If i could hand pick any Rock singer in history to front my band it would be Lou Gramm. Lou can sing with power, soul and aggression in a high register. This guy was the whole package when it comes to vocal ability. Tip of the hat Fil for highlighting the great Lou Gramm and Foreigner.

Yes he had such an incredible voice. So sad that mick did not give him the proper share of his contribution for ‘I want to know what live is’ . The whole interpretation came from Lou Gramm and Mick took his unique interpretation and snitched his financial share and artist contribution for the creativity process. This killed Lou Gramm’s enthousiasme.

As a singer heavily influenced by Lou, this song is no cakewalk. In fact, I would say Lou's vocals are some of the most challenging for most vocalists. There is a pumping operatic intensity to his vocals that can be so demanding. I have learned so much studying his technique.

There is only 1 True Voice of Foreigner and that is Lou Gramm...... His gift is unmatched. A humble, gentle, kind soul, who is in no way arrogant as many are. He has been a dear friend to my husband and I. He has a very lovely supportive wife Robyn. Loves his children. So proud of him for overcoming his Addiction "demons", Years ago. Even with all that has happened with his health, has not changed the man he is.... and he still puts on a great show. Only one Lou! Glad you did this review of this one of a kind Singer

I LOVE Lou Gramm's voice. I read his autobiography and the brain tumor that he had was a terrible one. Removing it took hours and it damaged his pituitary gland causing him to gain a lot of weight. It also affected his voice. He is better now. I absolutely love Urgent and I think the sax solo on that song is one of the best sax solos in rock. The current line up of Foreigner with Kelly Hansen is all right, and Hansen is a good singer but he's no Lou Gramm - no one is.

While their 80's power ballads were unforgettable, my personal preference were the hard rocking anthems like Jukebox Hero, Dirty White Boy, Head Games and Feels Like the First Time. BLISS! - you have given Lou's superlative voice and performance the attention I've been looking for. Not just drivelling on about how awesome he is - true, but not useful - as other analyses do, but actually explaining some of what produces the magic. And your happy face as you listen to this is a joy in itself!
Still a bit lost in the mystery though: the basic ability is probably genetic since his mother was a singer, but how did he develop that incredible range, breath control, perfect transitions through voices, and dynamic brilliance even before he had the few voice lessons that he did have*? And he is a small man, so not a huge lung capacity to play with, compared with many.
*even in early 70s with Black Sheep you can hear the awesomeness, though he has not extended his upper register the way he did with Foreigner
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look at Lou's work on more rocky numbers and, especially, doing the music his heart is really with, on his 'Ready or Not', 'Long Hard Look' and 'Shadowking' albums.

Wow, Fil. Either you're in my head, I'm in yours, the stars have aligned, or something! Just a few weeks ago, Foreigner was playing the Bloomsburg Fair while my wife and I were there walking around. We could hear the band striking up this song and I commented to her that the vocals (Kelly Hansen) just weren't cutting it (she disagreed, of course). But it brought back memories, which gave me the idea to try to work the song out on guitar, just for fun. So...just the other day, I had this very video playing. My wife asked, "Who's that singing?" "It's Lou Gramm", I said, "And that's how this song needs to be done." Then tonight, I was just fooling around with it on my guitar when I decided to take a break and see what you had put up, and here was this video. Simply amazing, man. Rock!

Love, love, love Foreigner. Lou had such a good sound to his voice, his tone feels good in my ears (since I don't know technical terms this is how I explain it). Fil, love your analysis as always. So full of great info and admiration for the artist.

Hot Blooded, Juke Box Hero, As Cold as Ice.... Great songs not covered in the analysis (if anyone wants to see more of their great work). Lou had a solo tune on The Lost Boys movie soundtrack called Lost in the Shadows. This is a GREAT song.

Had a chance to see Lou just about five years ago. After all he’s been through, you would still know that voice anywhere! He sounded great and never shied away from the more challenging notes.
Super nice guy too who happily autographed his autobiography for fans after the show. He seemed genuinely humbled by the adoration.
    Loved his solo Midnight Blue

Per usual, Fil, a wonderful analysis/history of Foreigner and the superb Lou Gramm. Lou’s singing is just filled with subtle surprises, many of which you mention, and one you don’t. He has this habit of closing an important word or note with a large drop in pitch (like an octave!) that is very appealing. It happens in an eye blink, you’d never notice it unless you’re looking for it, but once noticed it is unavoidable. It is antithetical to traditional singing where a pitch is held and faded quickly but he makes it his own and it conveys - to me at least - a lyrical emphasis that’s deeply humanizing. It’s a great contrast to the almost angelic note that precedes it, really special, and all his.
I recorded and mixed a Foreigner New Year’s Eve broadcast from Universal Studios on the last day of 2007. Kelly Hansen did a great job, but he’s a more clinical and less adventurous singer than Lou, lacking the emotional bomb Lou was always able to set off. Jason Bonham was very much in vogue at the time but I thought he was a poor choice for the music of Foreigner, consistently overplaying and badly missing the essence of their music. The only person I spent much time with was Mick Jones, who impressed in every conceivable way, playing phenomenal guitar and still having the focus to sit and clearly articulate his vision for my mix of the band. I’m sorry we didn’t stay in touch for the remix, he was a breath of fresh air and a delight to work with.

Lou Gramm, simply one of the best singers in the whole rock genre. Great tone and great phrasing learnt from the likes of Steve Marriott and especially Paul Rodgers, so he learnt from the best and adapted it to fit his own style. Like those singers so versatile too, from strutting riff fueled hard rock to these tender ballads he was equally at home. All this and a great songwriter and not just on the seminal Foreigner songs, also with Black Sheep and his solo material with Mick Jones. Deservedly inducted into the songwriters Hall of fame with Mick. A true mega talent and having had the pleasure of meeting Lou, a truly humble man.

Man, you know music. We, the average consumer, just listen and enjoy these great songs. But It's Interesting to hear your analysis of the complexity of what is actually going on within these songs. Great musicians and vocalists who sound virtually the same as their records when performing live are a rarity these days.

The 70 and 80 were a time when people sounded like their recordings live. Because we knew that if you didn't you'd be a laughing stock. Music was taught in schools and people had spent years developing their voices and instruments. The group YES is able to still put out. They are in their 70s!
