Mercedes are well known for their larger, auto vehicles. So how do they fare with a small manual hatchback. Well..... mixed results I would say. The interior is mostly nice but with some questionable design choices and cost cutting in the wrong places. The exterior styling on higher models is good but just like other mercedes models over the years, the base and low models suffer from a less than optimal look.
How does it stack up against other hatchback models? It's not too bad at all really. Performance seemed to be lacking at first with a surprising power increase up at 4,000 rpm. I was not expecting this from a turbocharged engine. The manual gearbox reminded me of of older cars with small cylinder capacity giving that jerky feel with gear changes. It may have improved with practice.
During our in depth review we carried out an interior look over, UK road test and talked over some things I liked and some that I didn't.
Pros: low cabin noise, nice seating, good handling, reasonable performance at high revs.
Cons: Cheap in all the wrong places, mismatched styling choices, weird placement of essential equipement.
