    Incident:- On May 4, 2023, a mob in B. Phainom village, Manipur, allegedly gang-raped two women and killed a man. The complaint about the incident was filed at the Saikul Police Station by Thangboi Vaiphei, the chief of the village, on June 21, 2023, more than a month after it happened. The complaint also alleges that a third woman was gang-raped by the mob. A case has been registered under Section 153A/398/427/436/448/302/354/364/326/376/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25(1C) of the Arms Act.
    AS PER POLICE AND MEDIA REPORTS
    The mob was reportedly made up of members of the Meitei community, who are the majority ethnic group in Manipur. The Kuki community, to which the two women belonged, is a minority ethnic group.
    The incident took place in the aftermath of communal violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. The violence was sparked by a demand by the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status, which would give them certain benefits from the government.
    The two women who were gang-raped were reportedly paraded naked in front of the mob. They were also reportedly beaten and tortured.
    The man who was killed was the husband of one of the women. He was reportedly shot and killed by the mob.
    The complaint about the incident was filed by Thangboi Vaiphei, the chief of B. Phainom village. Vaiphei alleged that the mob was led by members of the Meetei Leepun, a Meitei youth organization.
    A case has been registered under Section 153A/398/427/436/448/302/354/364/326/376/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25(1C) of the Arms Act.
