  • Here is a super rare pilot presentation for the return of The Joker's Wild. This was set to be sold into syndication for fall 2007. It was to be paired with Combination Lock. This is just a pilot presentation done for the Sony & King World execs. Your host is the amazing game show producer, Mark Maxwell-Smith. Enjoy & Happy Birthday to ME!!!

Happy Birthday, Wink! This was an impressive pilot - even Charlie O'Donnell announcing! The only negative, to me, is that the dollar values in the main round are a bit high (budget) - if it was nighttime in 2023 maybe. Mark-Maxwell Smith was pretty good. This is a better version than the 1990 one. Thank you for sharing these with us.

Indeed! Never thought this would ever surface; such a shame it was never picked up. I think that was really due to timing, though; might've been picked up had it been pitched around maybe a year or two later.

Happy birthday Wink. This was a cool update and returned the game to the classic Joker when Jack Barry hosted. The Joker looked much cooler than the sad-faced one they had on the 1990 to 91 version. I also liked that they had the original devil back in the bonus round. The double or nothing in the bonus complimented it well. Mark Maxwell-Smith wrote the jokes that Jack and Wink used to tell on Joker and Tic-Tac-Dough.

This is a wonderful pilot for the show. it updates the classic version and still keeps most of the sensibility of the old show. Combination Lock is amazing too. The problem and challenge, even back in 2007, was that syndication was not very lucrative unless a show was able to land a prime spot in the schedule; and prime access in the better markets were taken by Wheel, Jeopardy, and entertainment news shows. I would love to see these shows come to air, but I feel that the only shot they have are prime time network weekly episodes. And try doing that unless you have major cash prizes available.

King World and Sony sold these shows TWICE. Once to the NBC O & O's and once to FOX. But they money wasn't big enough for them, so Sony & KW turned down the deals. It's a misconception that "these didn't sell". They did. TWICE. You got Merv's Crosswords and Temptation because, they were cheap.

Happy 90th birthday, Wink! (I kept on thinking you were 89 and your 90th was next year!) I've watched you on Tic Tac Dough and Las Vegas Gambit since the 1970s/1980s (school vacations, being sick) and enjoy watching the pilots and other game shows on your channel.
This version of Joker's Wild would have been terrific if someone had bought the pilot. It hews almost perfectly to the Jack Barry edition of TJW but with a nice upgrade in money.

Hey WINK!! Happy Birthday, as an aspiring game show creator & host, I want you to know how inspiring you have been for me as I find my way!!
I was also wondering if there’s any chance you know of any Card Sharks pilots that were done with JIM PERRY for the1986 CBS revival. I know that they had originally wanted Jim Perry to host but he was too busy in Canada. If he shot a pilot, I would love to see it!

I'd love to see them give it another go. I wonder if it would be able to find enough stations and get in enough good times slots, though, considering so many stations (particularly CBS, ABC and NBC affiliates) are filling more and more of their open Slots with News.

Wow, this was pretty good! The only two things off with this - landing Jokers should have allowed the player to pick a category other than the listed ones for the single window amount ($500 if one joker, $1,000 if 2 jokers, or the $1,000/$2,000 for the bonus category), and three Jokers should have allowed the player to pick the category, no? Odd that they would tighten the Joker rules.

  • @JZCRAZY
    @JZCRAZY 7 месяцев назад +8

Mark Maxwell-Smith did a great job. Very personable and comfortable behind that podium. At first glance, my only issues with this show are with the slot machine rolling the categories so damn slow. I loved how fast they sped by on the original. I'm not a fan of the slow roll. It makes the machine look tired. I also would have made the set more glitzy. It looks kind of bland. That stage needed more lights and neon just like a regular casino to add some excitement. Even the original recognized that fact.

So, this was just a pilot presentation. Originally they were to just be in our offices, but Harry Friedman decided to amp things up. He came in one day and said, "I'm going to have them take out the Wheel set and we're going to split Stage 11 in half. We did both of these LIVE, one after the other, no stopping. So considering what they were going to be, these are way above and beyond. The real shows would have been cranked up even more.

Happy birthday, Wink. More life! 🎉🎂❤️
This has to be one of the rarest pilots out there; lots of set elements from Wheel of Fortune, and the slot machine was used for Wheel of Fortune’s casino-themed weeks. Also, nice to hear Charlie O’Donnell’s voice again. Quite a few changes from the original, but this should have sold. Would’ve done a WHOLE lot better than Temptation, that’s for sure.
A few things that I’ve noticed; would the natural triple win rule still have worked in the bonus round? Also, I’m assuming there would not have been a winnings cap just like the original (Jeopardy!, another KingWorld/Sony show doesn’t).

Mark Maxwell-Smith did an outstanding job hosting this pilot, and the fact it wasn't picked up for syndication is absolutely criminal! It also isn't all that surprising, though, considering it would've been almost impossible to get it cleared on enough stations, in enough desirable timeslots; ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates were pretty much out of the question as virtually every slot not filled by long running syndicated programs like judge Judy, Dr. Phil and Oprah were filled by excessive local news. And of course most fox, CW and My Network TV affiliates, As well as Independent Stations were cramming about a dozen episodes of Maury and Jerry Springer into their daily lineups.
Wonder if it could have a shot in syndication nowadays, though?
Never thought I'd see this pilot, and I'm so glad it has surfaced but at the same time, like I said, it's extremely bittersweet as well to know that this never sold.

EDIT: After watching this, I can't believe this wasn't picked up! The bonus game within a bonus game was genius! And the double play and triple play were very innovative ideas, too. I know that had this been picked up, I woulda been a regular viewer for sure.

Great to see this pilot. I'd heard the slot machine backdrop for Vegas-themed weeks on "Wheel" was originally the slot machine on this pilot. Finally nice to see this pilot.

Oh my God Wink Martindale! Those Beat The Devil bonus games was very suspenseful! If I was in Mark Maxwell Smith's shoes, If he got to $10,000; his winnings would've jumped to $50,000! The second thing is that if he did a natural triple during the match or trying to defeat the devil, I would've given him some prizes as well as the $50,000! And then I would've told Freddy that if he gets to $20,000, then his winnings would've jumped past $100,000! And If he stopped, he would continue as our champion! And 5 wins would've automatically win the brand new car!

A very interesting watch. The host seems like he was having fun with it but the contestants were mostly dumb as a doorknob. Just a couple quirks with spinning three jokers shouldn’t give the opponent a chance to win and I didn’t see what the real incentive was to go to $20,000 in the bonus round. Would they get more money or the car automatically?

It was fine, but the gameplay was different there. A contestant had to answer a series of short questions in a category he picked after spinning the reels until he or she missed then his or her opponent would have a chance to answer and then either player would spin the reels to bring up the next categories. I prefer the earlier format where, after a contestant spun the reels, he'd pick a category and answer one question and then his opponent would spin the reels and pick a category and so on. It was a lot faster that way.

Oh, this should've made the attempt. The only difference is adding a zero to everything and the second part of the bonus round. Surprised no one bit -- I would think the pitch would've included that this, unlike the Finn version, is faithful to the Barry/Cullen version quite completely.

I'm glad to see they went back to the original format -- two players, no definitions. The change to the bonus round worked for me, too. I wish this pilot could've sold, but I gather too many station GM's still had a bad taste in their mouths from the Pat Finn version. Nothing against Pat, but the 1990 format didn't work.

Do you get no choice in this version of the game to take a subject for less or go off the board with jokers? Freddie was compelled to take "People in People" for $2k. Could he not go off the board?
All Judy could do was get 3 joker to win the game, Mark claimed. Wouldn't Judy spinning "2 for the Money" as a triple qualify her for a $4K question to tie it?

    • @VegasInsight
      @VegasInsight 7 месяцев назад +1

I don't mind spinning one wheel to determine the category for the 3 jokers. Are the harder categories like "2 for the Money" included in that spin?
I don't care for the opponent's opportunity to answer a separate question in the same category if the spinner misses their triple joker spin.

This was actually a lot like the original. More Modernized version. Pat Finn's was all right, but this was better.

Hey, the devil is a throwback from the original!

I’m guessing they couldn’t go “off the board” with the jokers to choose a category that wasn’t already on one of the other reels like they could in the Barry/Cullen version, or even not play the joker to make the question worth less in case they should miss it and the opponent get a chance to answer.

Not a bad pilot. I do wish they could go “off the board” with a joker, but after reading the reason why it was omitted, I understand (as long as it was brought back if sold). Don’t like how the other player can win on a three joker spin, that should be a perk only to the spinner. Love how the classic spinning and buzzer sounds were kept. Champion going first is OK, prefer challenger though.
Bonus round is a nice update. Much better than $1000 and prizes. There could be a budget concern though.
Mark Maxwell-Smith did a good job especially since he’s a producer and not a host. I’m assuming he was only doing this for the pilot, another person would be the host in the series.

One small question...why is there a handle on Mark's podium? Was that a tiebreaker thing or something?

Great pilot! My only issue is someone could steal a three Jokers question. Other than that, great!

This should've sold, albeit the Snoop version wasn't bad either.

The only way Shawn could have won on her last spin was to spin 3 jokers OR any combination of jokers and Triple Play, the latter of which would have been $2000 doubled to $4000, which would have given her $7000 total for the win.

I know this was one of two pilots, yes? Wonder if the other's around there somewhere. I also wonder if the other pilot brought back "going off the board"?
Which was one of my quibbles...losing that rule, and the changes to getting three jokers (the contestant should be rewarded with picking a category, and it should be his/her reward only. As Jack would say, if you miss, the game goes on like before)
Agree that the bonus round should have some kind of stakes for hitting $20K. A top cash prize, if not a prize (package)?
I'd also complain that the challenger now gets the last chance to catch up, but the CBS version started that way.
Not sure how Mark made me feel...I'm used to Jack's dry personality and flair for the dramatic.
Overall I'd prefer this to Snoop Dogg.

I of course have the other pilot. We did not include the "off the board" option for a few reasons. One was for simplicity. You have to all remember, when you're trying to sell a show, you don't want to over complicate it. We felt that teaching the buyers Joker's Wild all over again was enough and adding an option where they could answer a question that wasn't even on the reels, was too much. Not to say we would not have included it in the real show. But for this, it was too much. That being said, I feel the second pilot went way overboard and we added too much. Some of it was my fault. But we tried.
