Bed rotting is a popular TikTok trend that’s been on the rise these past few years. I’ve suddenly started seeing content from Japanese content creators who are bed rotting on another level. Like eating questionable looking food, and living with bugs as roommates. Is this content posted by people going through something, or is it just another industry plant making ragebait content? I’ll be talking about Asian work culture, bed rotting, and reacting to some interesting videos of Asian Garbage House Influencers #edvasian

i genuinely think this happens because its as close to killing yourself as you can get without actually dying.
its just lying down and waiting to die and imo explains the risky behaviour too.

I do NOT believe he’s not sick. Mold poisoning can show up as a number of different symptoms: Headaches, asthma, chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, etc. So even if he isn’t experiencing stomach issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that does not mean he isn’t slowly degrading his own health. Mold exposure is incredibly damaging.

I believe I’m the complete opposite and extreme from him. I cringe when someone dips their fry in my ketchup, if someone touch my face then all I think about is wether their hands were clean or not. When I see one speck of dust in my water or on my food then I’m not hungry anymore. I can’t even let the whites of my nails grow because I don’t want any dirt to sit under it and I have to dry my hands with paper towels as well as have to change my pillow nightly. I wipe the toilet seat with spray after every visit because to see dust or fluid stains on it make me sick. All of my habits are time consuming and make me worry constantly. So this is my morbid curiosity now 😂 Maybe his content will help me become less extreme lol… Or it could go the opposite way 😭💀

i used to 'bed rot'. it was shortly after my dad was hospitalized for covid-19. i was severely depressed. i refused to eat, refused to shower (my skin was sticky from excess sweat from just lying in bed with my bedcovers all day), refused to attend the online school (wasted about 5-7k USD and affected my GPA perm.), refused to brush my teeth (on weeks on end), and refused to clean up my room. i let the food that my mother forced on me sit on my dresser for days where it would be cold, dry, and have flies on it. there would be piles of plates and dishes. i had matted oily and itchy hair as well as itchy/irritated hair *down below* because i wasn't washing. i was cripplingly depressed for roughly a year like this, only taking showers when i couldnt stand the itching anymore and even then only using water, no soap. i sheltered and deleted my social medias which removed a lot of my friends (since i was always an online introvert). when i had to go to the bathroom i would hold it in and delay it until i couldnt anymore.
i don't know what they're going through, or if it's a fad, but it was a horrible life. i would never wish the mentality, negativity, loathe, hatred, and sadness i went through everyday on anyone. i pray for them, even if its just for show or not, to find the strength to pull themselves from it.

15:49 to answer your joke question seriously, the bugs are leaving her food alone because a lot of food we humans eat also happen to be food that are natural pesticides. Foods that give the flavor to things like onions, garlic, mints and peppers with capsaicin are natural pesticides. Even things like nicotine and caffeine are technically pesticides. Human involvement to enhance these flavors or effects beyond what naturally exist make them more potent, so given what the plants naturally produced, you can only imagine how intense they became once humans got involved. If an insect goes after food that has such ingredients anyway, then the food is very far gone from having molds and bacteria break down those natural pesticides to make it edible for scavenger bottom feeders like some roach species and many beetle species.

@@s-e-e-k-i-n-g ive had my food handlers card for years and for most food it goes bad after 2 hour unrefrigerated at room temperature, if the temperature is hot it will go bad after 1 hour. I toss leftover pasta and rice after 5-6 days so roughly a week, ive eaten 7 day old rice and been okay and I have a week stomach. The longer its left out the more dangerous it can get because its exposed and bacteria grows rapidly at warm temperatures. Preventing cross contamination between food can also greatly reduce the risk of food born illnesses. As long as its not left out of the refrigerator and not super old you should be okay.

so i'm affected by clinical depression. seeing this being "trendy" is super gross (like any other things considered bad but are still trending) and it makes me feel like shit.
bedrotting is not "relaxing and having a nice day off". bedrotting is genuinely one of the worst things because you barely function at that moment. you don't get up to drink or eat, use the bathroom, shower or brush your teeth.
on really bad days, plates, bottles and other packaging are piling up in my room and i feel so gross, that i have to force myself to take a shower and then clean everything up. like literally EVERYTHING. bedrotting is not fun, bedrotting is wanting to die without having to actually do something. you are literally mentally and physically rotting away from life.

Being in a messy environment made me feel even worse about myself, and it made my negative self talk HORRIBLE. I wouldn't even type some of the things I would say to myself... well, you don't have to imagine, you know. But for others, imagine being filled with so much self hatred and hopelessness, you don't even feel entitled to a comfortable, clean space. When you get used to the misery, you talk yourself into deserving it. 💔 Just that single aspect I wouldn't want to wish on another person. This s**t isn't glamorous; its slow rotting Hell.
This month I cleaned my 2 year depression pit, and it feels so good shedding the old stuff and getting organized. When I finished, I literally cried and apologized to myself.

true, i have a son and i especially feel bad when ive been in bed so much that i get to spend less time with him....
i never let my room get dirty like that tho, once or twice a day i go around and pick up anything that i left around, cups and plates go to the dishwasher 1/2 a day.
not keeping my room just makes me feel even worse so i try to keep it up, as its only a minimum effort.
for me its not really like i cant do anything but i just dont want to do anything
i dont want to get up to get food, i dont want to get up to use the bathroom, i dont want to get up to do whatever needs to be done, i dont want to soicalize etc.
i think its partly because of depression and partly because of add, maybe ptsd from a toxic relationship as well...

I have depression too and I actually like that it’s trending even if they’re conflating it with just being lazy in bed for a day. It normalises the idea of bed rotting and makes it seem less like you’re disgusting if you do it. Like if I told someone I stayed in bed all day they’ll just think I’m doing the trend which is nice. I like that it’s getting rid of the stigma and makes me feel more normal.

As another depressed person seeing people make this a trend like the original commenter said it’s gross.
I’ve unfortunately had depressive episodes where I wouldn’t take care of myself at all. I would only get out of bed to use the bathroom. I didn’t shower or brush my teeth or even change my clothes as gross as it sounds I just rotted in my own filth for weeks at a time. I probably would have been growing mold like some of the people shown in the video but thankfully my parents who were bringing me food would also take away dishes.

I never got as bad as the examples in the video, but for about two years after graduating high school, I was a neet who wound up socially isolating myself severely. My social anxiety and agoraphobia got incredibly bad, to where I’d go sometimes 2-3 months at a time without leaving my house since I live with my parents and didn’t need to go to stores. It was a horrible way to live, and I’m incredibly thankful for my best friend slowly getting me back into theater, which slowly built my confidence back up and lessened my anxiety and agoraphobia.
Those two years were some of the worst of my life, and it’s a little tough seeing that lifestyle idealized/romanticized when I know firsthand how crippling it is.
But on the bright side, I’m in college now, and I’m a big part of my local community theater scene. So things do get better!!

I'm chronically ill/disabled and don't have a support network to help. I'm also living in poverty, struggling to afford food. I'm embarrassed to let people see where I live. Survival is a struggle, and I would KILL to live in a healthy, happy brain and body. This all smacks of neurotypical/able-bodied privilege. So many people would judge me/stigmatize me horrifically, yet these people flaunt it online?
I also used to live in a hoarder house (I am a child of hoarder). It was traumatizing to live there. I'd have panic attacks from how hellish that house was.

Our situations are vastly different (I'm not chronically ill/disabled nor in poverty) but I feel the same. I'd do so much to have a healthy mind that doesn't have me feeling like I've reached pure insanity each day, where I just wonder when it'll all end so I can *finally* enjoy what comes to me in life. And I'm embarrassed to think about people knowing how I spend most of my free time, just not really doing anything. If I'm not on my phone trying to distract myself from my thoughts I'm just lost in space. A lot of people would think it's laziness, and maybe that's the case, but you and I both know "laziness" doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's not uncaused
I know this may sound empty but I really do hope it gets better for you. I'm still more lucky in so many ways, solely cause of where and who I so happened to be born to. Not out of my own hard work but out of the circumstances of my birth, and it's so stupid how people's lives can be so drastically unfair and horrible because of way too many factors far, far outside of their control
All I can say for advice is if you haven't already, perhaps check if there are any services around you that offer support for where you're at? Logically you've probably done this already, but I thought it might be worth mentioning

Our place is a one bedroom unit and I live here with my Mom. My Mom sleeps on the couch. She’s also disabled (hereditary syndrome) and almost 70. The house is a mess, I’m a mess, I’d be too embarrassed to let anyone inside and I very rarely go out if I can avoid it. I have no friends and nothing to do and no future. We need help but getting it requires jumping through so many hoops that we just don’t have the energy for. I barely have the energy or willpower to go to medical appointments. I spend a lot of time sleeping because at least my dreams are interesting.

I was diagnosed with depression at 13 and started showing signs as early as 7 years old (long, sad story). I'm 22 and it's never gotten better, I've just gotten better at managing it.
When I can't, you can smell my room down the corridor and up the stairs. Dishes, glasses and cutlery go missing and moldy. Shopping bags become rubbish bags. I find rotten fruit between my sheets and my skin when I wake up. My skin is sticky, itchy, and rashed. I'm a dead man walking as I bedrot, and then I am forced either by immense discomfort or concerned intervention to get things back in order.
My bedrotting has made me keep friends and partners at arm's length at all times. It impacted my studies so that I couldn't graduate with the rest of my cohort, and I was almost dropped from the degree entirely. Before that, it impacted my social life and attendance in high school. I was hospitalised last year for a staph infection after scratching at a rash on my thigh with dirty nails. My teeth are screwed.
Bedrotting isn't a cozy day in. It isn't just lazing around scrolling on your phone all day. It isn't being a pig for attention online. It's living s*ic*de.

One thing that you might not be recognizing as someone not in Japan, but trash disposal rules are really strict here, so I think that it might be harder to get rid of stuff even if you want to. For example, I can only throw away cardboard or paper products every second or fourth Thursday of a month, plastic bottles on Fridays, other plastics on Wednesdays, and other trash on Fridays. But I have to call the city and pay an extra fee if I want to throw away anything that's over 30cm long. I currently have a trash bag on my balcony that has been waiting for Friday since yesterday.

Relaxing and recharging in bed can be called "bed fermentation" 🌱. You are in a state of processing tiredness and stress into energy and relaxation. It turns into bed rotting when the tiredness and stress are so overwhelming you get stuck in a cycle and can't use the nutrients, it all starts to rot.

My last job was cleaning biohazards including hoarder houses, which these very much are imo. The girl in the apartment with all the roaches- people absolutely sleep and eat in places that look exactly like that, the smell is exactly as horrific as you’d imagine if not worse, and the trash is usually nothing compared to the bathroom (I’ve seen foot-high piles of human poop). In my experience it comes from incredibly severe mental illness, trauma, or otherwise crisis of some kind.

It's a way for human brains to 'be able to understand' things without worrying too much about it.
The brain wants to give it a calm spot or convince itself that the issue has been solved. That is why open endings in movies bother people.
I notice it with myself, all the time, only with things that I have been through, am I able to completely grasp the severity of issues.
For example, if someone says they got a former ISIS-slave rescued and she is now 'living in the USA with her new, loving husband" then some might romanticise that.
I was never an ISIS-slave but I know PTSD and I know she is waking up every few hours, puking and vomiting and crying and she will not be able to be romantic with that man for a long time. So I cannot make that romantic in my head.
Then there is people that come from a poor city in Poland and go to a rich country in West-Europe. Immediately, my brain thinks: "Oh, they must be so happy and grateful!'
Instead, the Polish person I am talking about, is constantly fearful about the government coming in to take their stuff. Doing checkups on money, bringing her back 'home' and putting her back into a state of constant hunger and fear.
I was unaware of her life there (when she was a child, mainly, not saying Poland is currently like this) so I romanticised it. Why make it worse in your head, would your brain think. Just fill in the blanks with positive stuff. Easier to digest.
Only after watching documentaries on war, poor countries, dictatorships, etc. will I (and people) understand a bit about it.
People always think from their perspective and from a luxurious position, if they're in one. They don't consider all the details that they don't know.
Like an acquintance that I know, who blatantly told me he would love to live in Russia, especially in towns or cities that would be under strict KGB-kinda controll.
He said he found the idea exciting, he would rebel and 'fight back' and hang posters with anti-Putin stuff on the wall.
It all seems exciting, until you realise you wouldn't have any privilege there. You would 'simply' lose everything you own or get tortured in prison for murder and get thrown out with a 'oh sorry, wrong person' kindof attitude, if they can't easily frame you for your actual illegal poster-sticking-deeds.
There is nothing romantic or enjoyable about an actual depressive situation. What he dreamed of was being the change and keeping others upbeat, which is a great thing to dream about, but you should do that without trivilazing the situation for the people going through it.
      TLDR: Yeah.
