This is arguably the moment that Squidward understood why SpongeBob always did the stupidest things just to succeed over-the-top at almost everything he set out to do.
Squidward knows how much failure hurts, and so when he saw SpongeBob pretend not to be hurt, flop on the ground, and then break down crying, he also realized that maybe they both aren't so different after all.
