I love seeing just how much Jeremy's Mandarin has progressed!
Oh hi 👋
Jeremy Lin is an NBA player, a millionaire, world famous, a harvard graduate, and an overall great guy. On top of that he is now super fluent in Chinese. Guy truly is inspirational.
It's really interesting to see that Jeremy Lin's Mandarin has improved so much, I didn't even know he's so fluent now! Thank you Jessie!
he's playing in china now, it'd be impossible for his mandarin to not improve
If he started out being able to speak it growing up even living in the US most of the time and has been over to China every summer in the last 12 years or so, and has basically stayed there for the most part since around 2019, most likely anyone would be fluent especially seeing he probably won't be leaving until he gets too old to play and seeing how much better he's getting treated as basically a celebrity over there, doubt he's ever planning on coming back besides to visit people.
Super cool of you to fix the audio :) thanks Jessie
The audio is really good now! Thanks for fixing it, Jessie!
Wow I'm from Singapore and I realized that some of the words I pronounce it with in the taiwanese way and some with a mainland Chinese pronunciation. That's odd but interesting.
11:10
There's an English phrase/idiomatic expression that can relate to these words, too:
"What's understood doesn't need to be spoken."
9:46 "Did you not see him?" had me rolling on the floor 😂
That skit at the end made me lol xD
So hard for a non Chinese like me to really understand accents that don’t make strong sh/s, zh/z or ch/s differentiation
2:15 wow she speaks so quickly
The one react channel that I like
Aside from his NBA career, Jeremy Lin is an inspiration to ABCs everywhere in terms of how much his Mandarin has improved! Makes me want to do the same.
8:29 Jeremy low-key referring to the not fouling Mike Conley was the coach's idea but Kobe got mad lol
Jeremy Lin sounds like a normal Taiwanese guy to my non-Mandarin speaking ears. Also, I couldn't notice the tone difference with your verses examples without you slowing it down and pointing it out.
First! You’re so cute! 💞
Thank you Kayla! 💞
@@ChinesewithJessie ahhhhhh! You replied! You’re welcome 😉
I always use some form of the word “telepathy” for 默契
If it’s a verbal 默契 though, like we say the same thing at the same time, we call it “jinx” or we just say “great minds…” short for the saying “great minds think alike”
man so that play where jeremy lin refused to pass the ball to kobe was indeed a communication error lol
TIL that my mandarin is all over the place between taiwanese and mainland accent lol T_T
I thought you issued this video yesterday. But looks new release here.
Same? I watched this yesterday. Unless she had to edit out copyrighted stuff? Who knows
The audio blasted somehow 😭 so I took it down, hope it's better now.
@@ChinesewithJessie thank you, Jessie. Makes perfect sense, I remember the comments about your microphone. Keep up the great work, xie xie! 🙂
@@ChinesewithJessie Ohhhhh I didn't really notice. But I had it playing on the tv so that may be why.
I noticed the loud/distorted audio, but didn’t bother to say anything b/c I’m just glad to get new Jessie content. This video will be better for people who don’t have the notification bell turned on.
His taiwan accent is so strong
In Telugu, our number for probably is three fourths. So I guess you guys have to be more sure than us to say probably.
Pretty eyes today too ;)
Jeremy Lin is without question one of the greatest player ever to played in the NBA. Even Kobe Bryant acknowledge that toward the end.
我觉得他说的挺好
Do Yao ming!
I was just curious, has anyone ever done a video of a native English speaker reacting to Jessie’s English? Her English sounds really cute to me, and although her pronunciation is perfect I can still tell she’s not a native speaker. I think it must be her rate of speech or the fact that she enunciates almost too clearly. I was just curious if anyone has ever done that.
obviously shes not a native speaker but shes fluent and comprehensible that’s all that matters
@@kiwi9660 She's Chinese from China so her native and best language is Mandarin. Not so hard to understand.
I don't think anyone's done that, since in the anglosphere it's often considered rude to talk about others' accents unless you're emphasising how good it is that they're different, because [UK history] and [US history]. Case in point: The first reply to this comment. So few anglophones will correct people in their speech. It drives me crazy - I like knowing when I've made a mistake! I've never seen an English channel dedicated to scoring accents.
What makes Jessie's English slightly accented is partially pronunciation (the θ, 'th' sound is difficult), and partially syllable structure (English can have multiple separate consonant sounds, e.g. strengths, before a vowel and after. It can have as many as 4consonants-vowel-5consonants. Mandarin has many fewer options. A maximal syllable in Mandarin has consonant-glide-vowel-final (a glide is a sound between a vowel and a consonant, and a final is basically n or ng).
But mostly it's timing and timbre. Mandarin is a syllable-timed language, meaning every syllable should take roughly the same amount of time to pronounce. This is also true of French (and many other Latin languages). In English, however, speech is stress-timed, meaning only stressed syllables have a constant duration between them, and unstressed ones are shoved into the remaining time if possible.
Then there's timbre. Probably the best way to explain this is with accents first. If you've ever heard a US news broadcaster speak and then you compare that to a UK (received pronunciation) broadcaster, you'll notice the UK one likely speaks more from his chest and further back in the mouth - his voice resonates more within his body before it exits his mouth. If you look at someone from the midwest, they'll speak further forward in the mouth and higher, barely using their chest cavity to resonate their voice. Different languages do this too. Generally it has to do with where in the mouth they make most letters. French has a lot of gutteral 'r's and back vowels, as does German, so they will have more resonance than a Spanish speaker, who will sound very nasal. On that kind of spectrum, Mandarin is closer to Spanish than French.
There are also small grammar mistakes like article usage. One thing that I think makes Jessie sound a lot more native than most is her usage of the unstressed 'schwa' sound. In many 'unimportant' bits of speech in English, a lot of the vowels turn into this sound, which is the first vowel sound in 'whether'. So instead of 'I'm going t*o* the store, an English speaker might say 'I'm going t*eh* th*eh* store' (In many British accents I'm -> 'eh'm' also)
@@alexisericson241Interesting reply. I notice when I switch speaking from one language to another it takes me a moment to readust my mouth to how sounds are made in that language. When I switch frequently and quickly between two languages like Jessie is doing here within one sentence (English, says a couple of words in chinese, goes back to English) pronunciation in one of the languages will be off by a little because your mouth hasn’t fully readjusted.
You sound like you have a background in linguistics or speech therapy. I’m more of a language learner and user so I might not be using the precise way to describe this. However, it’s very obvious between languages and dialects, you use your mouth in a different way.
😊
You should react to Miki rai and her boyfriend speaking Chinese for 24 hours.
My friends would tell me that I looked like the Black version of him :P
is it just me that Jeremy Lin kinda looks like Xu Minghao of Seventeen? haha
Jeremy Lin’s Chinese is insanely good
Agree

Copy that. Working on one right now!
his mandarin sounds abc. A lot my taiwanese friends kind of struggle with mandarin. I'm like bro. You only had to learn one more language. My cantonese is fine. My toisanese is in the trash can. My mandarin. Forget it. Been tryign to learn my whole life. If it's not gonna happen it's not gonna happen. I already speak english.
I only know spoken Hoisan dialect at best and completely fluent in American English!
The most important lesson I learned from this video is that the girl at 2:00 is really cute.
He is pretty good, but a bit sloppy. His English thought process affects his Chinese, as with happens to a lot of people in his position.
What's for dinner?
