An uncle of a friend of mine had a small farm in Kent,(England) in the seventies/nineties. It was about 650 acres. He had problems with odd cars that used to Park in awkward places, like in front of a gate, so he couldn't access the field with his sheep in it, or one that parked up tight against a fence down a lane so he could not pass. There were two solutions that he used that i loved. Firstly he built a stockade around one, which, having moved the gate, he covered with tarpaulin and piled tyres all over it, so it looked like a silage clamp. A silage clamp is a vast compressed pile of grass, covered with tarpaulin and held in place to preserve it. If done correctly the natural fermentation begins, this is then fed to cattle later on in the winter months. So, one unknown car hidden in plain sight. The other one was moved out of the narrow lane and put in a ramshackled old shed which had vast piles of rocks, paving slabs, old bits of lumber, old trailers, odd bits of farm machinery piled all around. Again, just looked like a huge pile of farm junk. Now both these cars had been left for more than a week before they were hidden. The local police came and asked if he knew anything about cars being on his property, but he just gave them blank looks and they went away. Nobody else ever asked and one was scrapped at a fair profit three years later. As far as i know, the one under the pile of junk is still there.
I love that. I've heard that england has some peculiar property laws compared to here in the states, like in some cases trespassing is considered a civil matter not for the police. Anyway, I being this up because I guess outsiders parking on farmland, or squatting are pretty big problems in the more rural areas. There was a story I had heard last year where a farmer (somewhere in England) had gotten fed up with the spring chickens flocking to a hiking trial across from the farm, and using the farm as parking. One guy had camped out in a camper on the farm for three days, and after telling him to move and being verbally assaulted many times, even trying to get the police involved failed. After that the farmer took his tractor and flipped the camper. The owner tried suing him for all sorts of reasons including trying to kill him, but thankfully the farmer won that.
1st story: Never assume anything 2nd story: When my parents divorced, he started a relationship with another woman that lasted for over thirty years until he died but they never married each other in all that time that they were together. Me, my brothers and sisters HATED this woman with the fire of a thousand suns but couldn't do a damn thing about it. He owned his own business which his children worked for and she, who never worked a day of her life while she was with him, felt entitled enough to think that she ran the company with him and he let her do it doing things like picking up the cash and checks and making deposits and such but doing no physical work for the company When he died, she felt entitled to receive a share of the business along with his children but he never put her name on any paperwork, deeds or anything else. She got the house they lived in, their cars and furniture but that was it She fought us for years to receive her share of the business but never got anything What she DID get was too much in our opinion I haven't seen or heard from her in over 20 years now and good riddance 3rd story: Don't park your car where you're not supposed too
How do you not know who owned the car? It has a license plate. Universities do not give out diplomas without all bills paid, including parking tickets. I have experience with this . My son thought it would be cheaper to pay fines when he got them instead of buying a parking pass. It would have worked had he paid the fines instead of throwing them in the glove box.
I had to give the college I went to all the details on any vehicle I planned to drive on campus. We were issued a decal with an identity number on it, that had to be in the window (can’t remember where) or it would be towed.
First story.... If I was OP's boss, I'd have been less polite to that store manager. He'd likely be having to get another company to do the job. Second story.... change the locks on the doors, and have a trusted person house-sit. Third story.... should have towed and impounded it far sooner.
If I were OP's boss in the first story I'd be thanking the manager for looking out for my gear. Some random guy you've never seen before in no uniform, not even a branded polo or something is rummaging through a truck looking for tools. Manager was quick to make judgements but when you look at the reality of the situation in regards to crime, better to be safe than sorry, right?
Third story: If they'd had the car towed, all towing companies, I believe, are required to notify the police of the tow and give them the make, model, and license number (most of the time, even the VIN).* With that info, it's no problem finding out who the owner is. *The do this so if the owner calls it in as stollen, the police can say "No sir, it was towed for illegal parking".
I worked private security and a guy kept parking his motorcycle in a stripped spot next to a handicap spot I gave him 6 tickets with photo evidence until I finally towed it. (Also they had specific motorcycle parking he was just entitled) So his supervisor calls our office saying he has an employee that his motorcycle was stolen I said I towed it and I hear the guy in the back around explode with anger. His supervisor asks to come to his office to talk so as soon as I get there the employee just starts cussing me out and saying I had no right, he also tried saying he never got a single ticket (not realizing we take pictures of the ticket on it not to mention we have cameras) The supervisor isn't even saying a word he's letting his employee talk like that to me. The union rep who was also in there and did nothing finally said to the employee they'll get the company to pay for the inbound and towing fee. I walked out and said I'm done. I go back to my office and then forward all evidence that it was his fault all pictures and copies of every ticket to his supervisors boss, because of the evidence the company refused to pay the fees. The next day since the company refused to pay the employee comes to the security office and tells me he's calling the police on me and don't go too far! I just laugh and said okay. The police get there and tell him there's nothing they can do because it's private property and they have every right to enforce their parking policies. The guy never parked there again and his supervisor and union rep were chewed out by allowing him to speak how he did to me and they apologized to me.
Last Story. It is one of those things. Around here if someone mentions suing/lawsuit or contacting lawyer. A Couple things happen around here, First of, Employees are told to say, Sorry but due possible lawsuit we can no longer Talk anymore and have to ask you to Please leave the store/business until your Lawyer contacts our Lawyers. Which is basically saying they are Temporary Banned from the Store Until they then spend the Money to get a Lawyer and Contact the Stores/Business's Lawyers. Even then, the Store's / Business's Lawyer would just tell them that they are now banned from entering the Parking Lot, Store/Business. I Do know there is a couple People in our town that have actually been banned from all the Grocery stores in the area. Where they end up having to Drive 25+ miles away to the Next nearest Grocery Store.
Either that or they give their shopping list to someone that isn't Banned who then shops for them... I had to do that for a Friend once, they weren't Banned from the store but they were recovering from a serious accident and as a result, had severe Mobility Issues until the casts (Multiple - left arm from palm to elbow, left leg from foot to hip as well as a hip cast to help keep their pelvis together while the pins and plates fully bonded, he can't go near a Metal Detector now without setting the damn thing off...😄😁😆😅😂🤣) came off and they were finished with Physical Tyranny...it took a few months before they were Mobile enough do resume doing their own shopping...
There was a Pakistani student at the school I attended who paked a car illegally at the student parking lot. Anyone who parked there needed to buy a permit; this permit allowed the car to be parked at a specific bay, and only that bay. This individual had the bright idea that he was exempt from all rules while outside of Pakistan. Furthermore this car did not belong to him. So, by Mideast logic, he did not have to pay the fines, as the car did not belong to him. The owner of the car also should not pay, as he had no control over his car at that time. The parking lot officer finally had enough. The car was towed and confiscated. I do not know what happened afterward.
Third story: In a former life, I worked as a tow truck driver, and one place I worked had contracts for towing from a college campus. In the several times I went there to remove cars whose owners had not chosen wisely, I determined that students at that college couldn't read. They honestly thought that "NO PARKING FIRE LANE" meant "reserved for (whatever the hell their names were)." The stupidity and self-entitlement were insane.
When my grandmother died, my brother brought a uhaul and in the dead of night broke into her house and stole everything. There wasn't a crumb left. Neighbors watched but did nothing. We found out the next day. Unfortunately my sister the executor was weak and refused to press charges.
Car tow: in the UK, it would be illegal for the college to talk to the parent, as a matter of data privacy law. The parent would need to present a written letter of authority from the student, before they even acknowledge that the person is a student at the college. And then the student would not be allowed to access college facilities until their fines had been paid. Universities here have Royal Charters, and their regulations carry the force of law.
Wouldn't the Student have to present the Written Authorization allowing the School to talk to the 3rd Party? If the 3rd Party presented the paper, how would the School know it wasn't forged?
S1: A prime example of why uniforms are a _good_ thing! Especially if the workplace is on-site. At minimum a T-shirt with a logo on it. I remember a story of someone working for a fire alarm company. S3: Most colleges I've visited require parking permits, and the permits are tied to the vehicle, i.e. the school would have a record of who the vehicle belongs to, and be able to use that information. I would have loved to see it go to court. Would the judge be able to keep a strait face?
Last story - 20+ tickets and they still hadn't towed the kids car? The local community college near me has a better parking enforcement than this school.
Morning Redwheel. Coffee ☕ in hand, and ready!! Was waiting for new post notification :). Last time I heard a rich person parking on anothers property, costed them about 40k to get it removed. They parked a back hoe on their neighbors property during spring thaw, despite being told not to. A nice size river runs through the property. That spring, the owner of the back hoe was horrified to find the ground had gotten to soft, and only the scoop was showing above ground. Cab and all was below the mud, and being inexperienced, he rented a second one to lose it in the same fashion. Costed about 50k to rescue them alone. Don't know what the repairs costed though.
@@luciferpetrenkoff5040 I'd be more worried if your mom was ok. Trying to take my wife's latte, well let's say she's broken people's fingers for less lol. Mine actually. All joking aside, it was an accident. Was an unknown effect of a medication, and my kids joke about it now a days, especially when it comes to who gets the last Starbucks caramel in the fridge. Have a great day LP
Last story... based on the contract signed, the 'buyer' still owes OP $1K. It was still a legally binding contract and just because the buyer didn't take the car, it's still on him to pay OP the remainder.
That first story doesn't sound like malicious compliance to me... Just, mildly frustrating. I'm glad they got a free lunch though. Considering things didn't have the chance to escalate, I'd have been chill with getting a free lunch. Glad OP had a decent resolution to the situation and hopefully that manager learned a valuable lesson about jumping to conclusions and the importance of verifying your assumptions.
Why couldn't they tow the car much sooner? Tow it once I bet you wouldn't have continued having problems. Obviously still would have had the same encounter but still would have done it after 3 tickets not 20!
Hell yes! Just due to Liability Concerns, I would have had the car towed the 2nd time I found it Illegally Parked in the Fire Lane...Just so an Emergency Vehicle wasn't delayed getting to a Student having a Medical Emergency or a Firetruck responding to a Fire (as happened in the story)... EAS was actually VERY lucky the Student who's car was on fire didn't Sue him for half of the Damages caused by the fire due to his delaying the Firetrucks arrival... I would have...in less than a Heart Beat...
