    I wanted to add a little something to this video, I have a 17 ft.³ chest freezer. I also have an electrical monitor on my house that monitors the usage of all the appliances and everything in my house, it found out for me that my chest freezer can be off for over 10 1/2 to 12 hours at a time before it needs to start back up and get cold again. I also have a 17 foot upright freezer. It takes a little more power than that and it comes on a little more often. They’re not quite as efficient as the chest freezers. The chest freezer uses about 117 W while it’s running the upright freezer uses about 167 when it’s running.

    I worry about storing gasoline from somebody who’s done it for quite a while, I store only non-ethanol gasoline in NATO style gas cans. I have kept it that way for five years or more at a time with no detriment to its quality and usability.

    Milton results. (Tampa) We evacuated and and stayed away for two days. Added a 2200w small generator Added 600w to the 300w solar we had. Setup more 12v low voltage indoor and outdoor lighting that is normally powered by the solar system so there is no interruption. Replaced the home network UPS with a small battery bank inverter. Dusted off the hurcane lamps and restocked lamp oil.

    Yes, I agree with the solar. We immediately ordered a solar generator and panels after seeing how hard it was for NC victims to get gas for the gas generators. Also, simple solar outdoor lights would be a good source of light that can be freely recharged everyday! Thank You for the many ideas to improve our "simple" everyday preps.

    About chainsaws. I'm an old lady alone out in the boonies. I have a little 5 inch battery operated chainsaw and it rocks! I don't use it to fell trees ( except for unwanted saplings), but for storm clean-up mostly. It is unbelievable how much I can accomplish with that little booger. Even larger downed stuff with a series of v-cuts around the perimeter enough to straight cut through the middle of the cutting area. These companies that have lots of tools that use the same battery are smart. That way you're accumulating batteries and whatever tool you're using, you already have battery back-ups. Battery operated fans and all sorts of things come in very handy when power is out, and the batteries recharge fine on some solar device with just a few hundred watts. My battery is 400 watts and is 12 years old and I keep it plugged in and charging things. Don't underestimate pass through charging.

    • @Dara-kg2zb
      @Dara-kg2zb 15 часов назад

      Battery banks normally come with multiple ways to charge and include the chargers with the device. So you aren't stuck with just solar charging.

    Most people who have generators have a few days of gas but on days 4-7 everyone is lined up trying to get the last drops out of the (cash only) gas station, and what do you do when your generator is the only one still making noise on day 14+? Pro move for advanced users in wooded states is to build a wood gasifier. You can power vehicles and generators on firewood.

    Stay away from the cheap 2 pack FRS radios if you want something more than a child's toy with bad sounding audio.. The better locked channel handy talkies he shows are more expensive but have better sounding audio and are for the tech challenged with some allowing access to GMRS operation.. A programmable radio of the Chinese variety are better yet but do require a programming cable and computer with the free CHIRP software or the one provided with some radios but require both PC knowledge and some ability to learn the more technical functions of VHF/UHF operation.. They make two varieties of hand held and mobile radios, ones without complicated displays and buttons and ones with them.. Once you leap from those to ham radio which for the first tier just requires a small amount of study and a test it opens up far higher legal power and longer ranges with higher quality radios.. This is where you get access to thousands of repeaters and internet links that can allow you to even use your cell phone and an internet connection to access radios all around the planet.. For truly independent non infrastructure long distances the second tier ham radio opens direct nationwide/global (at times) communications on HF radio but at this point for local disasters and communications it is overkill..

    Great “better than nothing” recommendations for most people. I’m very technical but ham was way overkill for me. I also wanted it to be usable for me AND the family.

    •  День назад

      Many people around my area have replaced the CB radio with FRS and GMRS simply because it is better for the couple mile range.. Having the small hand held in your glove box, cup holder, pocket or purse is far more convenient than the larger CB walky-talky.. You can get a GMRS mobile radio for the house and put up an outside antenna that is higher up and while still using low power FRS channels get far more range.. For reliable emergency long range communication GMRS at 50 watts with a good outside antenna with directional ones being even better can reach out over 100 miles if you are also in a higher elevation or can put the antenna very high up.. I am a ham operator and so are my two sons but my oldest son maintains a family GMRS license so we can fall back on that for the non hams in our extended family..

When I was a kid we went through a couple of floods, a cyclone or 2, and bushfires. I'm now 62yo and teach my own kids and grandkids the same lessons. It's gotten us through many trying times. Love this format BTW. Not many preppers give real world examples like this. Cheers.

    Those who are preppers and always prepare be good or bad news. Something you need to remember what would be the first thing you would grab when you run out of the house to save your family and yourself I would recommend number one. Keep all the important paperwork that proves you’re a lot your land your insurance, your identity, who you are mortgage whatever birth certificates Because the cell phone laptop will be useless. It won’t be any power all those paperwork in one place and waterproof container, that’s easy to carry food. You can add water to. It’s cold or not. It’s food something buried a garbage can far away from your house that you know where it is at least you try to remember you can bug out there, but you can identify who you are if you don’t keep paperwork and if it’s really severe, you’re Social Security number on your arm with a sharpie marker so if you do not make it out alive, they can identify who you are. It’s tragic, but as a retired nurse, I’ve seen worse things than North Carolina. I was in the midst of hurricane Katrina and that was sad too, but God bless you all. May you all consider putting the Lord first in your home because prayers do work.

    Mindset. Yeah, mindset and the ability to adapt, probably the biggest thing. Especially to judge what the situations is, and what your response needs to be. Bug in/bug out. Time to run, yes/no. A few things you need for ANY emergency, but what do you need for THIS situation. Etc. -- A note about documents, especially MAPS. Vac sealing is good, especially for originals. But I found another useful approach. Staples store can print color maps on "Skrim Vinyl". The SV material is waterproof (I tested it) and tear resistant. I could be useful for many docs, but maps are what I've tried.

    I'm old so I am pretty good with paper maps. I have to tell you, after a disaster, your landscape that you use to navigate by changes. I lived through the ice storm of '98 in Canada and New York. I lived in a small town completely cut off from the US. Anyway, I had a hard time navigating in a small town I lived. My neighbor from Haiti stated that the damage was worse than a hurricane. She packed up and went back to Florida. Anyway, paper maps are a necessity in my go tote. I may have to take back roads etc.

      I too like paper maps and a good compass.

    Yes! I live with my son. I've been prepping since 2015 but had been studying for several years prior. I have go totes in my unattached garage. Where I live, my primary disaster worry is tornadoes and house fires. We're up north. Anyway, my son goes through clothes and throws them away. I took his jeans, patched them and put in this tote. I know they fit him and he liked to wear them. As a kid, I've seen people's house burn down in -40 degrees, then they escape the house and freeze. We have a quick place to run to for instant clothes and warm things. Also, a friend of mine's house burnt down and she had to go shopping for clothes and only a few things were available for their immediate needs. Since I live rural, instant shopping is just not available. Therefore, instant old clothes will do for an immediate need. The reason houses burn down at this temperature is because people use secondary sources. I don't sleep with these on. I've got down comforters and wool blankets for night time.

    I recently came across your channel. I’ve watched two videos so far and in each video I’ve learned something new that I have not come across in various other prepper channels I’ve been watch for years. Thank you! Great job!
