How to Clean Grout with Toilet Bowl Cleaner | Should You???

  • My grout is dirty. Very dirty. And cleaning grout is big job. I tested 2 toilet bowl cleaners on my bathroom grout which is tile. Clorox and Lysol - to see which was best. I show you how to clean grout with toilet bowl cleaner, but should you?
Toilet bowl cleaner is very strong and not good to breathe in. Open windows to air out the room. It can also damage grout, but if you're going to seal it anyway, this method does work. I just hated the fumes and will leave toilet bowl cleaner for the toilet (I have a natural way to clean your toilet too).

Home Depot rents a grout steamer for around $50 for four hours or $75 for the day. Unless you're doing a giant space you can easily get it done in four hours. Doesn't break your back and works really well. I'd recommend that, personally.

I, too, am on a grout cleaning crusade. I have seen on several videos warnings about using caustic cleaners on grout as it can chemically interact with the calcium (?) in the cement used in the grout and cause permanent damage. I'm no expert, but I've been reading/watching everything I can in search of an EASY, EFFECTIVE, and FAST way (while keeping off my 70 year old knees) to clean grout. Thanks for your video.

I did the same experiment. I was so pleased with the results. I used the sponge by Mr. Clean which really worked great. After, rinsing the floor O used my floor cleaning machine to
Make sure I got all the cleaner off my floor. Also, I did it in sections and took a few days so it wasn’t overwhelming. Lysol was by far the best

So my grout was black it was so gross (just moved to a new place and previous tenants left it like that). I used the bleach gel and my grout got crazy white. I think your error was not using a more abrasive scrub brush. I used an actual grout brush and only had to scrub for about 10 sec per section and my results were a lot more dramatic.

I use bolex bathroom cleaner (sams club), it will remove years of grime from the grout in minutes. It is an acid, so you need to open a window or at least used the bathroom fan. I apply to a SMALL area let it set for a couple of minutes AT most. You will see Bolex chemical reaction and turn into a white foam. Then mop up with clean water using my O'Cedar spin mop to dilute the solution then follow up with another clean water rinse. This is not a daily, weekly, or even monthly cleaner. It's strong 💪 and I use it maybe once a year. You will be absolutely amazed with the results. Obviously use at your own risk, blah blah, if you have any problem I'm not responsible. You can thank me later, for grout that looks like the day it was installed.

Hypochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite are both bleach. One is the acid and the other is the salt form and both likely to co-exist in lysol and Clorox. This suggests you can get similar effects with a cheaper bottle of diluted bleach. The sticky gel formula of toilet cleaner may be better for clinging to the grout for a while for the product to get absorbed

I was concerned that the areas where both products touched may produce toxic fumes. You aren't supposed to mix bleach with anything else. The non-bleach product may contain something that was reacting with the bleach. Most of us know that bleach combined with ammonia will produce toxic, deadly fumes. Also, when used in a toilet the bowl cleaners are getting diluted, and you aren't generally exposed to it for an extended period of time.

    • @CleanFreakGermaphobe

I recommend that anyone who watches this video SKIP the first four minutes because that's all just fluff. She doesn't even get started until well after that. Save yourself some time!

FYI … the toilet bowl cleaner actually removes a layer of grout so you shouldn’t do this very often

It’s true, it can damage the grout over time. That and the fumes means I won’t use this method again.

OOOOhh...no no nooooo. Sodium hypochlorite is BLEACH. Not Lye. Lye is potassium hydroxide! Hydrochloric acid is hydrochloric acid. Not a part of bleach. I don't know much re the products themselves personally, but you are giving the wrong information.

Plus acids should never be mixed with bleach. So getting them mixed up is dangerous.

Hello my name is Adam I am a certified cleaning expert using toilet bowl cleaner as a grout cleaner is a bad idea because it can ruin the grout and if the grout is a certain color It can ruin it you need to call us the tile cleaning experts who have the appropriate tile cleaning chemicals that will not ruin the color or the tile itself And I could void the warranty of the tile

Toilet bowl cleaner will eat away at your grout and cause erosion to the point it’s no longer there. Please stop using bowl cleaner to clean grout!

For sure. I've learned a lot because I'm doing cleaning tests and using a lot more variety of product. But it's made me want to go greener.
This is why I use a steam cleaner so much. Only water.

I do have to add how after a few weeks I still get satisfaction from seeing my grout clean. I just think this method is too hard and bad for breathing.

It was so much. However, the floor still looks so good. It's almost worth it. But people recommend things on the internet and other people try it, not aware of what they're getting into. Lots of work. Strong chemicals.

I'm a literalist. What do you mean exactly. How would you clean it? I was testing a very popular method of cleaning grout. Once. To see how it goes. And I'll never do it again.
