  • Here's how Dune shaped the last 5 years of X-Men comic books.
Jonathan Hickman's House of X and Powers of X is cemented as an iconic X-Men comics classic, one of the most impactful superhero stories of the millennium, and the foundation for a fascinating Krakoa era for Marvel’s mutants. But upon reflection, it's clear that House and Powers are HEAVILY influenced by Frank Herbert's Dune, in ways that have only become clearer as Denis Villeneuve's Dune films have released to so much critical and financial success throughout the 2020s, and Dune’s ascension has truly taken hold.
This discussion assumes familiarity with the following works:
    X-Men: House of X
    X-Men: Powers of X
Frank Herbert's Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, and to a very limited extent, Heretics of Dune
A bit of Krakoa era X-Men, including the Hickman written Inferno!

Comics readers have been saying this for a long time, but pulling in influences from outside of superhero stories is essential for marvel and dc to remain interesting and relevant in their storytelling. Even if you take the least-charitable reading of this, that all of Hickman's best ideas aren't his originally, I still appreciate that he's integrating these themes and concepts. It makes for a richer setting for storytelling overall.

Two of my favorite works of fiction of all time. Thank you for highlighting the incredible connections here. Hickman's X-Men is a better Dune comic adaptation than any official one.

Certainly not surprising, I haven't read house/powers of x yet (never been all that huge on X-men specifically), but I just recently read Hickmans FF-Avengers/new Avengers-Secret Wars and definitely think the whole saga belongs on any list of the great, grand, sci-fi epics out there (and perhaps one in particular that has been overlooked by many sci-fi fans who might love it); and while it's not as directly dune-like as his X-men stuff sounds, you can still see fingerprints of dune in it (especially the 'destructive future-proofing through religious crusade' of Rabam Alal).

    Mind blown!
I love Krakoa era and have come to really appreciate Dune.
All of it speaks deeply to human evolution and our long term potential.

If I remember correctly one of the fears of Leto was that AI would come back and that is why he did those things.

X3: Year One Thousand timeline kinda reminded me of Dune and its relations with AI, as we could say, that both Herbert and Hickman treat it not like a final goal, something that is destined to rule over humanity, but more like a "placeholder", like, the reign of machines would last for a time, but eventually humans will be able to overcome and surpass AI, mostly by genetic engineering (Mentats and Post-Humans)
Also, I didn't really know previous works of Hickman, but after seeing Dune 2 I wanted to check out something similar (like a combination of sci-fi and political fiction) and my first reaction was to finally read House and Powers of X, not knowing how many similarities there actually are

Its amazing how many sci fi based stories were heavily influenced by Dune from Star Wars to X-Men. The AI threat in Dune actually resurfaces in the later novels after Emperor Leto is killed in the novels the Hunters of Dune in 2006 and Sandworms of Dune in 2007. The thinking machines have returned 15k years after the Butlerian Jihad, and their goal is to wipe out humanity.
