  • Hi! As a SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) graduate, I just wanted to share my experience to perspective students as well as give some context to my channel and why I am where I am now as a fashion designer. I wanted to give some pros and cons to the school for anyone weighing their options because I know I watched a lot of these videos when I was school shopping. If you have any more questions feel free to comment or DM me and I'd be more than happy to give you the deets. But this is probably the only time I'll ever talk about school this way, I hope you understand.

I 100% agree with scad feeling like a business rather than a school but I feel like nowadays all colleges have that vibe because they no longer encourage students to learn rather than to pay. I wish schools focused on actually teaching. I found this really helpful, I am a scad freshman (technically soph cause I am 1 qt ahead) and so far I am enjoying it but I have zero motivation due to virtual learning; we get more assignments cause of it, or so I have heard from older students who have experienced in-person pre-covid. Hopefully, once we go back to "normal" everything will get sorted out.

I’m glad you found it helpful and I’m sure things will level out soon. I’ve heard from people still there that assignments have been excessive lately so hopefully once you’re back in person it’ll get better. I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far though!!

I graduated from MassArt so not a Scad grad here. However, I have been employed in product design and illustration for over 20 yrs and Scad does do a good job making good relationships with employers and pushed their grads in the marketplace. So the business pushiness seems to work in terms of getting grads employed.

Whewww I’ve been literally trying to find out what’s my creative niche. I felt like I was creative but couldn’t identify with anything in particular but I felt in my spirit. I stumble upon film/tv major as I thought about my new content creator hobby I just started. Now I see how this field is so creative in itself and all the many things you can create is amazing. I looked at nearby film/tv/media programs but nothing was as creative, diverse and multidimensional as the programs at SCAD! This is inspired me and pushed me to jump into this journey! Thank you

I really value this very open opinion on this as I just applied to the MA in Fashion program & I've been going back and forth if i really want this but i know i do im just self sabotaging my abilities!
I Can totally relate to this because had the same feeling when I was attending FIT. I didn't get to enjoy the amenities that the school offered because I always had a plethora of assignments especially being in the Technical Design program. I didn't live on campus therefore I commuted into the city and right back to a job I needed to help sustain the overall cost of being in that program. It was burnt out to no avail but at the end of it all i felt accomplished and nourished knowledgeably to take on career world after graduating. I know scad will provide the same when I get accepted and graduate :)

Hey, I'm taking my second year in scad and I'm feeling that I'm wasting money into this school to learn about writing reports rather than cartooning and sequential art. Should I switch school or something, cuz I'm borderline depressed with the grades I get and the progress on my art skills (which slowly turned into doodoo)?

I understand feeling like the progress of your work is suffering because of the timeframe of due dates. Sorry you’re feeling that way. Maybe take a quarter or two off to explore other options and save money. Look into other programs at different schools but please look into the school’s transfer policy before you withdraw and check your credit hours to make sure you’re making the best decision. I really recommend finding a mentor or looking into internships if you want to supplement learning with hands on opportunities. Hope this helped 🤎

I’m a 2019 graduate of SCAD I graduated with a BFA in Animation and Illustration. I’m just gonna be short with my experience/advice. I believe that its ran like a business, with them weeding out the “weakest” artists who cannot keep up with their demands. The required classes can be a bit dull, but are good to connect with other majors. However once you’re in your major’s core classes the environment (in person) have the most connections and way to help feed your creativity. The teachers are also there to help you as much as possible and are great for advice. I personally do not learn best online as I’m a hands on / face to face person. I was also working part time at a restaurant almost the entire time I was there. My cousin is still there, and she’s like me who works best face to face and is also working part time. I know she is personally struggling to get by because shes no longer in her best learning environment and she lost a bunch of avenues of getting her creative juices going as well as connections she may have gotten from the face to face avenues. Honestly If I could go back in time I would go back, but If I were to go back during these times I wouldn’t since I would need the face to face environment. You may be a face to face learner like my cousin and I. So my advice is to either push through and attempt to see who is available from your classes and as best as you can try to get your creative juices flowing better or to wait until you can return to campus and get that sort of environment. I personally believe that the school has a good environment, but they want a lot of results in short turn around times which makes it hard to get out your best work without sacrificing sleep. From what my professors told me the turn around times are closer to “crunch times”or “rush jobs” in the industry. (I personally cannot speak from experience, since when I graduated I graduated right before Covid hit so a bunch of potential opportunities have slipped through my grasp.) As for the grades, don’t think too harshly on them no one cares about grades once you graduate. I personally would aim for an A or a B, but if its a class that is not required I would still try my best, but I would be okay if I ended up with a C in the end. It’ll surprise you on what skills you might end up using outside of school in a job setting and sometimes using those tidbits from the non core classes can help you gain a leg-up in the end. Just think of those classes as tools and don’t feel that a grade defines what you are capable of. Do the best that you can do and do what you think is best for you.

@@Samsocks1996 Thanks for the extremely long reply, sharing of your experience. Unlike you, I'm an international student so I was told that grades are necessary for me to keep my f1 status and stuff. Though I have no plans to stay nor work in the US for long after my graduation, I'm still quite worried about my grades as I might need them to reapply for a Visa. It's not just the grades that are affecting me, I've not been able to spend any of my time improving my anatomy, perspectives and colouring skills since everything is so rushed. I have had a plan to submit to Nutaku an English doujinshi but have failed to do so since I have lost much of my skills. It's not that I'm lazy or anything, it's just I'm too sleep-deprived to do anything on weekends and is usually stressing about next weeks' homework. I really wanna die tbh.

@@huyhoangviet5966 Sorry that my replies are long, I tend to type like I speak.
Ahh, true, I cannot speak from international experience, but yes I did hear that the grades are more important if they are international. So in this please do not do what I did then. A good way to improve with anatomy is to use references or make your own as well as drawing from life. There is a lot of videos that can help you out with technique right here on RUclips and watch them in your spare time or (like I did) while you are eating. Sometimes its the way someone phrases how they are doing something or you watch to see what they are doing. Everyone has their own niche that they fall into, but look at some videos even if they are not exactly your way of drawing or medium. Two RUclipsrs that you might be able to learn from their videos are Aaron Blaise and James Gurney, both have worked in the industry and both have good technical skills when it comes to drawing/painting in several mediums. Also no need to die, just take it one step at a time or one project at a time. For me at least with balancing so many things I usually took an hour to do whatever I wanted to do everyday (a few example of what I would do is catch up on anime, read a book, or work on my own personal work) and every 2 hours I would step away from one project and took about 10 minutes away and went back into my project. This helped me notice things that I needed to reevaluate and it let me not think about the project for a few minutes. I tended to focus on the assignment at hand before I started to even think about the next one, until I'm about 90% done would I start thinking about the next project. That tactic helped me at least with not getting as many burnouts with my work. Also I should note I am one of those people who actually does okay with loosing sleep so long as I got at least 4 hours everyday without too many all-nighters which doesn't work well with everyone, you just have to try to see what works best with you in that aspect. Also if you feel overwhelmed with everything just take a few minutes to "breathe" as it sometimes helps to talk things out with your classmates, peers, and or friends about your current project and they could give you a new perspective on what your doing an/or they could help you get past your current dilemma or you can talk about other things and get your mind off of your current project for a few minutes. Feel free to ignore some of my advice since what I'm suggesting to you takes up time as well, but it helps with the mental stress of it all.
