I remember watching this show with my father back in the 70’s. The Grave Yard Shortcut story from the first episode had my father hooked. I never heard him laugh harder than that. We watched this show, The Two Ronnies, and of course Monty Python all on PBS out of Boston. Such great memories. thanks for putting these up. Comedic Gold!
Thank you , this is brilliant comedy and has cheered me up as well.as many other people to.have a good laugh so it makes life a bit happier, excellent+ thank u.again
I used to watch this back in the 70's when I was a kid. I used to watch Dave Allen drink whiskey, Smoke cigarettes, as did my Dad, and tell jokes. All I wanted to do was drink whiskey & smoke - Because I didn't get the jokes. Now as an Adult when I watch Dave Allen, All I want to do is Drink whiskey, and smoke Cigarettes Because I GET the jokes... & .Because I'm drunk as Hell, and Dave is Funny as HELL & I left my god behind the couch.
I remember watching the vampire scene as a small child back in the 70s on t.v. Scared me. Now as man in his early 50s I've just watched it again for the first time on the internet. Not as scared as I was back then. Well maybe still a little scared.
Loved watching Dave Allen. Especially when he'd tell you those ghost stories and frighten himself! This was when TV was TV. We only had two or three channels but better entertainment. Now we've got more channels and Freeview. They are still charging TV liecience. What does freeview mean? FREE VIEWING. No liecience required.
Concerning Dave's story about HMS Friday, Wikipedia says "In fact, there has never been any Royal Navy ship of that name. It is unclear where the story originated; however, it seems to have gained in popularity after its recounting by comedian Dave Allen on his BBC television show Dave Allen at Large, Series 1, Episode 2, first broadcast 4 February 1971." Way to change the world, Dave.
My dad told me the proudest moment of his school education was a report he got (which he still has even tho he’s in his 60s) which said “He is intelligent, resourceful and innovative however he does routinely take the attitude of ‘if you can’t solve the problem today, go away and try again tomorrow’ “ The proudest moment of _my_ school education was a report which said “If he has learned anything after over 10 years in the education system, he sure has kept it to his f***ing self!”
Some classics here for sure. The joke about the bank in the west of Ireland cracked me up. I'm still trying to pronounce Richard the Third. Some of the sketches are deliberately silly which I take as a nod to slapstick. But the Butler theme shows off Dave Allen's incredible acting ability.
I have watched a few of these now as I think he was great. Where was his drink ?.. The rest I have seen he always had one on the table and replenished after each sketch.
They were the days when someone Ike dave as a entertainer could pretty much take the mick out of life..cos back in thoses days it was a our life ,freer ,happier, and cheerful..now we are victims of a oppression brought about by trendy political motions . I crave the good old days.
Anybody else ever noticed that the end of his index finger on his left hand is missing? He lost it as a child because he stuck it into the spindles at a mill and his friend turned it on.
They wouldn't be allowed to drink or smoke on stage anymore. They've taken your freewill away. Like pubs. You use to be able to smoke in a pub. They banned that. So if you want a meal. Go to the restaurant, the chippy or Cafe. Not the pub. Only food should be sold in a pub are Chrisps chocolate or steak n kidney pie. And you shouldn't have reserved tables. It's not a restaurant. If you want coffee ☕ or 🍵 make it at home 🏡
Brings back fond memories of working for my uncle. Every once in a while we'd drive past a pub and he'd blurt out, making me jump in the process: 'There...another one selling pub food at restaurant prices!' I used to start laughing but he was deadly serious.
Allen may well have believed that that story about HMS _Friday_ was true, but in fact, it isn't. The Royal Navy has never had a ship by that name, but the story about HMS _Friday_ has been around for many years, and nobody knows how it arose. It is an urban legend. Allen forgot to mention that the Friday on which HMS _Friday_ allegedly sailed was a Friday the 13th.
@3.00, when an English man tells Dave to do his own thing, he won't know what the English man is talking about. Dave's mind is off a different angle. What's the joke here?
love dave so handsome rip
The ku klux klan joke with the Black and White minstrel is hilarious too ! What a brilliant comedian !!
Still love this man when I'm feeling a bit down,I just sit and binge watch him from every episode I've got.

you realize his drink was only apple juice or water.

Anybody else ever noticed that the end of his index finger on his left hand is missing? He lost it as a child because he stuck it into the spindles at a mill and his friend turned it on.
He never confirmed exactly how he lost his finger, not even to his own children.
Captain Crazy Dave's finger is like the Heath Ledger Jokers smile. lots of stories about how he got it.
Anybody else ever noticed?!?!?! 😲
It was only what he was most famous for!!! 😆
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂classic 👍❤️
Genious
When was this aired and I know 1971 but thus print is remastered so when was it aired recently ?
27 Jan 2006. The announcer says mock the week with Gina yashere and al Murray. That’s the night they appeared together.
He left Ireland, but left his finger halfway behind.
There'll always be a little piece of him in Ireland. Some people leave their hearts, but not Dave.

The Rod Serling of comedy

Dave Allen forgot nothing dude. He was a very smart guy and knew the story inside out.
I notice this S01-E02. Was E01 lost media?
These mistaken magic tricks are better than that intended.
ty much
26:37 THEY WOULDN'T DARE OWT LIKE THAT NOW!!!!!!
What he drank was ginger ale.
The sketch at 35:30 isn’t so funny when you think about the shit that happened at the BBC in the 70s...
That might be a case of show don't tell.
imagine the millennials watching this
Kelly Knight 4r be able the
I am watching it and bloody loving it
So many good shows back then that would be banned now for being “istaphobic”!

38:24 hmmmmm :D
Sorry again... but. Just dave Allen
J withness
Imagine a Muslim equivalent
Nick Jung. He would tortured to death.
Awful
Sadly, Dave Allen fell for that old urban legend about the HMS Friday. There was NEVER a Royal Navy ship named HMS Friday. Sounded good though, huh?
