2020 ATL SCAD grad here: my advice for ANYONE thinking of coming to SCAD is go to community college first. Let me explain. SCAD is stupid expensive and you still have to do general education. I started at a community college and transferred after getting my associate's in general studies. And most of my classes transferred. By the time I came to SCAD, I got to start courses based on my major: Sequential art. By then, I understood how to get through college classes. It's obviously not quite the same as SCAD will give you too much work as if you only have one course. But it's a good start for those coming out of high school. Try for general studies at your local school and you can really try different courses you might be interested in as careers. If you decide to do this, and then you come to SCAD, you might realize even your smaller colleges can teach you just as well. Do your research before you come. Try one course for your first quarter. (I did community college first, and I'm leaving SCAD with less than 30K in student loans. I'm VERY lucky. Also get a job. It'll really help.) As for the advisors... they are absolute garbage. All of them have different titles but none of them know answers for anything. And the high percentage to get into a job with your degree? Yeah, that's based on the people who answered that survey. It doesn't include the many other students I know who haven't gotten a job at all. I love SCAD because of the professors. They are really what makes SCAD, and Paula Wallace doesn't pay them enough. And I know I can email my teachers even after having graduated. Honestly though... you could learn a lot of this info on youtube or skillshare or in a masterclass.

As someone who goes to MECA, I fully agree with your suggestion to go to community college first! I didn't, and I REEEEALLY wish I had! Just make sure you check the requirements with the school you want to transfer to, and make sure the classes you plan to take will fulfill them so you aren't wasting time and money! Also take some art classes, they won't be the same as at an art school, but trust me, you'll want a break from your studio classes! And take art history if you can, because it can get BRUTAL.
My son is at SCAD now, but got his Associates at a smaller college first. He's said it helped him on so many fronts. Saved money. Learned a little about college first. And got those freshman classes out of the way in a gentler environment. He said starting SCAD at 20 vs 18 is completely different. He was much better prepared for the workload being a few years older. Only suggestion is to really understand what courses transfer and what don't. He took several music courses he was interested in that didn't transfer and ended up not helping. Make sure the courses you take matter and are accepted by SCAD. The more that transfer, the more money and time you save.

This is how SCAD works. If you have a problem and email someone about it they will tell you to email someone else or a different department. This will continue as you jump from person to person as they shove you off to someone else and no one will actually help you.
Honestly I wish I watched this sooner. SCAD has been my dream school since I was 12 but trying to afford it now is killing me. I've had to rely on my sister's credit card for this first quarter and she'll never know how immensely grateful I am to her. Still though, I'm trying to finish this payment plan thing without hurting my sister's credit shits tough but I think it'll be worth it. I know what I want and have for years. And with all the opportunities SCAD has I think it's where I'm supposed to be. SCAD specializes in my major and getting students into the artistic work force which is competitive as hell. So I guess I'll have to be in debt at this point. I'm glad Julia has made the decision best for her and I wish everyone the best.
Scad is very expensive and they really over work you. I recommend just going to a regular school. As a senior animation major with a focus on storytelling and story concept I didn’t even know how to animate or do any 3d stuff. I learned that online. My schedules were always full and I never got the chance to pick a class I really wanted to do. It was to the point I did 4 studio classes cause they screwed up with my schedule. It killed me. Don’t do what I did. On the other hand there are some great teachers and students I’ve met and really became close to them. But isn’t that just like any other school? The meal stuff that they did in atl was bad. Usually burnt or raw and never the greatest food. Plus they don’t have ice cream. Like is scad so poor that they can’t even afford ice cream? It was to the point I was starving myself. I didn’t even go past the half point of meals and I picked the smallest meal plan I could get. Scad has some issues and they really need to learn how to fix these problems. They made a new building but it’s already too crowded. I did learn something. How to deal with lots of work. How to deal with students who always procrastinate in your group. How to deal with teachers who didn’t understand about accommodations.

Idk my mental health is shot but I'm trying to finish at least my first year maybe. I wish I could hear from some alumni who ya know don't still work for acad who could give an opinion. Plus the absences thing is dumb af.

When seeking advice online about scad I was told not to attend unless I have rich parents that can afford it. Then I was told that about every art school. I’m not sure what to do becuase my parents can afford it but I feel so guilty knowing how much money is actually being used on ME at the school. I almost feel like I’m wasting my parents money
Maylin Montgomery if it's something you really want (studying at an art school and earning your degree there), then it shouldn't be a waste. but i totally understand what you mean. trust your instincts and whatever you decide to do, things will turn out fine
Maylin, if it is something you KNOW you want to do, go for it. I also struggled getting any money from my parents as our home isn't as wealthy as people assumed since I went to SCAD. I'd recommend getting a part time job to help, and try your best to get scholarships. I didn't really get scholarships besides the honors scholarship (which you get every quarter if you have a 3.0 or higher). But coming in, you can earn quite a few, so I'd look into those. Otherwise, maybe go to a community college first and transfer in. That's what I did and it went actually pretty smoothly. I worked a part time job as I was in community college, so I'm leaving SCAD with less than 30k in student loans. If you have any questions about scad, I'm also open to answering questions.

And no I think you covered a good portion of what incoming students should know before applying. The meal plans are ridiculous in a lot of ways, including price, availability, and just the quality of food. They honestly should have more options if the price is going to be as high as it is.
I’m in a similar boat. I’m going to see if enough scholarships are available to me for every school I want. If that can pay me throughout four years of course I’ll go. HOWEVER, if I don’t get enough, I’m planning on taking two years of community college and then transferring for my last two years! Perhaps this could be a plan you could consider. If art is something you’re set on going into, there are many options you can go to to to help pay, regardless for the school (and it’s just a generally good thing to consider for any type of college)
Hi! I just graduated from SCAD in Film/Tv at the Savannah Campus. I am so sorry that you had this experience. I know how hard it can be and the prices can really be stressful especially when it seems like it is such a breeze for everyone else. I have been living off student loans so I really know the struggle. I never lived on campus or had to pay for any kind of meal plan though. I would recommend for anyone going to find some roommates and get an apartment. At least if you go to Savannah. It is so much cheaper to find some roommates and rent. Although, I have never lived in ATL so I know the prices are probably different but with renting you do not have to pay for an expensive meal plan that you will not get anything out of. I transferred into SCAD after getting my general education classes out of the way. I went ahead and got my A.A degree which gave me time to decide what I really wanted to do as well as save up. However, not all of the credits transfer over if you get the A.A degree but it still saves you money & time. It so much cheaper to take a math/English at a state college than to take a math/English at SCAD. I would highly recommend anyone who might not know what they want to do or might not have all the funds to try transferring in. I still was able to spend 3 years there and I do not feel like I missed out on anything. Any-who, I hope wherever you go ends up being the best for you!! I hope you write that book girl!!!
No idea how I go here or why i stayed,but throughout the entire video you where very level headed,and In many ways had a clearly positive outlook about your future.I really feel proud on your behalf on these steps taken as I have often told people(especially parents)"university is not for everyone".I have seen so many people waste cash on university ,living in excess while i thought "you fools ,the deadline will come dont treat this like an expensive toy",I truly do not like how our society can be so cool with children going thier whole lives to school,but panic when said children just ask for some time to think(gap years are still frowned upon in my country),instead they are pushed into a program for"security".I truly believe you made a good decision and even if you do come to regret it,I say"the world is yours",so press on,be awesome. I am a scad student (international study). I think Julia said the real situation of all the SCAD students, the system of scad is extremely terrible. I also needed to deal with a lot of problems that "SCAD" gave me. I would say to be a university student, what we can learn from the classes is limited. It is because if we truly want to learn something and become professional artists, self-education is very important as well. Personally, my major is painting, but I will learn Graphic Design from Linkedin as well. Also, I will keep finding my professors and ask them questions. I agree with you that sometime SCAD could be a playground; on the other side, we are artists and we have our creativity and ability to change the playground to be our learning place. Keep learning and absorbing things. No one can stop us to learn and improve. No matter how worse is the circumstance, we still can find a way out and we can grow up and become much more mature. Keep going, Julia! I believe you can find your own way as well. :)
@@jahnavik6125 Actually it is very hard to get scholarship in SCAD, and you need to maintain a high GPA per quarter to maintain the scholarship that SCAD has been giving you at the beginning. I think $40,000 is a high amount, and it should be for 4 years. Everyone's scholarship could be very different as well, it depends on your interview, GPA, rewards, and other conditions.

We just toured SCAD for SCAD Day in Atlanta and they made such a big deal about all the departments collaborating together to do different projects that get published and used by big companies. One professor/instructor said the students have opportunities to collaborate on specific projects each 10 weeks. Then the students get hired by these big companies. Is any of that true? They had so many things to show off during SCAD Day.

I made a video about my grievances with SCAD. It's so disappointing how the school handles cases. I've experienced having to be handed off to person after person just to be heard and have my problem resolved. It's an unfortunate truth of not just this school but many around the country. If I had the means, I would have left already.
It is a scam and the culture is aggressive and psychological abusive. thought there for 5 years. It's hell and they don't care about the students at all.

You hit on my longtime perception of SCAD, that for 80+% of its students it's basically an overpriced summer arts camp. It will one day, after the passing of its current president (and co-founder), move more toward quality over quantity. Until then, there are many other arts schools where the same camaraderie can be found and just as good (and likely better) skill-sets can be obtained with far less debt incurred. Luckily the arts industry is perhaps the one professional sector that has not been afflicted by useless academic 'credentialitis'. You're going to be judged by your portfolio of work (professional or not) not how many diplomas you can produce.
Michael Vincent Parks i was definitely learning basics i had never learned before since i am a self taught artist. (my classes were design 1, drawing 1, and intro to communications/speech). but it was all very fun and almost too easy sometimes. im not one to procrastinate so everything seemed simple. i cant say that for the whole of scad because i was only there one quarter. but based on what i was doing, it was all play and there wasnt going to be much to show for it besides a degree (which id have to stick around long enough to get anyway)
This may be a personal question, but what scholarships did you get? I’m poor and My intention is to go to SCAD but I’m very unpleased with my awarded amounts. I knew it was expensive, but I expected my family financial status to mean something.
Nia Curry id have to check to be sure but i think with all my scholarships (state-wide + specific to the school) i was still paying around 8,000 per quarter. not sure on exact amounts tho. hope this helps!

Jennifer Valente If you’re already not sure you’re going to like the program go to a community college or a state school/public university that offers the major you like. You should want to major in what you want to major in even if the professor will bore the shit out of you! 😂 (that’s my motto) Fashion isn’t just one of those majors you can be half in and half out about, you have to want to do it because it’s very time consuming, and you’re working around the clock to produce outstanding pieces. Watch other fashion majors videos and why they dropped out or why they stuck out a program because fashion is hard!
Jennifer Valente and yes you have to have a meal prep plan if you’re a freshman in college in on campus housing. There’s probably only a few exceptions to that rule. You have two quarter in one semester, making there be 4 quarters a school year. Most art schools have what’s called a “Foundation Year” where you take some core classes (math, art history*, science, English*) and you take classes that apply to the majors you chose(that’s why you usually apply for two or three majors, unlike other school where you apply for one major UNLESS you’re double majoring) . Foundation year is like an undecided year where they hone in on basic skills like for ex. drawing anatomy.
Jennifer Valente I would definitely look on different campus’ websites to see what best fits you and your needs! Research before you go, if you can visit please do! You’ll see some campus’ false advertise a lot of this stuff. Some are very transparent. And if you visit in person during the school year and during the summer you’ll see a different in the environment and that’ll be a good deciding factor as well.
Jennifer Valente It’s not about if you can afford your education (most people always want to take that into account) because most of us can’t, especially not by ourselves. But it’s about your own personal needs, not WANTS needs. If you make the wrong choice just know you can always transfer somewhere else! Your education isn’t a race to the finish line.. make sure you’re doing what’s best for you. For example I personally didn’t want to take out student loans to go to school so I went to a school that fit my needs.
Jahnavi K hey! i think it depends on how they word it in your scholarship letter. mine said a total and then it said an amount of like 9k per year. so it should say the years worth AND the 4 years worth in the letter! at least this is how it was for me. hope this helps!!
I truly wanted to stay in SCAD but the price on everything, I can't keep up, my parents wouldn't keep up. If i did stay here, it'll just destroy their salary. I received no scholarships to prepare for it either and it made me conclude that I have to drop out. I'm already a talented artist but I wouldn't call myself professional just yet. Especially I hardly did animation which is I want to do. My options are either taking online classes or go to my state's college. For the first time on my life, I have no plan what happens next and at the moment I feel lost.
Current scad student here... i am thinking about switching over to full sail because it has more in regards to their writing program. I dont know if i want to make a switch but need help 😭😭😭. It is getting too much and I need another option

CheyNobi aw dang. i write novels too and was disappointed in scads selection in that department. i say if Full Sail has better options, go for it!! but ultimately it has to be what you want. no one else can make that decision for you
I'd recommend watching 'Scam Art Schools | Artists Beware' video by Catherine Grafffam that talks about predatory & sketchy art schools, with Full Sail being one of them. I personally have looked into Full Sail, but the tuition, acceptance rate, and graduation rate all seem like red flags to me. If I had to do writing, I would probably go to an in-state public school's English major or their Communications major.

I think ultimately you wanted to give up on the school. The meal plan was just a good excuse to do so and I can understand that sometimes our traumas prevent us from moving forward. You didn’t want to invest the money on something you weren’t sure about. You couldn’t find meaning in what you were doing. It’s strange because while I do understand that a bad system can stop people from overcoming challenges, I hope you know that sometimes being an artist means breaking the rules for what you want. Not running away because the system is broken. It’s ok to be scared of loans and being in debt; I totally understand but the strength to take on those risks are important too especially for women.

Hi! I just graduated from SCAD in Film/Tv at the Savannah Campus. I am so sorry that you had this experience. I know how hard it can be and the prices can really be stressful especially when it seems like it is such a breeze for everyone else. I have been living off student loans so I really know the struggle. I never lived on campus or had to pay for any kind of meal plan though. I would recommend for anyone going to find some roommates and get an apartment. At least if you go to Savannah. It is so much cheaper to find some roommates and rent. Although, I have never lived in ATL so I know the prices are probably different but with renting you do not have to pay for an expensive meal plan that you will not get anything out of.
I transferred into SCAD after getting my general education classes out of the way. I went ahead and got my A.A degree which gave me time to decide what I really wanted to do as well as save up. However, not all of the credits transfer over if you get the A.A degree but it still saves you money & time. It so much cheaper to take a math/English at a state college than to take a math/English at SCAD. I would highly recommend anyone who might not know what they want to do or might not have all the funds to try transferring in. I still was able to spend 3 years there and I do not feel like I missed out on anything.

Holy shit the meal plan situation happened to me THIS QUARTER. They totally do it on purpose and thankfully I changed it before they charged me.

No idea how I go here or why i stayed,but throughout the entire video you where very level headed,and In many ways had a clearly positive outlook about your future.I really feel proud on your behalf on these steps taken as I have often told people(especially parents)"university is not for everyone".I have seen so many people waste cash on university ,living in excess while i thought "you fools ,the deadline will come dont treat this like an expensive toy",I truly do not like how our society can be so cool with children going thier whole lives to school,but panic when said children just ask for some time to think(gap years are still frowned upon in my country),instead they are pushed into a program for"security".I truly believe you made a good decision and even if you do come to regret it,I say"the world is yours",so press on,be awesome. I am a scad student (international study). I think Julia said the real situation of all the SCAD students, the system of scad is extremely terrible. I also needed to deal with a lot of problems that "SCAD" gave me. I would say to be a university student, what we can learn from the classes is limited. It is because if we truly want to learn something and become professional artists, self-education is very important as well. Personally, my major is painting, but I will learn Graphic Design from Linkedin as well. Also, I will keep finding my professors and ask them questions. I agree with you that sometime SCAD could be a playground; on the other side, we are artists and we have our creativity and ability to change the playground to be our learning place. Keep learning and absorbing things. No one can stop us to learn and improve. No matter how worse is the circumstance, we still can find a way out and we can grow up and become much more mature. Keep going, Julia! I believe you can find your own way as well. :)

When you get a certain scholarship for example $40,000,is it renewed every year or is it the total amount for 4 years
@@jahnavik6125 Actually it is very hard to get scholarship in SCAD, and you need to maintain a high GPA per quarter to maintain the scholarship that SCAD has been giving you at the beginning. I think $40,000 is a high amount, and it should be for 4 years. Everyone's scholarship could be very different as well, it depends on your interview, GPA, rewards, and other conditions.

We just toured SCAD for SCAD Day in Atlanta and they made such a big deal about all the departments collaborating together to do different projects that get published and used by big companies. One professor/instructor said the students have opportunities to collaborate on specific projects each 10 weeks. Then the students get hired by these big companies. Is any of that true? They had so many things to show off during SCAD Day.

Their marketing makes the place look so fun and promising but reviews are so mixed. Did you know anyone who was successful in getting internships or job placement like the school advertises?
** hi! yes, it's sad because they do make it look very rewarding. i can't think of anyone off the top of my head who has a job because of SCAD. ive only heard that percentile they seem so proud of haha. hope this helps!

It's so disappointing how the school handles cases. I've experienced having to be handed off to person after person just to be heard and have my problem resolved. It's an unfortunate truth of not just this school but many around the country. If I had the means, I would have left already.
It is a scam and the culture is aggressive and psychological abusive. thought there for 5 years. It's hell and they don't care about the students at all.

You hit on my longtime perception of SCAD, that for 80+% of its students it's basically an overpriced summer arts camp. It will one day, after the passing of its current president (and co-founder), move more toward quality over quantity. Until then, there are many other arts schools where the same camaraderie can be found and just as good (and likely better) skill-sets can be obtained with far less debt incurred. Luckily the arts industry is perhaps the one professional sector that has not been afflicted by useless academic 'credentialitis'. You're going to be judged by your portfolio of work (professional or not) not how many diplomas you can produce.
What are some better arts colleges that give better education for less than SCAD?

Michael Vincent Parks i was definitely learning basics i had never learned before since i am a self taught artist. (my classes were design 1, drawing 1, and intro to communications/speech). but it was all very fun and almost too easy sometimes. im not one to procrastinate so everything seemed simple. i cant say that for the whole of scad because i was only there one quarter. but based on what i was doing, it was all play and there wasnt going to be much to show for it besides a degree (which id have to stick around long enough to get anyway)

This may be a personal question, but what scholarships did you get? I’m poor and My intention is to go to SCAD but I’m very unpleased with my awarded amounts. I knew it was expensive, but I expected my family financial status to mean something.
Nia Curry id have to check to be sure but i think with all my scholarships (state-wide + specific to the school) i was still paying around 8,000 per quarter. not sure on exact amounts tho. hope this helps!

I have a question do we have to join a meal prep plan? I’m thinking about applying, this is my senior year in highschool but I don’t want to regret paying a lot of money for me not to like it . Jennifer Valente If you’re already not sure you’re going to like the program go to a community college or a state school/public university that offers the major you like. You should want to major in what you want to major in even if the professor will bore the shit out of you! 😂 (that’s my motto) Fashion isn’t just one of those majors you can be half in and half out about, you have to want to do it because it’s very time consuming, and you’re working around the clock to produce outstanding pieces. Watch other fashion majors videos and why they dropped out or why they stuck out a program because fashion is hard!
Jennifer Valente and yes you have to have a meal prep plan if you’re a freshman in college in on campus housing. There’s probably only a few exceptions to that rule. You have two quarter in one semester, making there be 4 quarters a school year. Most art schools have what’s called a “Foundation Year” where you take some core classes (math, art history*, science, English*) and you take classes that apply to the majors you chose(that’s why you usually apply for two or three majors, unlike other school where you apply for one major UNLESS you’re double majoring) . Foundation year is like an undecided year where they hone in on basic skills like for ex. drawing anatomy.
Jennifer Valente I would definitely look on different campus’ websites to see what best fits you and your needs! Research before you go, if you can visit please do! You’ll see some campus’ false advertise a lot of this stuff. Some are very transparent. And if you visit in person during the school year and during the summer you’ll see a different in the environment and that’ll be a good deciding factor as well.
Jennifer Valente It’s not about if you can afford your education (most people always want to take that into account) because most of us can’t, especially not by ourselves. But it’s about your own personal needs, not WANTS needs. If you make the wrong choice just know you can always transfer somewhere else! Your education isn’t a race to the finish line.. make sure you’re doing what’s best for you. For example I personally didn’t want to take out student loans to go to school so I went to a school that fit my needs.

Jahnavi K hey! i think it depends on how they word it in your scholarship letter. mine said a total and then it said an amount of like 9k per year. so it should say the years worth AND the 4 years worth in the letter! at least this is how it was for me. hope this helps!!

I truly wanted to stay in SCAD but the price on everything, I can't keep up, my parents wouldn't keep up. If i did stay here, it'll just destroy their salary. I received no scholarships to prepare for it either and it made me conclude that I have to drop out. I'm already a talented artist but I wouldn't call myself professional just yet. Especially I hardly did animation which is I want to do. My options are either taking online classes or go to my state's college. For the first time on my life, I have no plan what happens next and at the moment I feel lost.
Current scad student here... i am thinking about switching over to full sail because it has more in regards to their writing program. I dont know if i want to make a switch but need help 😭😭😭. It is getting too much and I need another option

CheyNobi aw dang. i write novels too and was disappointed in scads selection in that department. i say if Full Sail has better options, go for it!! but ultimately it has to be what you want. no one else can make that decision for you
I'd recommend watching 'Scam Art Schools | Artists Beware' video by Catherine Grafffam that talks about predatory & sketchy art schools, with Full Sail being one of them. I personally have looked into Full Sail, but the tuition, acceptance rate, and graduation rate all seem like red flags to me. If I had to do writing, I would probably go to an in-state public school's English major or their Communications major.

I think ultimately you wanted to give up on the school. The meal plan was just a good excuse to do so and I can understand that sometimes our traumas prevent us from moving forward. You didn’t want to invest the money on something you weren’t sure about. You couldn’t find meaning in what you were doing. It’s strange because while I do understand that a bad system can stop people from overcoming challenges, I hope you know that sometimes being an artist means breaking the rules for what you want. Not running away because the system is broken. It’s ok to be scared of loans and being in debt; I totally understand but the strength to take on those risks are important too especially for women.
