Detective Sgt. Curtice and the case of the old package unit that wouldn't heat; solved in only a few minutes by the master sleuth. Always a pleasure to watch this man in action. 😎
The older carrier split system were nice to work on. Side ways fan easily removed and east coil access like a mini split but bigger and more room. Not sure why they stopped makin them like that. I see ones 25 yrs old still going
Good things hack installers are out there, gives us work! No plastic bushing where wires went through on original install. Quick find for you, great job.
I don't know where you are located or how cold it gets in the Winter. but wow... uninsulated duct work and even the unit itself no insulation. I would think those heat strips would barely keep a house warm if the outside temp got below 30 degrees, making the heat pump really inefficient. I can't imagine their electric bill in the dead of winter.
I've had some blowers sound like that when there isn't enough static, soon as the door is back on it returns to normal. Thing is old no doubt, but it might still have quite a bit of life in it. I know there was a wise tale that a psc motor needs to have a certain level of static pressure to run correctly.
When I replaced my entire system in 2002 (In Oklahoma City) they told me it's too cold here for heat pumps and it winds up running the backup furnace all the time so you don't save anything. I didn't get one.
@@HVACGUY thanks for the reply. Just some insight. I would think that there is a reasonable assumption that the wire could vibrate back to a short position, but perhaps what you did will be enough. Personally, I would have also taped the area that was bare. None the less good catch.
a trick is using a short piece of rubber fuel hose, just slice it lengthwise and pop the cable/wiring in. add a few zip ties if you want it to stay put. clear pvc tubing works ok also, but the multilayer hose is better for durability. don't bother with split/spiral flex loom for wiring, too thin wall and will wear through in no time flat.
What was that? After all the diagnostics you didn't even put a piece of tape on the booboo. Is it supposed to die (again)? Another "warranty" call that ain't worth the effort to at least make it through the winter? Owner is a tightwad?

Those units were designed for rooftop installations.
They have return and supply ductwork hookups on the bottom also.

good find on low volt short but blower door back on would change pressures on low side to go up if all else was normal
Nice job Curtis
Your skills are remarkable 😊
Leaving the box on those capacitors is so stupid. That one especially since they took the time to mount it. Great troubleshooting.

Excellent wiring diagnostic skills 👍👍
Nicer find Curtis
I hate units with finger-biting panels; hope newer models are better!
I hate restringing heat elements so many ways for things to go south without ever noticing it till power up

Maybe put a glob of RTV on those thermostat wires, where they enter the sheet metal?
The company I worked for back in the day sold these Bryant units. This one looks sad, now.
That heatstrip looks odd. Half of it is outside of the main airflow. It looks like it could overheat.

Heat pump 😵💫
there is one over across the street it blows out out the top inside of the front part to me thats weird this one is a carrier instead of a Bryant
Putting on Joblinks is like putting in a usb; looks simple enough to get it on the first try.
180 thumbs up
00:21:19. At 1st I thought is was an Albino Woolybear, But it has a lot less Fuzz.
The Carrier Pusher, don't be deceived, it pushes air thru the coil. Nasty in Cottonwood Country. It's a Boat Anchor.
How old is that side heat pump and did not have service or cleaned.
It's just needs a gallon of gas... as in gasoline and a match.!
Toss a couple grenades in there 😂
OK, but after you found the short you did not say what you did to keep it from happening again. Did you tape the wires or what?
I just moved it so that the rubbed spot wasn’t touching metal
You done a very good job
With this heat pump
Well Done keep up the good work mate 👍

I Hate those units.
We don't need no stinkin rake. I bet that run cap doesn't belong there.
Tell the guy to at least clean all the leafs off the unit ! Man some people are just lazy ! ☹☹☹
Tell them to cut all the trees within a 100 feet from the unit! lol
That is one ugly poorly designed system!
hate the design of those machines. Just condemned one last week
That is one of the worst built package units I've ever seen

Owner went broke due to inflation!
