way. And just because you don't hear any chatter does not mean people are not listening. Good luck and I would love to hear how it went.
Short answer - no. In order to do ham properly it will take a lot of dedicated time. It would take a lot less time and money to outfit the family with mobile and HT GMRS radios. Having repeaters nearby (with offgrid power capability) will help but those could be jammed up during the day as well. Prep comms take time, money and know-how regardless. Plan accordingly.
