People who think timeouts are damaging must have the calmest children. My son hits and punches and gets so crazy. I gently tell him things and it escalates so we do a timeout. He is like a new person after, and does what I asked him to do. I hate it. Getting him into timeout can be an Olympic sport, but it really is the only thing to cool a situation off. It even helps me collect myself so I can parent better.
I would never send a child to time out for "whining" your child should be allowed to express their emotions and should not be punished for being in a bad mood, especially as a toddler
I’d say making the kid say sorry is a good means of teaching them respect, but you should try not to make apologizing seem negative. As soon as the child apologizes, you give them a hug and comfort them a little to show that you approve of this behavior. Then you carry on with normal activity like nothing happened.
Thanks for discussing time outs. You're right that they are not harmful. I'm not sure if you've seen the following articles, but they provide solid empirical evidence to support the safety and efficacy of time outs for anyone else who was unsure: www.incredibleyears.com/article/weighing-in-on-the-time-out-controversy-an-empirical-perspective/
Take them out volunteering. If they see the good that caring about others does their hearts might change. Also tell them “if someone did that to you would you like that” this will have them thinking. Now just because they are thinking doesn’t mean they’ll change but as a parent your job is to plant seeds and as they grow older and wiser you will watch those seeds grow. If you are Christian, which I pray you are. Pray about it. Pray for your kids, their future and pray they accept Christ. (If you are not Christian, I would advise you to pray anyway) I will pray for you and your kids.
Laura Markham talks about feelings and first I tell them "You're safe" and we talk and I meet their emotional needs and then I end it with "You can always talk to me about your feelings."
Dana, my grandson is almost 2. What is the appropriate age to start timeout? I'm not sure if he would understand yet about staying in a spot for timeout but need a way to discipline him. I am his caretaker 3 days a week.
Hello Dana, I have a question when I give my son time out should Ii explained at some point why is the time out for? like maybe before before setting the time? now what I am doing is time out and after the time out no tv no phone, is this too much? my son reacts bad. getting worst now before it was just a cry, then yelling and now kicking :(

I completely agree in regards to about the one warning. Also I love the modeling approach. Thank you.

This works wonders with my grandson. Thank you!
Thank you for this. Your common sense advice is so helpful when I'm physically and emotionally drained and don't know what to do.

Two is the perfect age for time out. I suggest watching Supernanny’s time out videos.
