That's why I like your videos so much Ron. The close up videos. They are just fantastic. So clear and sharp. It's much easier to understand what's going on. I like the towel on the bench top too. Nothing can roll off or leave a march on the table saw. I think I'll do that too. I guess you could call that a "Jumbo Clutch Pen". What a monster! lol. Thanks Ron.
I have a similar version of this, but the barrel is 1 piece without the center band, so you turn the whole barrel as 1 piece. I think I got that kit from Woodcraft though. I've made one like the Leevalley kit in a black acrylic and the kit I got was black as well. It turned out awesome. Get the right combination of kit colors and barrel colors and you can get some really cool stuff. I made a somewhat custom pen for a guy in the Air Force last year. He wanted a pen that he could put a dog tag chain through and wear around his neck. So with a little bit of searching I picked up a black slimline kit, and unfortunately they don't make a black stylus kit...or didn't at the time, but they had a gunmetal one, which for some reason when I got everything and finished the pen you couldn't tell it was black mixed with gunmetal parts from another kit LOL. The pen turned out great, and it was made out of acrylic as well.
Hi Ron, I'm Andy, a recent subscriber to your channel. I would like to Congratulate you on making the perfect pencil for people with ostio arthritis it is perfect. A heap better than shown on the website that you give the link to! It's a real man's pencil. I'm new to woodturning and still trying to get together the basic tool's required, I can see myself having a go at making one of those or even more for different grades of lead as I also like to draw designs that I can burn onto wood later! Thanks for sharing such an informative and really interesting video. Take care. Cheers Andy Yorkshire UK
Hi Andy, Thank you for your comment. Yes, this heavy duty bold kit allows you to turn something ridiculously large. Remember --- pen turning may become addictive :)
One way to get the middle of top and bottom the same size is to remove the bushing(s) and butt the two together. Turn until they match, then put the bushings back in between.
Good morning Ron ! Yesterday I turned my first Carpenter Pencil ! Everything went fine but wen I pushed on the end so the lead would come out I got about 1 inch of lead sticking out ? I was realy frustraded and could not figure out how to retract the lead ? But after looking at your video you showed me how to fix my problem by pushing on the the tip and holding the button down on the top you solved my problem ! I could not find that information on the the instruction on how to assemble the Pencil ? Thanks for you tip ! I realy enjoy looking at all your videos ! Vic the 85 year hold woodturner have only been turning pens for about 2 years I love my Hobby ! Thanks again and have a good weekend ! Hi Victor, Re: "your video you showed me how to fix my problem" Not too often I hear this. Thanks for letting me know. Yes, turning is a great hobby ---- almost an addiction, lol. :)
Hi Edwin, I think that because I turned that particular pen so ridiculously fat, a clip may not have worked out too well. But yes, a clip pen is much handier. Thanks for commenting 🙂
survivorguy Etsy is one place to sale them. Amazon also now has a section for hand made items and as Ron said there is always the craft show/sale option. Ron
YES!! You are correct my friend. Because it was about 5 years ago, I'd forgotten. Just now viewed the video to refresh my memory, and 1 inch is about right, possibly a bit more. 👍ruclips.net/video/TvNpeAkHgIw/видео.html
The purpose of the nut center band and at the end is so the pencil won't roll off the bench. It's not decorative and this design negates that function.

Monster is right! I won't turn one that big again.
Great work, I love that pencil kit and the way you shaped the blanks came out even more surprising. Thank you.
Thank you Ozzy :)

That's a good idea alright. Just have to periodically measure with a caliper to ensure that you don't turn too small. Thanks for commenting Steve :)
Real lovely pencil, thank you Ron, take care
So beautiful pen
Thank you so much 😀
If you make another Ron, I will buy it. I need a nice new pen for my upcoming law degree :-)
🤞 😁

Hi Victor,
Re: "your video you showed me how to fix my problem"
Not too often I hear this. Thanks for letting me know.
Yes, turning is a great hobby ---- almost an addiction, lol. :)
Beautiful pencil with an interesting design.
Thanks for calling it a design. After pressing it together, I asked myself "What were you thinking?" LOL
:) It looks quite good to me.
Very nice. I think I would like to have some sort of clip on it.

Here is the link I mentioned. www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,250,43243,53758&p=70985
any tips on how to sell pens that you make
I personally do not sell my pens. You may try a craft sale. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

Is that pencil front heavy like a drafting pencil? Because if so, it may be excellent for prolonged writing sections.
This is the kit my friend :) www.leevalley.com/en/Wood/page.aspx?p=70985&cat=1,250,43243,62537

very interesting. Do you use regular sharpener to sharpen it? If you could interview or just show your brother on screen, that be sooo cool!
Thanks for reminding me about the sharpener. I'll video a short up-date today. Surprisingly, there is a sharpener :)
What were the measurements of your blanks to make the pencil so fat?
3/4 inch
@@roncalverley thanks for responding. I thought the initial board was 3/4 and you used a board slightly thicker. Maybe 1x1 x5?
