I've heard the Dave the car theif story a few times now, the whole story is better. Basically, Dave did turn his life around and became a better brother which caused friction with their dad. OP had to go no contact with them and had to be begged into meeting up in a public place where a loud arguement ensued. As they were leaving a stranger who had heard the whole thing called the dad a narcissist, the dad assaulted him so badly he was hospitalised. The OP encouraged the stranger to press charges.

When you're the entitled golden child, after you turn 18 mommy and daddy can no longer help you. You become responsible for your own actions including DUI, car theft, driving w/o license. All your parents can do is spend a lot of money on an attorney and HOPE he can do something.

Last story, op should either have the ignition and door locks rekeyed or have a hidden kill switch installed to prevent someone "borrowing " the car again. At this point even if the brother promised not to do it again I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him with my pinky!!!!!

I did wonder when the OP said about the keys being "common" why he didn't swap out the lock set to prevent the universal key being used again, rather than the tracker (or even both). I mean, it's all well and good knowing where it is, but surely it's better to stop it being so easily taken in the first place?

    -car theft
    -dui
    -driving without a license
Im sure not huge jail sentence. at least probation with community service.
and OP's parents mightve been arrested for lying to police on top of a fine.

They didn't do Dave any favors! When I was 21, I got pulled over at night because I didn't use my turn signal when turning on a deserted road with no one behind me. I was leaving my brother's house, where I had two beers and a few puffs off a joint. I insisted on a blood test, because I knew they only checked for alcohol, and I knew I'd be under the limit. The cop conveniently misplaced the results, but I was convicted in a jury trial anyway, even though the cop had the make, model, and color of my car wrong. I was just glad they didn't know I had smoked cannabis, because in 1982 Texas, that could send one to prison!
My dad didn't bail me out, I had to spend a little over 24 hours in a cell before I was released. My dad was RIGHT! I learned my lesson, never drove under the influence again, never got arrested again either! I'm 61 now, and I'm grateful that I had parents who would always yank a knot in my tail when I was screwing up.

My brother sold a radio to my Mum that she had already gifted to him before. I asked why she would pay for the same crappy radio twice.
A couple of years later he tried to sell a TV she had paid for back to her.
Thus time I stopped her, convincing her I do not understand why she is paying twice for the same TV.

that last one makes me mad as a similar thing happened to me I was visiting my brother on the other end of the USA when my dad called me and told me my car got hit. I was like how did that happen I had it parked in the driveway, well his cousin came to visit for a week and needed a way to get around and visit other relatives so he gave her the keys to my car (a 7 year old Monte Carlo) to drive. Normally if I was in town I would let her use it if they asked as long as I still had it for going to work. well she parked it on the street and some kid sideswiped it with a bike butting a deep scratch into the fender but since they did not know who did it they had no way to get the $$$ to fix it. Of course I get annoyed as I was like she did not have my permission if they would have called and said hey can cousin use your car for a day or 2 I would have been fine the fact that they said 'here he is not using it' made me mad. So next year when I went out of town I parked my next car in the garage and said NOBODY drives my car (a 5 year old low mileage Mustang). but me.

That cousin in the first story is definitely a lazy drug addict. Having a total of 5 kids from who knows how many men but doesn't work and DHS has to take them away says that she needs to be permanently sterilized so that she never brings unwanted children into the world. She more than likely used them for state welfare benefits to feed her drug habit. I hope I wasn't too vague or unclear in my feelings about that.

I wish I could find one of those decommissioned cop cars! I live off-grid down 3 miles of rough dirt road. Even though I drive very slowly, like 4 mph on that road, over time it ruins shocks, tires, and suspension of lesser cars. Cop cars have beefy suspensions and have been well-maintained.
My uncle had a 1957 Crown Vic, red and white with custom upholstery. That was car was gorgeous! I'm glad his son got it after he passed. He truly loved that car, and I hope he still drives it.
In the late 1980's, I bought an ex-cop car for $200. It was a 1965 Plymouth Fury with a 283, 4 barrel carb with dual exhaust. Best car I ever owned! It had torsion bar suspension, so it felt like it floated down the road, especially at 70-80 mph.
I got pulled over by a young cop who clocked me at 90 mph once, but he let me go because he thought his radar needed calibration since "that old heap" couldn't possibly go that fast! Of course, I agreed and told him the car previously belonged to my friend's grandma. That was true, but I guess the cop never heard the song about the little ol' lady from Pasadena!
      👵🚔
My ex made me sell that car because it got too much attention. I've always regretted letting her go. However, a few years ago, the guy who bought my car found me on Facebook. He bought my car to restore the engine and use it for dirt track racing! The body ended up getting wrecked, but he pulled the engine and put it in a different car, and is still racing with it. That made me so happy! Every time I hear the Neil Young song, "Long May You Run", I think of her, and her "chrome heart shining, in the sun..." 🥲
