I live near a small regional airport. I used to hear those awesome turboprops as these things flew low over my house. This brings back memories. :)

I'm living that right now. Live less than a mile away from a small airport in Scotland. Hear saab 340s jetstream 41s and cessnas going low over my house. Love the sound when they are taking off!

I miss the Swedish commuter; it was everywhere in SoCal with American Eagle livery.

As much as I've always admired the SAAB 340 series, I'm still surprised by the fact that none of the subsequent models offered never came equipped with their own APU's. That must've been quite a hassle for ground personnel worldwide, especially for American Eagle back in the day - who then had the largest SAAB 340 fleet!

I think some (if not all) have a prop brake on the no. 2 engine, a bit like the ATR 42/72s, so the engine can be started without the prop spinning, so acting like an APU. From what I can tell though either some don't have it, or they don't use it unless extremely necessary, as some companies see it as not worth the extra wear on the engine. Pretty cool planes though.

I'm very glad to see the C/N 340B-171. It was based in my hometown when I was 17 years old. Its immatriculation was HB-AHY and changed to 00-RXM while it was flying for a company that was called Air Exel :-)

And excellent audio as well. Always love the sound of turboprops transitioning from low to high condition.

I'm not a real world pilot, but I fly this aircraft type a lot in a simulator environment. It does seem particularly complex to operate compared to a modern airliner, but I enjoy flying it nevertheless. Many thanks for sharing the video and regards from the UK :-)

So the interesting thing is saab 340 engine's when starting sound similar to the car wash vacuum's and come to find out this engine has a centrifugal spinner just like the vacuum.

With Regional Express Airlines in Australia an airline that operates Saab 340's (mostly 340B) they start both engines first (usually right first and left second) then a person goes underneath the aircraft to remove the power cable, and then when the aircraft is all clear they usually unfeather the props one after another but sometimes both props are unfeathered at once.

I would like to se REX get some more efficient ATR42-600s to replace the Saab 340B's.

Removing chucks with both engine running? Yeah, i see absolutely no danger there 🤷🏻‍♂️
Yet, its a nice bird !

I noticed its 6 months ago you posted this comment,
But the SAAB 340, like many other turbo-prop aircraft, can feather the propellers so they can stand completely still with the engines running,
      Or even reverse,
      Or of course, go forward.
So there is not really any danger there, since the plane is on its parking brake as well,
      Just for info!
