This is excellent. Was always wondering why our Empire State Building footage hadn't been used in previous cuts. It gives non-diving viewers much more of a perspective, illustrating the magnitude of such a dive.
@billyhottie2 As far as I am aware, re-breather technology at this time was still fairly limited and still had a few problems to iron out. Also re-breathers require a whole new set of skills and can take a while to achieve. The Reason for not tethering himself to the rope is a safety issue. Entanglement at any depth is a very serious issue and can make the difference of having enough breathing gases or not. If the line is dragged or pulled from above, a fast ascent can happen causing 'The Bends'

The only thing that would be troubling for a diver is the water pressure.
